Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTPhytogenic feed additives are plant-derived product such as herbs, spices, and essential oils used in animal feed to improve their performances and health. Garlic (Allium sativum) is well-known as a spice and herbal medicine. Garlic possesses antimicrobial activity and increase nutrient digestibility in animal. The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of supplementing garlic, exogenous enzyme and combination of both on Black-capped Lory (Lorius lory) in digestibility and bacterial count on excreta. Five Black-capped Lory were used in the study and fed with control diet (K1), control diet supplemented with garlic powder (K2), control diet supplemented with Allzyme SSF (K3), and control diet supplemented with both garlic powder and Allzyme SSF (K4). Variables observed include feed consumption, Apparent Metabolizable Energy (AME) value and bacterial count in excreta. Adding enzyme to the diet increased AME compared to control. AME value of K1 was 3,579 kcal/kg, meanwhile AME value of diet K3 and K4 were 3,690 kcal/kg and 3,619 kcal/kg respectively. Adding garlic to the diet did not give significant improvement to AME value. The highest inhibition of bacterial population was in K2 mash. Combination of allzyme and garlic addition showed decreased in bacterial number. Keywords: Allzyme SSF, AME value, bacterial population, black-capped Lory, garlic

Abstract

This study aim to examine the aphrodisiac activity of ethanol extract from the tail meat of porcupine (Hystrix javanica F. Cuvier, 1823) that is traditionally believed by people in Java (Indonesia) could enhance male vitality and sexual perfor-mance. Twenty sexually inexperienced male mice were randomly divided into four groups and paired with artificially estrus female mice after one hour of drug an extract administration. Two doses of ethanol extract; 150 and 750 mg/kg were administered (p.o) to male mice. Sildenafil citrate was used as the positive control while 5% Tween 80 solution used as the negative control. Sexual behavior parameters such as mounting and intromission were observed for three hours of mating. Male mice treated with ethanol extract of porcupine tail meat at the dose 750 mg/kg BW showed higher mounting and intromission frequency compared to the group of ethanol extract dose 150 mg/kg. After 2 hours of admin-istration showed the highest frequency compared to all groups. However, the ethanol extract could not reduce the mount-ing and intromission latency as low as sildenafil citrated treated group. Present findings provide preliminary evidence of aphrodisiac properties from the ethanol extract of porcupine tail meat.

Abstract

Introduction: The ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has profoundly emphasized the pressing need for accurate and reliable diagnostic procedures. Given the potential health risks associated with nasopharyngeal swabs, there has been growing interest in seeking alternative diagnostic mediums. In this context, our study delved into evaluating saliva as a potential diagnostic tool, simultaneously assessing its efficiency in relation to patient demographics and their exhibited clinical symptoms. Methods: Spanning from May to December 2020, we conducted a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis. We meticulously examined medical records to gather insights on patient characteristics, existing health conditions, onset of symptoms, clinical manifestations, and compared the results obtained from both salivary and nasopharyngeal RT-PCR tests for SARS-CoV-2. Results: Among the individuals suspected of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the mean age stood at 52.4 years, with males representing 60.3% of this group. Interestingly, a significant 76.9% reported underlying health conditions, predominantly hypertension and diabetes. The most commonly reported symptoms encompassed respiratory challenges, notably coughing and shortness of breath, succeeded by symptoms like nausea, fever, and a general sense of fatigue. The performance of saliva tests, in terms of accuracy, appeared to be significantly influenced by the timing of symptom emergence. Conclusion: The RT-PCR tests utilizing saliva samples demonstrated considerable promise, especially during the early stages of symptom manifestation, providing a reliable alternative to traditional nasopharyngeal swabs. The findings suggest a superior diagnostic sensitivity when utilizing saliva during the initial phases of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
