Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of authentic assessment by theEnglish teachers using the 2013 English Curriculum. The description includes the types ofauthentic assessment used, the implementation and the problem faced by the teachers inimplementing the authentic assessment. The samples of the research were five Englishteachers and 34 students of grade X and XI in a senior high school in Padang Panjang.The data were collected through document analysis, questionnaire, and interview. Then,the data were analyzed descriptively. The result of the research shows that (1) the types ofauthentic assessment used by the five English teachers using the 2013 English Curriculumwere oral interview, observation, writing sample, project or exhibition, constructedresponditem, and performance-based assessment; (2) the implementation of authenticassessment is poor in the preparing, implementing in learning, scoring and reporting; (3)the problems faced are lack of time and knowledge about authentic assessment. It is,therefore, suggested that teachers are urged to improve their knowledge about authenticassessment by establishing training of implementing the authentic assessment at theschool.Keyword: Implementation, Authentic Assessment, 2013 Curriculum, English

Abstract

This research analyzed the English textbook "Bright" used for ninth grade students at MTsN 6 Agam. This study aims to assess how well the textbook is in accordance with the appropriateness of content based on the 2013 curriculum from the National Education Standardization Agency (BSNP). The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis to assess the appropriateness of the English textbook "Bright" used for ninth-grade students at MTsN 6 Agam. Especially focused on comprehensively analyzing the content of the textbook based on standards set by the Education National Standardization Board (BSNP). Data were gathered from the entirety of the "Bright" textbook, supplemented by documentation notes with an English teacher. The researcher served as the primary instrument, ensuring methodological rigor and transparency throughout the study. The analysis involved coding and reduction techniques to identify patterns and themes related to content appropriateness. Findings from the research aimed to provide insights for English teachers, students, textbook writers, and future researchers. The study contributed to the understanding of how well the "Bright" textbook aligned with educational standards and offered recommendations for improving English teaching materials. The research findings indicated that the English textbook "Bright" used at MTsN 6 Agam aligned well with the objectives and curriculum set by BSNP. Data analysis from documentation notes with teachers showed that the textbook generally met the criteria for content appropriateness. While there were minor shortcomings in its ability to supplement other subjects, the "Bright" textbook was deemed relevant, accurate, and inspiring for students. Overall, the textbook portrayed national themes that strengthened pride and appreciation for the nation's culture. This conclusion provides valuable insights for curriculum developers, affirming the suitability of the "Bright" textbook for teaching English at MTsN 6 Agam and advocating for continuous improvement in English education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The background of this research was because of several problems that students had that related to grammar and speaking, the problem was students' average in speaking was good while students' average in grammar was low, and some students had difficulty in choosing correct vocabulary in exercise, and the dominance of students with good speaking and poor grammar based on teacher scores. As a result, the researcher wanted to find out the correlation between grammar ability and students' speaking skill at 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota. The design of this research was correlational research, with the population of this research was all of the 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota in academic year 2022/2023, which consist of 4 classes, with 75 students and using total sampling as the sample because of the population are less than 100 students. The instrument of this research was grammar test and speaking test. The grammar test was multiple choice with consist 25 number and speaking test was students divided into several groups and make a short dialog then perform it. This research was carried out in October 2023. To find out that grammar ability and students speaking skill corralate or not, and the researcher used Pearson Correlation. The result of this research by using Pearson Coefficient between the variables was 0,566 which indicated a bit low correlation, the correlation direction was positive and the correlation magnitude between the variables was a bit low correlation, because there some students had a score in speaking was higher than grammar score.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to desccribe how the implementation of Direct Reading-Thingking (DR-TA) strategy implemented by the teacher in teaching reading comprehension and what challenges the teacher faced in adminitering this strategy in class. The informant in this research was one of the English teachers in class XI of  SMAN 2 Sungai Limau. The data collection methods were observation and interview. Data collection was done through observation checklist and interview with the teacher. Observations were made in class XI MIPA 5 and class XI MIPA 6. Data analysis was done by data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion, the data was presented in descriptive qualitative format. The finding show that the teacher had implemented this strategy in teaching reading comprehension, but there was one step that was skipped by the teacher. The challenges that teachers face in the classroom when implementing the DR-TA strategy are firstly the limited time they have in class, while the time needed for the implementation of this strategy is long. Second, students who are not active and enthused in the learning process. The third is the limited background knowledge of students so that it is difficult to provide predictions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan karena ada beberapa siswa yang memiliki masalah dalam berbicara. Masalahnya adalah siswa tidak dapat berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris secara komunikatif. Oleh karena itu, peneliti ingin mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan teknik Role Play terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan orang di kelas delapan Pondok Pesantren Al-Irsyad Bulaan Kamba tahun ajaran 2022/2023. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu yang melibatkan dua variabel yaitu variabel bebas dan variabel terikat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada pengaruh penggunaan teknik Role Play terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan orang di kelas delapan Pondok Pesantren Al-Irsyad Bulaan Kamba tahun pelajaran 2022/2023. Disajikan dengan menggunakan statistik uji sampel berpasangan SPSS. Kriteria uji t sederhana berpasangan adalah Ha diterima bila uji signifikansi < 0,005, sebaliknya Ho ditolak.
