Abstract

The English language mentoring program for children at Rumah Peradaban Banten, utilizing the Total Physical Response (TPR) and Picture Sequence methods, aimed to enhance the English skills of the participating children. The TPR method, which combines physical movement with language learning, proved effective in introducing new vocabulary in an enjoyable way. Meanwhile, the Picture Sequence method engaged children in creating stories based on a series of images, helping them develop critical thinking, enrich vocabulary, and practice both speaking and writing skills in English. This activity was conducted on Sunday, July 28, 2024, and August 4, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with 57 participants who demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the mentoring sessions. The results of the pre-test and post-test showed improvement in the participants' English abilities, with an average score increase of 25-40 points. The success of this mentoring program proves that TPR and Picture Sequence are effective approaches for teaching English to children, yielding positive impacts on their skills. This program not only provided a fun learning experience but also successfully improved the children’s English abilities, making it a model that can be replicated in other communities to enhance the quality of English education.

Abstract

This study explores Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) among students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses across three majors: Business Digital, Cyber Security, and Tax Accounting. FLA, characterized by apprehension in language learning, significantly impacts students’ academic performance, particularly in specialized fields where language proficiency is crucial. Using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), the study assessed communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation among 160 first-year polytechnic students. The results indicated that Business Digital students reported the highest overall anxiety, particularly due to fear of peer ridicule during speaking activities. Cyber Security students experienced significant anxiety related to comparisons with peers, feeling less competent in language skills. Conversely, Tax Accounting students showed the lowest anxiety related to correction feedback, reflecting a tolerance for learning from mistakes. The findings suggest that each major's unique demands shape the nature of FLA, highlighting the need for tailored instructional strategies to mitigate anxiety and enhance language learning in ESP contexts.

Abstract

This study is investigating the efficacy of using a Chatbot to enhance vocabulary acquisition in ESP, particularly in Business English. A total of 44 undergraduate students from a Polytechnic University in Indonesia participated in an experimental design. Later, they were divided into two groups: an experimental group that was engaged in continuous interaction with the chatbot for 14 weeks and the control group, following traditional instruction. Data collection was done through pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. The experimental group significantly exceeded the control group in the post-test scores, according to the results; hence, the Chatbot is useful to support students in vocabulary learning. Such a fact was again asserted in the interview results, which showed the Chatbot's practicality and simplicity of usage for the participants in working with ESP vocabulary. Although positive, it has its limitation of a small sample size and focused on vocabulary alone. These limitations themselves suggest the need for further research. The future directions of such studies need to look into the larger vista of chatbot usage relating to other language skills also and the potential of this tool across educational settings and disciplines.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in English writing education has emerged as a transformative approach, offering innovative solutions to traditional challenges. This study explores the pedagogical benefits, challenges, and implications of using AI chatbots in teaching English writing, employing a library research approach to analyze existing literature. The findings highlight the significant advantages of AI chatbots, including personalized, real-time feedback, enhanced learner engagement, and scalability in addressing diverse student needs. However, challenges such as limited contextual understanding, ethical concerns about data privacy, and the risk of over-reliance on technology are identified as critical issues. The study underscores the importance of blending AI chatbots with human instruction to achieve balanced and comprehensive learning outcomes. Recommendations include equipping educators with digital literacy skills, addressing ethical and accessibility concerns, and fostering collaboration between technology developers and educators. The study concludes that AI chatbots, when thoughtfully integrated, have the potential to enhance English writing education, fostering inclusivity and preparing students for real-world communication demands

Abstract

Finding out what holds back students from doing well on the TOEFL listening exam is central to this study's overall aim. In this study, the quantitative descriptive approach was used. A sample of 36 participants from Piksi Input Serang's fifth semester accounting diploma class served as the basis sample for this study. The study instrument was based on an instrument cited from Hamouda (2013). There are a total of 27 inquiries spread across 7 sections in the questionnaire. The majority of participants, as measured by both mean and dominating factor, identify problems with the physical environment, such as distractions from background noise and distorted audio from a low-quality CD player, as significant barriers to their studies. It's safe to say that the participants have it toughest when it comes to the listening test's actual material and environment.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas penerapan Good University Governance (GUG) dalam meningkatkan kepuasan mahasiswa pada perguruan tinggi vokasi. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi persepsi mahasiswa aktif salah satu Politeknik di Serang, Banten, terhadap implementasi prinsip GUG serta mengukur tingkat kepuasan mereka pada empat bidang layanan institusi: tata kelola dan kerjasama, kemahasiswaan, keuangan dan sarana prasarana, serta pendidikan. Metode yang digunakan adalah survei deskriptif kuantitatif dengan instrumen kuesioner daring berbasis skala Likert empat poin, disebarkan kepada 374 mahasiswa sensus populasi TA 2024. Hasil analisis deskriptif menunjukkan skor rata‑rata antar bidang berkisar antara 3,225–3,360 (kategori “Baik”), dengan dimensi assurance (3,405) dan akses Wi‑Fi (3,359) sebagai skor tertinggi, sementara ketersediaan makanan terjangkau (2,919) dan partisipasi tata pamong (3,222) relatif lebih rendah. Simpulan penelitian menegaskan bahwa GUG di institusi ini secara umum memuaskan mahasiswa, meski perbaikan layanan dan mekanisme partisipasi perlu diutamakan untuk peningkatan mutu lebih lanjut.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of understanding tax regulations on taxpayer compliance at the Cilegon Primary Tax Office (KPP Pratama Cilegon). This research is motivated by the importance of improving taxpayer compliance to optimize state revenue, with the level of understanding of tax regulations identified as a key influencing factor. This study employs a quantitative approach using a survey method. Primary data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 60 registered individual taxpayers at KPP Pratama Cilegon. Data were analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, simple linear regression analysis, and t-tests, processed with SPSS version 27. The results indicate that understanding tax regulations has a positive and significant effect on taxpayer compliance. The t-value was 7.710, which is greater than the t-table value of 2.001, with a significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.506 shows that understanding of tax regulations explains 50.6% of the variation in taxpayer compliance, while the remaining 49.4% is explained by other factors not included in this study. These findings confirm that the higher a taxpayer’s understanding of tax regulations, the higher their compliance in fulfilling tax obligations.

Abstract

Politeknik Piksi Input Serang mengadakan kegiatan edukasi untuk mahasiswa baru, fokus pada pentingnya penguasaan bahasa asing, terutama bahasa Inggris dan Mandarin, dalam dunia kerja. Kegiatan ini merupakan bagian dari sesi Pengenalan Kehidupan Kampus Mahasiswa Baru (PKKMB) dan menggunakan berbagai metode pembelajaran interaktif. Metode yang digunakan meliputi mind mapping untuk membantu mengorganisasi informasi, sharing experience dengan narasumber profesional, dan video pembelajaran yang memfasilitasi pemahaman visual dan auditori. Selain itu, simulasi wawancara kerja dan permainan edukatif dirancang untuk memberikan pengalaman praktis dalam penggunaan bahasa asing. Hasil pre-test menunjukkan pemahaman awal mahasiswa yang masih rendah, dengan rata-rata persentase jawaban benar sebesar 49.31%. Setelah mengikuti kegiatan, hasil post-test menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan, dengan rata-rata persentase jawaban benar mencapai 76.27%. Kegiatan ini berhasil menciptakan suasana edukasi yang dinamis dan interaktif, serta memberikan motivasi bagi mahasiswa untuk terus mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa mereka, mempersiapkan diri untuk karir yang sukses di masa depan ketika mereka lulus dan bersaing di dunia kerja.

Abstract

English is a crucial international language for global communication, science, technology, business, and culture. Being fluent in English opens doors to personal and professional success. The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that measures English language competency in various contexts, including academic and professional. It consists of four parts: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. TOEFL is essential for vocational student graduates, especially students, who seek work, study abroad, or participate in exchange programs. It also increases the chances of getting a scholarship, as many educational institutions and international scholarship programs require good TOEFL results. In the world of work, English language competency is often required by multinational companies, giving workers a competitive advantage in international business, trade, diplomacy, and technology. Piksi Input Serang Polytechnic requires D3 student graduates to have a TOEFL score above 450 to ensure adequate mastery of English in the international world. A TOEFL PBT training was held for vocational students via the Zoom Meeting platform, using lecture, discussion, and question and answer methods.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover how English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students perceived the utilization of digital resources during their language-learning process. A questionnaire with 20 statements divided into categories like usability, engagement, problems, and recommendations was completed by 28 study participants. According to a Likert scale that ranged from highly agree to strongly disagree, the participants gave their answers. The research found that ESP students generally had favourable opinions of digital resources. They thought the resources were easy to use, available on a variety of platforms and devices, and offered flexibility in their study. The participants acknowledged the motivating qualities of digital resources as well as their role in motivation and the growth of English language proficiency. They did, nonetheless, draw attention to several difficulties, such as the need for more help and technical problems. These opinions of ESP students toward digital materials are revealed, and this knowledge aids teachers and curriculum writers in creating resources for language acquisition that are beneficial. Future studies can concentrate on resolving the issues found and improving the advantages of digital resources in ESP scenarios.
