Abstract

Kata kunci: absurd, absurditas, benalu, pemberontakan ABSTRACTThis paper aims to show the forms of absurdity in Nescio's novella, Si Benalu. The forms of absurdity in the novella are found through an analysis of how the main character Japi sees his surrounding life and other people's judgments of Japi, who is called Si Benalu in the text. To analyze the concept of absurdity, the writer uses the concept of absurdity by Albert Camus. The result shows a journey of awareness of the main character Japi towards the absurdity of life. Japi, with his idealism, chooses to become a "parasite" to show his rebellion against a life that he considers absurd. Besides, some forms of absurdity are also demonstrated through Japi's interactions with his three friends, namely Bavink, Koekebakker, and Hoyer. Japi's idealism makes him seen absurd by his friends. However, his failure to maintain his idealism makes his life ended tragically. Japi finally chooses to commit suicide, meaning that Japi consciously relinquishes power over his autonomous self to this absurd world.Key words: absurd, absurdity, parasite, rebellion

Abstract

Abstract This paper aims to show how the forms of multiculturalism values are displayed in Amina's life and how multiculturalism can change the perspective of other characters towards multiculturalism in the novel Amina's Voice (2017), written by a Pakistani-American writer, Hena Khan. This novel tells about a girl named Amina who has a family background from Pakistan and has long lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. Despite living in a dominant Western culture, the Amina family consistently upholds Pakistani cultural values and uses their native customs daily. The differences between these two cultures often lead to conflicts experienced by Amina and other characters in the story. Despite encountering obstacles, Amina is shown still to practice the values of multiculturalism in her daily life. This study uses the concept of indicators of multiculturalism values proposed by Tilaar (2004) and the concept of acculturation written by Berry (2005). This research shows that there are forms of multiculturalism values found in the three spheres of Amina's life, namely in the family, school, and social environment. The indicators of multicultural values are learning in diversity, mutual trust, mutual understanding, mutual respect, open-mindedness, appreciation and interdependence (mutual dependence), and conflict resolution. In addition, the present writer also found that the practice of multiculturalism that occurred in the text resulted in an acculturation process that succeeded in changing the perspective of Amina's family members towards the value of multiculturalism. Abstract

Abstract This paper aims to show the representation of Native Americans in Sherman Alexie's short story The Trial of Thomas-Builds-the-Fire, which is part of his story collections The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993). The main character, Thomas-Builds-the-Fire, represents native Americans. This paper will analyze Thomas as a subaltern who was oppressed by white hegemony. The presence of fairy tales as media voicing out Thomas' thoughts and feeling as the subaltern interprets something deeper. The present writer will use Gayatri C. Spivak's theories which are subaltern and representation, to analyze the forms of Native American representation. The result shows there are two forms of representation used in the story. They are "to represent," meaning "the idea of representing something," and "re-present," meaning "the idea of bringing back." However, both forms of representation stated in the story failed to make the subaltern speak or be heard. Keywords: dongeng, pribumi Amerika, representasi, subaltern

Abstract

This paper aims to show the form of subalternity which occurs in the movie 12 Years a Slave (2013), a biopic of a slave and his life in the times of racism and slaves in America in the year 1841. Being a black person during that time was extremely difficult as they were treated as slaves and were sold freely and legally. This movie depicts the life of Solomon Northup, a kidnapped black freeman who was then sold as a slave to pick cotton. With slavery as its background, this movie shows a lot of graphic torture scenes which depict the cruelty with which white people tortured black people. To find the subalternity experienced by Solomon, the author will analyze the movie’s narrative and cinematography. Furthermore, this research will be based on Gayatri Spivak’s (1985) theory which discusses the voiceless and oppressed groups. The result of this research shows that in the movie 12 Years a Slave, subalternity is constantly found in Solomon’s life. Subalternity is reflected through Solomon’s experience as a part of the oppressed group whose lives are controlled by white people (the oppressor), whose voices are absent and who could only fight with hope and thoughts.

Abstract

This research article explores the application of Jungian archetypal theory in analyzing Stephen King's novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The primary focus of this analysis is to uncover the archetypal identities embodied by the central characters, Andy Dufresne and Ellis "Red" Redding. Employing a close-reading method, the researcher examines the novella to gather relevant data for this study. By delving deep into their individual journeys and psychological transformations, the objective of this research is to unveil the underlying archetypal forces that shape their roles within the narrative. Drawing inspiration from Carl Jung's concept of archetypes and the collective unconscious, this analysis identifies Andy Dufresne as a manifestation of the "trickster" and "hero" archetypes, as evidenced by his portrayal in the story. On the other hand, Red embodies the "mentor" archetype, serving as a seasoned inmate and the narrator of the novella. In this way, the study sheds light on the archetypal dimensions present in the characters of the novella.

Abstract

In the film Damsel (2024), directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the traditional damsel in distress narrative is subverted by the character of Princess Elodie, who transforms from a passive pawn to an empowered individual. The film critiques societal structures that objectify women by exploring Elodie’s journey from being a tool in an arranged marriage and a sacrificial victim to confronting a dragon. This study aims to explore how the film portrays the instrumentalization of Elodie through qualitative descriptive methods, grounded in Nussbaum's theory of objectification, particularly the concept of instrumentality. As the result, the study identifies three forms of Elodie's instrumentalization: subjected to an arranged marriage, subjected to a life sacrifice, and subjected to a target for revenge. From these three forms of Elodie's instrumentalization, this film shows Elodie's gradual assertion of autonomy and rejection of the roles assigned to her, deconstructing conventional girl tropes and highlighting the broader implications of challenging patriarchal norms. The finding of the instrumentalization of Elodie in the film Damsel is shown to become more complex along with the resistance carried out to oppose the prevailing patriarchal norms.

Abstract

This study examines the use of culture-based tourist attractions in shaping and enhancing the destination image, with North Sumatra Province as a case study. Using a literature review, the study analyzes data from 49 events categorized into nine types, during 2017. The study highlights how cultural attractions, encompassing cognitive, unique, and affective dimensions, contribute to a robust destination image. The knowledge and historical insights offered through these events influence the cognitive image. The unique image arises from the cultural distinctiveness and creative expressions showcased. The affective image, meanwhile, emerges from the emotional connections and memorable experiences visitors encounter. Through cultural festivals, exhibitions, local traditions, and culinary displays, the study identifies effective strategies for leveraging local cultural assets to boost tourism appeal. It underscores the importance of consistent, innovative cultural programming in sustaining and promoting regional identity. The findings point to the role of cultural tourism in fostering destination loyalty and increasing visitor satisfaction.
