Abstract

The philosophy of life of the Batak tribe, namely Dalihan Na Tolu, is believed to be able to maintain order in the social life of the Batak community and family. Dalihan Na Tolu determines the form of greeting, position and attitude that applies in traditional ceremonies and daily life. Amid the rapid current flow of globalization, there are fears that the local wisdom of traditional culture, including the philosophy of life that has been believed for a long time, will erode, especially among families living in metropolitan cities whose infiltration or infiltration. The mixing of cultures is very dynamic and robust. This research was conducted to reveal how the Batak community in the metropolitan city perceives the values of Dalihan Na Tolu. The study shows that among the Batak settlers in Jakarta, the value of Dalihan Na Tolu is still highly understood, accepted, and appreciated, even though the breadth of knowledge and depth of meaning is different. Some factors that influence these differences include sub-ethnic origin, profession, the intensity of the Batak community association, and position in the family. The study's results also concluded that the childhood environment had a significant effect on the internalization of cultural values.

Abstract

The latest technology considered relevant to the times' needs makes people from the newest civilisation abandon and forget traditional technology that has even been tested for hundreds of years in overcoming various problems of its time. One is Poda Na Lima, philosophical teaching about mental attitude and lifestyle in Batak civilisation. Now, this philosophy is still known in the Batak community. However, the problem is in the implementation. This study explores and translates the values of Poda Na Lima to draw their relevance to the potential for solving the Covid-19 problem, which is still a problem in the global community. This research and study analyse the Poda Na Lima, a philosophy using the Sociosemiotics analysis knife. The sociosemiotics point of view is appropriate in describing the problems related to this research and study. It becomes a research method, analysis, and conclusion that can ultimately prove that the values and derivatives of the implementation of Poda Na Lima can be used as standards and guidelines for overcoming the Covid-19 problem and any other public health problems.

Abstract

The foundational ethos of a nation-state is inextricably linked with long-standing cultural tenets, often encapsulated in a codified philosophy that predates the state's formal establishment. These traditional values serve as an authoritative framework for addressing complex societal issues. Specifically, in the Indonesian context, there is a discernible challenge characterized by a multifaceted set of issues and inherent complexities in devising effective solutions. It is posited that these dilemmas can be ameliorated by adhering to the country's ingrained philosophical and traditional mores. If such a philosophy is rooted in religious principles, it is only through the application of these religious teachings that the veracity of traditional customs can be affirmed. In this regard, Islam is particularly salient as a religion of 'rahmatan lil'alamin,' possessing a universal applicability that encompasses all facets of human existence. The impetus for this research lies in its potential to catalyze a reorientation of societal perspectives, specifically among the Batak tribe. The objective is to align communal practices, including architectural and infrastructural developments, with the precepts of the Poda Na Lima philosophy. This alignment will be achieved by first establishing the points of congruence between the Poda Na Lima philosophy and the tribe’s religious and ethnic identity as Muslims and Bataks, respectively. To achieve this, the study employs qualitative methodologies guided by critical discourse analysis. The results unequivocally indicate that the quintessential principles enshrined in the Poda Na Lima philosophy are not merely instructive but also possess significant intrinsic value. Moreover, the entirety of the Poda Na Lima's content is congruent with and complementary to, Islamic doctrine.

Abstract

The extended journey towards both economic and political modernization within Indonesia's democratic framework has led to a transformation of its society into an industrialized community. However, this change has largely failed to boost the economic prospects of the general populace. Moreover, the turbulent nature of Indonesia's democratic evolution has not aligned well with the principles of open dialogue and inclusive discussion, as advocated by its foundational philosophy, Pancasila. Over the last 15 years, the amalgamation of development-oriented politics and political liberalization has exerted a detrimental impact on the nation's unique cultural identity and wisdom. The upcoming research aims to revisit and revitalize the indigenous political ideologies and social values held by various ethnic groups and community structures in Indonesia. The objective is to shed light on the unexplored potential of social capital to enhance the quality of the country's democratic governance. The research will focus on two main categories for its case study: Firstly, it will delve into ethnic groups, concentrating specifically on the Wajo and Minang communities; Secondly, it will study communities that are active in a number of urban parks across the Java region. The study is rooted in the theoretical framework of consultative democracy and will utilize qualitative research methods interpreted through the lens of political anthropology to obtain nuanced, context-rich insights.

Abstract

This article critically examines Darwin's theory of human origins through a phenomenological lens, highlighting perceived misconceptions embedded within the narrative of evolution. While Darwin's theory, emphasizing natural selection and biological processes, has profoundly influenced scientific thought, it has also faced significant scrutiny for its reductionist approach to human existence. This study explores how the theory often overlooks humanity's spiritual, cultural, and moral dimensions, reducing humans to mere biological entities. By analyzing phenomenological critiques and participant narratives, the article reveals the limitations of Darwinian evolution in fully explaining human consciousness, identity, and purpose. It also discusses the cultural and ethical implications of applying Darwinian principles to society, particularly concerning social inequality and moral relativism. The study concludes by advocating for integrative frameworks that combine scientific understanding with humanistic values, encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue and alternative perspectives on human origins.

Abstract

This study examines how contemporary world history is linguistically and theologically constructed through discourses of crisis, transition, risk, misinformation, religious identity, and moral accountability. Using a qualitative-dominant mixed-method design, the study integrates Critical Discourse Analysis, corpus-assisted discourse analysis, and Islamic theological hermeneutics to analyze publicly accessible institutional, geopolitical, digital-governance, and religious-public texts published or updated between 2024 and 2026. The findings show that contemporary global discourse frames the present as unstable, the future as threatened, and historical change as a managerial problem of security, governance, and adaptation. At the same time, Islamic theological concepts such as sunnatullah, fitnah, ajal, qadar, ibrah, tabayyun, and akhirah provide a moral framework for interpreting time as an arena of human responsibility before God, society, and creation. This study proposes sacred temporal discourse analysis as an interdisciplinary framework for reading world history as a linguistic-theological formation in which language, ideology, power, memory, revelation, and moral imagination intersect. The implication is that contemporary global crises should not be understood only through political, technological, or risk-management perspectives, but also through ethical reflection on truth, justice, accountability, and civilizational responsibility.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategic function of linguistics in forming transnational geopolitical configurations from 2015 to 2025. The paper draws from 250 purposively sampled texts official speeches, media releases, and mainstream news and media coverage, from the US, Russia, China, and the European Union. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), semiotics, and linguistic pragmatics serve as the conceptual basis to explain how political elites employ discourse strategies to shape a global public opinion by using strategies such as framing, euphemism, delegitimising opponents' claims, and conceptual metaphors. Quantitatively, the study indicates framing (35%) and euphemism (28%) when utilised by the United States and China, respectively, served to strengthen legitimacy for foreign policy, to frame 'good' narratives, delegitimisation (22%) was used mainly by the EU and Russia to frame a good enemy, and conceptual metaphors (15%) - though the least used, were also effective in framing normative imperatives.

Abstract

This linguistic study examines legal rules on language preservation using legal theory, critical discourse analysis, and corpus-based methods. We use a 2021–2026 legal-linguistic corpus of 126 public documents. Qualitative, quantitative, and triangulated analyses explore how legal discourse shapes preservation policies. The research finds that the wording and context of policy statements greatly influence their effectiveness. Heritage establishment, when supported by obligatory language and institutional enforcement, shows the strongest correlation with preservation (r = 0.73, p < .01). By contrast, references to freedoms in the Bracketing Frame Section are mostly declarative. They state rights rather than implement them, and those rights are only partly realised in practice. The Resource Frame introduces economic considerations and reduces the likelihood of Minicommodification, which is symbolic policy change. Qualitative analysis shows that legal texts function as performative discursive systems. In these systems, language and structure are crucial. Triangulated global data indicate that regions with enforceable legal frameworks demonstrate stronger language vitality, especially in educational settings. This contrasts with areas experiencing domain loss. However, digital linguistic equality remains uneven. Some processes are inaccessible to those outside relevant institutions. The study concludes that law serves as a linguistic agent. Effective preservation depends on enforceable, discourse-sensitive legal frameworks that adapt to technology.

Abstract

Modern foreign language (MFL) teaching is informed by cognitive schemas, ideological discourse and technology-mediated instructional approaches, but these dimensions are often addressed separately. This study set out to explore how cognitive, ideological, and technical architectures affect experiences of language learning in the current digital environment and to advance an integrated model that repurposes language teaching as a multi-layered semiotic system. A mixed-methods design was employed using a tri-varied research framework that combined Cognitive Linguistics Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and Technology-Enhanced Learning. Data were obtained from 120 hours of classroom discourse, 86 teaching materials, and 214 student responses collected between 2024 and 2026. Results reveal that classroom language is influenced by implicit mental schemas, discursive power relations, and algorithmic mediation. Quantitatively, the density of conceptual metaphors in classroom discourse positively correlated with learner understanding (r = .62, p < .05). Teacher explanation, measured by time spent on didactic instruction, decreased student engagement (β = .01), while dialogic discourse, measured by the frequency of teacher-student exchanges, increased engagement (β = .36, p < .05). Conversely, prescribed use of modality showed a negative association with engagement (β = -.29, p < .05). At the qualitative level, modality, transitivity and evaluative language indexed authority and transmitted vertical epistemic relations of knowledge. The AI-mediated feedback also exhibited tendencies toward standardisation; for instance, 83% of non-standard language forms were marked as incorrect. The authors argue that cognitive, ideological and technological dimensions are co-constitutive rather than separate. It has to do with more critical, responsive and equitable language pedagogy.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia’s recent engagement with BRICS marked a strategic recalibration of its foreign policy amid intensifying great-power rivalries. Objective: This study aimed to examine how Indonesia employed a diplomatic hedging strategy to balance its relations with BRICS and the United States within an emerging multipolar world order. Methods: Using a qualitative research design that integrated document analysis and elite interviews, this paper analyzed Indonesia’s diplomatic discourse, policy statements, and trade relations during the 2022–2025 period. Results: The findings revealed that Indonesia’s multi-alignment behavior represented an adaptive evolution of its bebas aktif doctrine, emphasizing pragmatic engagement with competing powers while avoiding overdependence on any single bloc. This hedging behavior was manifested through selective economic cooperation, diversified partnerships, and cautious political signaling. Conclusion: This study contributed to the growing literature on middle-power diplomacy by offering empirical insights into Southeast Asia’s strategic autonomy under global systemic change. This paper argues that Indonesia’s multi-alignment policy strengthened regional stability while preserving strategic sovereignty within ASEAN’s centrality framework.
