Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VoiceSpice as a language-learning tool, focusing on its usability, advantages, limitations, and overall impact on students' speaking practice by the students’ perceptions. Moreover, much of the current literature focuses on quantitative measures or general outcomes, leaving a gap in understanding students' personal experiences and challenges with recording technology. Without exploring these individual perspectives, it is difficult to address the barriers that may prevent students from fully leveraging these tools for reflective and autonomous learning. The sample in this study consisted of 15 EFL students who studied English at Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu. Data was collected through observation to get a direct picture of the learning activities carried out, then questionnaires were given to all students and to get more in-depth information, after that doing interview were conducted with 15 students. The survey and feedback results indicate that voice recording has proven to be a useful tool for supporting speaking practice in language learning, with user feedback indicating ease of use, convenience, and support for speaking skill development. The conclusion of VoiceSpice has demonstrated its utility in supporting speaking practice, with users praising its ease of use, convenience, and positive impact on speaking skills. While effective for basic language practice, limitations such as unstable sound quality and the absence of advanced features, including pronunciation checking, were noted. This study suggests that improvements in audio quality and the addition of accuracy-checking features could enhance its effectiveness and usability

Abstract

The growing integration of digital tools in language instruction has created new opportunities for improving speaking competence among EFL learners. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Moodle, a widely used Learning Management System (LMS), in enhancing students’ speaking skills in an English course designed for non-English majors. The participants were 30 students from the Accounting Study Program at University of Aisyah Pringsewu, enrolled during the 2024/2025 academic year. A one-group pre-test and post-test design was employed to assess changes in performance following an eight-week Moodle-based intervention. Speaking tasks were delivered through Moodle features, including voice recordings, discussion forums, and peer feedback. Assessments were conducted using standard TOEFL/IELTS-based speaking rubrics. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in speaking scores, with the average rising from 57.63 (pre-test) to 79.73 (post-test). The normality of the data was confirmed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and a paired samples t-test yielded a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), supporting the effectiveness of the intervention. The structured, asynchronous learning environment provided by Moodle enabled students to practice consistently, build confidence, and reduce performance anxiety. Furthermore, the integration of interactive and reflective speaking activities promoted greater learner autonomy. These findings suggest that Moodle can be a valuable platform for fostering speaking development in higher education, particularly for students outside language-related majors. It also highlights the potential of LMS-based instruction to support communicative competence in EFL contexts. Keywords : Moodle, speaking skills, digital learning, EFL students

Abstract

Abstract – Abstract in English This study examines the various categories of illocutionary acts present in the film Agak Laen. The central research question guiding this investigation is: What types of illocutionary acts are utilized in the movie 'Agak Laen'? The primary objective of this research is to systematically categorize the illocutionary acts observed in the film. The methodological approach employed is descriptive qualitative, involving a structured analytical process comprising identification, classification, detailed examination, and final interpretation. Data collection was conducted through repeated viewings of the film, careful listening to character dialogues, and systematic categorization of speech acts based on established linguistic frameworks. The findings reveal that the illocutionary acts in Agak Laen encompass five key types: commissive, representative, directive, expressive, and declarative. Each type serves a distinct communicative function, contributing to the film’s narrative dynamics and interpersonal exchanges. These acts not only facilitate character interactions but also reflect underlying sociocultural nuances embedded within the dialogues. In conclusion, this analysis underscores the significance of illocutionary acts in shaping discourse within cinematic narratives. By identifying and classifying these speech acts, the study highlights their role in conveying intentionality, advancing plot development, and mirroring broader communicative norms. Abstract

Amid the increasing demand for emotionally resonant and learner-driven instruction in EFL contexts, this study offers a novel exploration of how Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) can transform vocabulary acquisition into an affective, immersive, and socially collaborative experience. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the research investigates the lived experiences of 13 second-semester EFL students at Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu as they engaged with gamified platforms such as Wordwall. Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, five key themes emerged: heightened learner interest, enhanced peer interaction, improved retention through contextual and repeated exposure, minor but manageable technological barriers, and deep emotional engagement throughout the learning process. The results indicate that DGBL not only supports cognitive aspects of vocabulary learning but also stimulates learners’ motivation, confidence, and autonomous behavior. These findings highlight the pedagogical potential of integrating digital games into EFL classrooms to enrich both the cognitive and emotional dimensions of language learning

Abstract

The issue of spelling variation between British English (BrE) and American English (AmE) in English- language tourism communication is often overlooked in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction, particularly among learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In reality, such variations can significantly influence how professionalism and message clarity are perceived in global communication contexts. This study aims to explore the spelling preferences used in spoken tourism English among two EFL learners, employing a qualitative case study approach. The research subjects were two fifth-semester students from Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu which were selected using purposive sampling. Data were gathered through transcripts of role-play simulations and reflective interviews, and analyzed using thematic coding and a linguistic observation rubric. The findings reveal that both participants predominantly used AmE spelling, influenced more by exposure to digital media than by systematic linguistic awareness. Nevertheless, BrE forms still emerged, particularly in contexts perceived as formal or institutional. These results highlight a limited metalinguistic awareness of spelling variation, which contributes to inconsistent register use in professional tourism communication. Therefore, it is recommended that English language instruction for tourism explicitly incorporate training on spelling variation and contextual usage to foster communicative competence that is both professional and adaptable in international settings.
