Abstract

Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, as traditional Islamic educational institutions, have undergone significant transformations in recent decades. Adopting a modern curriculum is important to ensure that pesantren students have skills that are relevant to the times. By integrating religious and general sciences, pesantren can produce graduates who not only have a strong Islamic understanding, but are also competitive in the world of work. While existing studies have explored the integration of modern subjects into pesantren curricula in several regions, there remains a research gap concerning how this integration unfolds in East Java, where distinct cultural and regional dynamics influence educational practices. Therefore, this research aims at analysing the development patterns of pesantren in Indonesia in a case study of the Sidosermo Pesantren Area in Surabaya by highlighting how they integrate deeply rooted traditions with the demands of modernity. Using a qualitative approach, this study collected data through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and literature study. The results revealed that the pesantren managed to maintain traditional values, such as the teaching of the yellow book and grave pilgrimage, while adopting modern elements that include formal curriculum, digital technology, and professional-based management. This integration process not only strengthens the role of pesantren as centers of religious education, but also places them as agents of social change that are responsive to the challenges of the times. Nevertheless, pesantren are faced with a great challenge in maintaining a balance between maintaining tradition and innovating. This study demonstrates that the success of pesantren in facing modernity depends on their ability to hold on to fundamental Islamic values, open to global developments and information technology today. The recommendations include developing a hybrid curriculum combining religion, science, and technology; integrating e-learning tools; promoting pesantren-based economic initiatives; and strengthening alumni networks to support institutional growth and student careers.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic triggered a severe economic crisis that significantly affected the legal and social capacity of Indonesian Muslims to fulfill religious obligations, particularly the performance of hajj. In Jember Regency, a substantial number of registered hajj pilgrims cancelled their hajj registration by withdrawing the initial deposit due to economic hardship during and after the pandemic. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of hajj registration cancellation from a socio-legal perspective by examining the rational considerations of pilgrims and their normative justification within Islamic law, particularly through rational choice theory and fiqh al-awlawiyyat (jurisprudence of priorities). This research employs a qualitative field approach with a phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving pilgrims who cancelled their hajj registration as a result of pandemic-related economic disruption. The findings demonstrate that declining household income caused by the death of family breadwinners, disrupted business cash flow, and a sharp decrease in small-scale enterprise revenues constituted the primary factors behind hajj cancellation. Faced with urgent legal and moral obligations such as debt repayment, employee wages, and daily subsistence needs, pilgrims made rational decisions to prioritize immediate necessities over maintaining their hajj quota. From the perspective of Islamic law, this decision aligns with the principle of fiqh priority, which emphasizes the fulfillment of human rights and obligations before performing acts of worship related to the rights of God. This study contributes to socio-legal scholarship by illustrating how economic rationality, legal consciousness, and Islamic normative reasoning interact in shaping religious decision-making during times of crisis.

Abstract

The globalization of Islamic traditions through diaspora movements presents a unique opportunity to examine how classical Sufi teachings adapt to contemporary socio-religious contexts. This study investigates the actualization of Al-Haddadiyyah Sufi ethics within Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), focusing on how Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad's six core humanistic values explicitly articulated in his works, particularly Nasaih al-Diniyah and Risalat al-Muawanah are transmitted, interpreted, and practiced in daily educational life. Through qualitative field research in three pesantren in East Java, Indonesia, this study explores: (1) the pedagogical mechanisms of transmitting Al-Haddad's ethical teachings, (2) the manifestation of six core humanistic values in pesantren community life, and (3) the synthesis between classical Sufi wisdom and modern educational challenges. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with kyai (religious leaders), ustadz (teachers), and santri (students), and documentation analysis. Findings reveal that Al-Haddadiyyah ethics are not merely preserved as textual heritage but are dynamically actualized through habitual practices (ta'wid), communal rituals (majalis), and interpersonal relationships. The values of kaff al-adza (non-harm), al-mu'awanah (mutual assistance), al-shohbat (companionship), al-'adlu (justice), al-rifq (gentleness), and al-tasamuh (tolerance) function as living ethical frameworks that address contemporary issues such as bullying, intolerance, and moral degradation among youth. This research contributes to Islamic Civilization studies by demonstrating how Hadhrami Sufi traditions maintain their relevance through adaptive transmission while preserving their essential spiritual-ethical core, offering insights into the enduring vitality of Islamic educational traditions in modern contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines how digital platforms mediate fatwa contestation within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and reshape the relations among organizational, epistemic, charismatic, and digital capital. It compares two disputes: a vertical disagreement between PBNU and PCNU Jember over Friday (Jumu’ah) prayers on public roads, and a horizontal disagreement between PWNU East Java and PWNU Yogyakarta over cryptocurrency. Using qualitative digital ethnography, document analysis, and manual sentiment coding, the study traces the circulation of fatwa texts, media reports, and Facebook discussions across institutional and digital settings. The dataset comprises eight public online sources—two news reports and six Facebook posts—which generated 5,716 visible interactions: 3,594 reactions, 871 comments, and 1,251 shares. Sentiment was coded in 453 relevant comments from three cryptocurrency threads, while the remaining threads were examined qualitatively. The findings show that digital platforms make internal disagreements publicly visible while allowing them to remain institutionally manageable. Cryptocurrency discussions fostered relatively neutral and constructive inquiry, whereas the street Jumu’ah dispute produced sharper contestation over textual authority, organizational loyalty, adab, identity, and affective legitimacy. The article conceptualizes this condition as managed fragmentation within algorithmic digital authority and argues that increased digital visibility does not necessarily confer religious legitimacy.
