Abstract

ABSTRACT  The use of -ing form is enormously extensive in English and possibly poses some conceptualgrammatical difficulties for English teachers and learners . On the one hand, -ing morpheme is attached to a verbal base resulting in a verbal form and function . such form and function canbe assumed to be the default case . on the other hand, -ing morpheme can be also attached to a verbal base, but bring about adjectival and nominal functions. In relation to such usages of -ing, Nida (1949) suggests that -ing should simply be treated as a single morpheme with various usages. As a matter of fact, despite being used as a noun or adjective , -ing forms still keeptheir verbal force. The case of -ing forms uncovers the point where word-class indeterminacyexists and therefore they are prevailingly regarded as trans-categorial , a sort of ‘hybrid category’ and ‘seem to be core members of more than one category simultaneously’(Alexiadou 2013 : Malouf 1996) . The paper has two objectives: firstly, to elaborate the idiosyncrasies of -ing forms which are certainly valuable for English teaching and learning andsecondly, to examine the distributions of -ing form in a small English Narrative corpus byemploying a quantitative analysis.  Key words : -ING form, nominal gerund, present particip le, verbal gerund  ABSTRAK Penggunaan bentuk -ing sangat luas dalam bahasa Inggris dan mungkin menimbulkan beberapa kesulitan gramatikal konseptual untuk guru bahasa Inggris dan peserta didik.

Abstract

Differentiated learning in fifth-grade elementary schools in the Untung Surapati cluster, East Denpasar District, has not yet been maximized. Teachers face challenges in implementing differentiated learning when teaching sentence structure. This issue needs to be examined to determine solutions that can be used in sentence structure teaching. The methods used for data collection include observation, interviews, and document analysis. The challenges faced by teachers include: 1) limited teaching staff. To address this, students are divided into several groups. 2) Difficulty understanding the concept of sentence structure. To overcome this difficulty, teachers can use the picture-and-picture method with the assistance of keywords. 3) Limited teaching time. This can be addressed by collaborating with fellow teachers in developing teaching materials. 4) With a large number of students, implementing cooperative learning can be a solution to handling large classes. 5) Teachers' skills in implementing differentiated learning are not yet optimal. Teachers are given opportunities to attend training sessions. 6) Each student has different needs, interests, and skill levels. To address this, teachers create flexible assessment rubrics. 7) Teachers use various teaching approaches to meet the diverse needs of students. Adjusting assessments to different teaching approaches becomes a challenge for teachers. Teachers should create assessment instruments based on the methods applied in teaching.

Abstract

Developing pragmatic competence is essential for EFL learners, especially in contexts where real communication opportunities are limited. This study investigates how Project-Based Learning (PBL) supports the development of pragmatic competence among Indonesian EFL students during real-life speaking interactions with foreign tourists at Double Six Beach, Bali. The project activity focused on the theme “Getting to Know Each Other.” Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed speech acts produced by two learner groups: kids (9–12 years old) and teenagers (14–16 years old). Data were collected from video recordings of student–tourist interactions and examined using Searle’s (1976) speech act taxonomy and Hymes’ (1972) notion of pragmatic competence. Findings show that both groups were able to perform a range of speech acts, including greetings, asking for information, sharing personal details, expressing gratitude, and managing conversational turns. Overall, the study shows that Project-Based Learning provides a useful way to develop pragmatic competence by involving students in meaningful and authentic communication outside the classroom.
