Abstract

This article discusses the uniqueness of Bali Aga settlements, focuses its observation on belief systems, house forms, the organization of the surrounding environment, and how these attributes have either evolved or revolutionized for various reasons. Differences in geographical position and social development have in subsequent contributed to the complexity of these attributes and their representations within one village or another. Taking Timbrah Village of Karangasem Regency of Bali as its locus of study, this research finds that minor adaptations have occurred on the lay-outing of the village at a macro level, while revolutionary changes happens at the domestic level. The latter encounter is inevitable following the elimination of karang paumahan (the site where traditionally formed homes are constructed upon). Such a shift is further enabled by an improved financial state of many households which leads to the thriving home-renovation related activities. This however is larger than a mere case of affordability. It is frequented by other grounds including, first, a need for spatial arrangement to comfortably accommodate the current lifestyle of the inhabitants; and second, a necessity to have flexible and multi-function spaces/rooms that can be interchangeably used for both ritual and living purposes. All of these forces have created a firm basis for the erection of non-traditional style buildings, leaving the least, if not zero, concerns in regard to the perpetuation of the bale adat (tradition-based building). Nevertheless, there are two elements of home unique to Timbrah that remain untouched. First is an unfenced sanggah (family shrine), and second is the lelompong/pemedal (entry) for the taksu desa (a female virgin whose presence is required during each ritul ceremony (bali aga ritual) held by the village).

Abstract

Timbrah is one of many Bali Aga villages located in the Karangasem Regency of Bali. The Village is not only recognized for its distinctive traditions but also for its unique physical attributes. Spatial layout of Timbrah settlement is characterized by the existence of narrow lanes from where homes are accessed. In its objectives to identify spatial pattern of this village and critical spots from where changes potentially begin in the future, this study is conducted using qualitative approaches within a reach of a descriptive research. Data collection was carried out by doing on-site observation, interviews and literature study. Informants were assigned guided by purposive and snowball sampling method. Analysis was started by verifying all data collected throughout data collection stage, which was then continued by a content analysis process. This study finds that the linier pattern of Timbrah's settlement adheres to a north to south axe with Bale Agung placed in the middle. This Bale Agung is a unifying structure, used intensively in communed manners by Timbrah's community members, and central to the functioning of the village as a whole. This study summarizes that the entire spatial structure is a reflection of socio-cultural conception, people way of interacting, as well as a deep understanding of the environment Timbrah Community lives in. Keywords: spatial pattern, traditional settlement, narrow lane, bale agung, Timbrah Village

Abstract

This article raises a query in regard to the suitability of the 'studio' as a learning method in the field of architecture. Its existence is inspired by the central position of the studio in the curriculum for building design. The studio-based course absorbs a relatively more significant portion of resources, time, and energy compared to others which play a supporting or enriching role. This article applies an inductive approach and explorative method in both data collection and analysis. By considering the various components of influence in architectural learning – aspects of pedagogy, cultural diversification, social interests, and advances in science and technology –, the discussion and results of the study are described in three sub-topics. First is an exploration of a studio design-based education and its roles in learning. Second, it is a study of adapted learning methods that are initiated and implemented by various academic institutions in the same field. And third, it is an extraction of relevant learning methods for future education in the field of architecture.

Abstract

Defense System in the Bali Aga Village Area in Karangasem Regency. The defense system is one of the important things in settlements. Oscar Newman has developed the concept of defensible space, which is a defense concept to improve the quality of residential environments. The Bali Aga people still carry out their traditions, both in terms of customs and in living. Many of the characteristics of the Bali Aga settlements are still clearly visible, because the traditional concepts are still adhered to by most of the people. Aspects of the concept of defense in Bali Aga settlements have not been disclosed much. The disclosure of the concept of defense in the Bali Aga settlement is expected to add references to improve the quality of settlements. This research was conducted in three Bali Aga settlements, namely Timbrah Village, Asak Village, and Bungaya Village, in Karangasem Regency. This village was chosen because it has a location that is close together and has many similarities, in terms of customs and geographical conditions. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out by means of literature studies, observations, and in-depth interviews. Descriptive data were analyzed by content analysis. The results of the study show that the concept related to the defense system in living is seen in spatial organizations that emphasize the occurrence of natural surveillance. The concept of defense is also in the form of establishing boundaries in the yard of the house, and limiting access. Communal space is the center of the area, emphasizing the concept of openness to facilitate control over the behavior of the community and outsiders.
