Abstract

This study examined the English language needs of students studying digital business, aiming to clarify their difficulties and provide recommendations for educators and policymakers. English is essential for communication between multinational corporations, start-ups, and freelancers in the digital business sector, making collaboration, communication, and information sharing easier. Students from various linguistic backgrounds may struggle to assimilate to English language requirements for their academic and professional tasks. The lack of knowledge on the specific English language requirements of students studying digital business was the cause of the current research gap. This study reveals that digital business students prioritize speaking skills, particularly in phone conversations and meeting discussions, as they are crucial for real-time interactions in the digital business environment. Writing skills are deemed less important, with 15% deemed very important. This suggests a shift towards skills better suited for immediate, interpersonal exchanges. The students also rank the functions of English language proficiency most frequently employed in their daily tasks, such as answering meeting questions, participating in discussions, speaking to foreigners by phone, answering working interview questions, scheduling appointments, writing CVs and application letters, writing reports, and responding to emails. The most prominent issues identified were presenting project/term papers orally, executing simulation tasks, attending group talks, and accurately speaking words. Listening skills were also identified as significant, with 55% of respondents stating their difficulty in capturing lecture notes via listening. Reading and analytical skills were identified as the most challenging, with 55% identifying key parts in texts and 35% predicting new vocabulary interpretations from context. Writing skills were identified as the most challenging, with 40% stating their difficulty. These findings emphasized the need for tailored approaches to enhance academic success and prepare students for the dynamic communication demands of the digital business world.

Abstract

The Community Service Activity (PKM) held at the Algaf Building, Politeknik Piksi Input Serang, was an initiative designed to motivate and enlighten high school graduates from SMA/SMK/MA/equivalent about the importance of higher education, especially in vocational fields. Attended by 225 participants, including students and teachers from various regions of Serang, as well as lecturers and educational staff from Politeknik Piksi Input Serang, the event offered a series of presentations, lectures, group discussions, and in-depth Q&A sessions. The goal was to broaden participants' perspectives on the opportunities and career prospects achievable through vocational education. Additionally, a campus tour provided a tangible overview of the learning environment and available facilities, stimulating participants' interest in pursuing further education. While the event was successful in delivering information and motivation, it fell short in allocating sufficient time for direct interaction, necessitating future adjustments. Suggestions for improvement include extending the time for discussion sessions and utilizing information technology to maximize participant engagement and satisfaction.

Abstract

This paper examines the linguistic meaning of language in memes and jokes on the internet, focusing on the dynamic nature of online platforms like Reddit. It aims to understand the language distinctions underlying humor found in these platforms, which often defy accepted linguistic conventions. Implicit meaning, derived from the verb "to imply," refers to something that a speech implies but does not state outright. In conversational encounters, the idea of cooperation between speakers is inextricably linked to the understanding of implicature. The paper highlights the importance of understanding the linguistic features of jokes and memes on the internet, as they become a breeding ground for linguistic innovation. The meaning of a sentence can be divided into conventional meaning, conversational implicatures, and conventional implicatures. Internet memes and jokes, often used for propaganda, satire, and defamation, can contain implicatures. The study examined internet-published memes and jokes involving implicatures and aimed to identify other joke styles and implicatures. Gender-related implicatures are common in jokes, with conventional implicature being the most common. Examples include jokes about women, cultural basic jokes, and social phenomena. The analysis of implicatures in jokes involves evaluating extrinsic linguistic factors, including social and cultural dimensions, and the influence of context on the inferred meaning. Overall, the interpretation of internet memes and jokes is influenced by their linguistic features.

Abstract

This study investigates the prevalent translation errors in English abstracts written by vocational accounting students at an Indonesian polytechnic university. Given the technical nature of accounting and the growing significance of English as a global academic and business language, the ability to accurately translate complex accounting terminology is essential for students. This research aims to identify the common types of translation errors, their underlying causes, and the pedagogical implications for improving language proficiency among these students. Data were collected from a sample of 30 students who translated their Indonesian abstracts into English. The analysis focused on identifying lexical, syntactical, and grammatical errors. The findings revealed that lexical errors, such as the misuse of accounting terms, were the most frequent, followed by syntactical errors that disrupted the logical flow of sentences, and grammatical errors that undermined the readability and professionalism of the abstracts. The study highlights the challenges posed by the reliance on translation software, which often fails to capture the nuances of technical language. Practical translation exercises, peer reviews, and the use of AI-powered translation tools are recommended to enhance students' proficiency. By addressing these challenges, educators can improve the quality of academic writing among vocational students, ensuring they can effectively communicate their research findings in English. This study hopefully contributes to the development of better teaching strategies and translation support systems, ultimately preparing students for success in the global academic and professional environment.

Abstract

This study examined two instructional methods of grammar teaching for polytechnic students: the traditional method of translation and memorization and Content-Based Instruction (CBI). By involving first-year students majoring in Cyber Security, this study measured the impact of each method using pre- and post-tests focusing on key grammar topics integrated into IT content. The results showed that students in the CBI class outperformed those in the conventional class, wherein 53.34% of the former group attained converted grades of A and B while only 26.67% achieved similar grades in the latter. The students’ feedback collected through questionnaires indicated that they preferred CBI because it was more relevant and applicable to reality, thus motivating them and making the grammar understandable in context. CBI was effective in ESP settings because it combined language skills with subject matter, but it necessitated instructors to handle both language teaching and content area. The current study highlighted that CBI could be a more meaningful grammar instruction for providing better learner outcomes in technical fields.
