Abstract

Bekasam is a local food from South Sumatera Indonesia, which is obtained through fermentation of fish. Previous study has shown that fermented food contained Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) bacteria, such as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus sp, Pediococus sp and Weissella sp. The study was conducted to identify isolate LAB from bekasam. Bekasam contained fish, rice, and salt with a certain ratio. Further isolation of isolated LAB isolate, then performed PCR for bacterial analysis. Isolate 1 showed alleged bacteria Staphylococcus sp, non pathogen, while isolate 2 leads to Lactobacillus sp. The PCR results show the suitability of the bands formed between the Lactobacillus standard and the isolates. Keywords: bacteria, lactobacillus, acid

Abstract

Background: Endometriosis implant has been known to express aromatase enzyme, Cytochrome p450 that catalyzes androgen into estrogen. It causes local estrogen production, leading to increased estrogen level, and subsequently triggers endometriosis lesion. CYP19 gene resided at chromosome 15q21.1 is the biggest component of aromatase coding cytochrome p450 enzyme. Objective: To identify relationship between aromatase gene polymorphism CYP19 Val 80 and the risk of endometriosis. Methods: This is an observational case-control study using frozen DNA sample from women with endometriosis and/ or adenomyosis who had undergone laparotomy/ laparoscopy at Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang January-November 2013. Samples were amplified and cut by PCR-FRLP using Rsa1 restriction enzyme. Results were divided into A/A genotype (homozygote mutant), G/A (heterozygote mutant), and G/G (homozygote wild type). Data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 version. Results: PCR-RFLP results for A/A genotype were 20 (21.3%) in endometriosis group and 8 (8.5%) in control group. G/A genotype were 18 (19.1%) in endometriosis group and 22 (23.4%) in control group. G/G genotype were 9 (9.6%) and 17 (18.1%) in endometriosis group and control group, respectively. There was significant increase risk of endometriosis in women carrying genotype A/A to those with genotype G/G with OR 4.722 (p<0.05). Conclusion: Polymorphism on aromatase gene CYP19 Val 80 A/A increases risk of endometriosis.

Abstract

Introduction: Approximately 10 - 15% of women in their reproductive age experience endometriosis. Endometriosis is defined by chronic discomfort and pain, specifically dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and dyschezia. A recent study has provided insight into the involvement of oxidative stress in the progression of endometriosis. Oxidative stress refers to an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, resulting in inflammation within the peritoneal cavity. This comprehensive analysis examined the efficacy of antioxidant administration and its impact on pain symptoms associated with endometriosis. Method: This study reviewed literature by searching the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochran Library databases. The search query included “endometriosis” and “antioxidant.” The study was reviewed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards. The scope of analysis was restricted to clinical trials conducted exclusively from 2012 to 2023. Result: A total of 10 studies were incorporated, encompassing the utilisation of vitamin C and vitamin E, N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, bromelain, zinc, melatonin, and combination oral contraception. After administering antioxidants, the analysis of different groups consistently revealed a greater degree of improvement in dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia, and chronic pelvic pain. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and N-acetylcysteine act as antioxidants and effectively decrease oxidative stress and the development of endometriosis discomfort. Conclusion: using antioxidants, including vitamin C and vitamin E, or N-acetylcysteine, has a beneficial effect in decreasing pain sensations associated with endometriosis. Penulisan systematic review disesuaikan dengan pedoman professed reporting for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA).

Abstract

Learning Enrichment to increase knowledge about ambiguous genitalia in students at STIKES Abdurrahman Palembang. Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) is a rare disease in which atypical gonads, chromosomes, and sex anatomy are found. Although it has a significant impact on both the physical and mental health of individuals with DSD, DSD cases are often undetected and underdiagnosed. Efforts to enrich material and learning to training on DSD for prospective midwife health workers are one of the real actions that can be taken to increase knowledge and awareness of DSD which is then expected to increase early identification efforts to improve the quality of life and patient outcomes. This community service activity was carried out for one semester through a series of activities in the form of guest lectures for enrichment of learning which were carried out in stages three times online for 55 students of STIKES Abdurrahman Palembang. Measurement of the level of knowledge of STIKES Abdurrahman students was carried out twice, namely before the series of activities began (pre-test) and after the activities were completed (post-test). From the results of the pre- and post-test, an increase in knowledge was obtained, which was originally only 36.4% with a sufficient level of knowledge at the time of the pre-test, to 69.1% with a sufficient level of knowledge at the time of the post-test. It is hoped that with the enrichment of learning, prospective midwives can know and understand DSD so that in the future they can improve early screening for ambiguous genitalia cases which can lead to improving the quality of life of sufferers.
