Abstract

Background: Temporo Mandibular Joint (TMJ) ankylosis refers to bone or fibrous adhesion of the anatomic joint component and the ensuing loss of their function. The TMJ forms the very cornerstone of craniofacial integrity and hence its ankylosis in growing children adversely affects the growth and development of the jaws and occlusion. Difficulty in mouth opening and mastication, poor oral hygiene and rampant caries pose a severe physical and psychological burden in the tender minds of children. Patient and Method: Bony ankylosis on the right TMJ in a female patient was not diagnosed until the patient reached her early teens, at which the condition was treated by bony fusion release on the right condyle. We managed the patient for further orthognathic surgery (Le Fort I Ostoeotomy and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy) to correct the skeletal deformity. Result: In collaboration with the Orthodontist for pre-surgery and post-surgery orthodontic treatment, and Physiotherapist for mouth opening and masticatory muscles exercises, a good functional and aesthetic result was achieved. Summary: Multidisciplinary approach in treating severe TMJ ankylosis is mandatory to achieve the optimum results. Awareness among all plastic surgeon and dentist involved in the treatment of craniofacial pathologies in children must be build to allow early diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract

Background: Adult patient with dentofacial deformities usually need surgical orthodontic treatment. Although case of class II dentofacial deformities are more common, the need for treatment and improvement in term of facial profile is generally greater in class III patients. When a skeletal Class III malocclusion is diagnosed, orthognathic surgery is always considered if the orthodontist and patient desire complete correction of the skeletal discrepancy. Purpose: The purpose of this article were to reported a case of severe class III malocclusion and to showed the positive effect of orthognatic surgical treatment on the patient’s profile. Case: This case report describes the surgical-orthodontic treatment of a 20 year old male patient with class III dentofacial deformity. Case managements: To allow adequate surgical movement, both maxillary first premolars were extracted, and the maxillary incisors were retracted. No extractions were performed in the mandibular arch. Surgery included a Le Fort I osteotomy with 8 mm advancement, a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy with the mandibula was set back 13 mm at right side and 11 mm at left side for the correction of dental midline and chin deviation. The genioplasty treatment also was done. Conclusion: Surgical-orthodontic treatment could be chosen as a treatment option for achieving an acceptable occlusion and a good esthetic result in a patient with a Class III dentofacial deformity. Nevertheless, it should be performed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure a satisfactory outcome.Latar belakang: Pasien dewasa dengan deformitas dentofacial biasanya ditangani dengan perawatan bedah orthodonti. Abstract

Kata kunci: Pergerakan gigi, Platalet-Rich Plasma, Perawatan Ortodonti.ABSTRACTBackground: Orthodontic tooth movement is the result of a biological response to physiological changes in the balance of the dentofacial area resulting from the influence of externally generated forces from the use of orthodontic appliances. In some cases, orthodontic movement take a lot of time. Injection of platelet-rich plasma was reported to have the effect of accelerating tooth movement duringthe orthodontic treatment phase. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the effect of using platelet-rich plasma in accelerating tooth movement in orthodontic treatment. Methods: analyzing journals from Google Scholar, Research Gate, NCBI, PubMed, textbook, national and international journal databases. The results of the research that have been analyzed are the use of injection of platelet-rich plasma in patients who undergo orthodontic treatment. The type of injection used is PRP injection. Conclusion: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) on orthodontic tooth movement has apositive effect on accelerating orthodontic movement. Giving the PRP injection to the area of the toothcan result in remodeling of the bone and tissue, but there is a significant reduction in tooth movement because PRP injection is no longer been given, this causes the need to be carried out continuously so that the effect is maximized. Keywords: Tooth Movement, Platelet-Rich Plasma, Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract

To correct malocclusion and malposition in dentistry using orthodontic treatment. Teeth that have moved through the bone with orthodontic devices tend to return to their original position or what is usually called relapse. Relapse is when the teeth return to their original position before orthodontic treatment was carried out. Relapse prevention can be achieved using mechanical devices but there are still some limitations. The use of scaffolds can be a solution in preventing tooth relapse because scaffolds can support cells to grow and develop into new bone in the damaged area. The scaffold components are hydroxyapatite, gelatin, and rosella flower extract which contains flavonoids to inhibit bone resorption. To find out whether these components are toxic or not before they are applied to the human body, a cytotoxicity test is carried out, which is a laboratory study. This research was carried out by incubating the hydroxyapatite scaffold, gelatin and rosella flower extract with osteoblast cells for 24 hours to see whether the rosella extract was toxic to osteoblast cells. Conclusion: This toxicity test shows that rosella flower extract as an ingredient in making scaffolds is not toxic to osteoblast cells.

Abstract

Rosella flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) can be used in the health sector. Rosella petal extract contains flavonoids such as gossypetin, hibiscetin, sabdaretine, alkaloids, and saponins. Rosella has properties such as an antiseptic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and can increase endurance. This paper discusses the anti-inflammatory effect of the rosella plant. The purpose of this article is to describe the effectiveness of rosella plant as an anti-inflammatory. This article collects research results from journals, textbooks, and websites accessed through the National Library of Medicine and Google scholar databases as a method. The reference source inclusion criteria are published in 2012-2022 with topics that are in line with the effectiveness of rosella as an anti-inflammatory. The reference source exclusion criteria were literature published before 2012. A total of 25 references were found, 15 references were selected, and 10 references were excluded. The studies have shown that the content of rosella flower extract is able to inhibit the cyclooxygenase enzyme thereby inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory mediators, namely leukotrienes and prostaglandins and reducing the number of neutrophils so that it can accelerate the wound healing process, however administration of high doses of rosella extract is less effective as an anti-inflammatory because the levels of flavonoids decreased activity at high extract concentrations.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment results are prone to relapse over time, which is the unfavorable change in position of teeth to its original position before orthodontic treatment. With that said, retention is an important part of almost every case of orthodontic treatment. There are many contributing factors to the incidence of a relapse. This article aims to explain the incidence and prevention of relapse after orthodontic treatment through reviewing literature published during 2012 to 2022 which discusses topics that are appropriate and related to relapse and retention. Sources were taken from textbooks, journals and websites that can be accessed through Google Scholar and PubMed databases. A total of 30 references were found, and 9 articles were included in the integrative review after further analysis. This article concludes that relapse is a common occurrence after orthodontic treatment because of gingival and periodontal factors, occlusal factors, soft tissue factors, hard tissue factors, and growth factors, and its prevention requires the use of retainers, either removable or fixed, depending on the case.
