Abstract

Water in tidal lowlands may either lack or excessive.  Neither lack nor excessive of water is demanded for crop cultivation.  Therefore, water management plays an important role in the development of tidal lowland agriculture through maintaining proper water conditions.  Since tidal lowland with certain conditions is considered marginal, its utilization for crop cultivation should maintain its fragile characteristics such that its utilization to support crop production can be sustained.  Continuing use of tidal lowlands for crop production, therefore, requires agricultural ecosystem management through the establishment and measurement of sustainability in water management. Sustainable water management in tidal lowlands for crop production should not only consider the physical resources (infrastructures), but also human resource as well as financial resource.  This paper proposes three agendas for research on water management as follows: (1) identification of specific local water infrastructure developments, (2) initiation of  participatory operation and maintenance of water infrastructures, (3) utilization of self-supporting financial means in water management.

Abstract

South Sumatra has succeeded in meeting local rice needs. Nonetheless, rice production in South Sumatra has not been able to significantly contribute to meeting the ever-growing needs of Indonesia's population. Therefore, the government is always trying to increase rice production by increasing productivity and expanding the rice planting area. Rice is not only an economic good, but has become a political item. Therefore, government intervention is quite intense in stabilizing the availability of rice. One of the interventions carried out by the government of South Sumatra is targeting the planting area as a response to the availability of rice in the previous year. The purpose of this study was to analyze the response of planting area at the farmer level to changes in rice availability and supply elasticity in South Sumatra by using the previous year's planted area and the availability of rice from South Sumatra as determining indicators. The method used in this study is multiple linear regression using secondary data over a period of 20 years. The results show that the availability of rice in South Sumatra significantly affects the area planted with an elastic supply elasticity. Therefore, government programs such as printing new land or adding planting area (LTT), land optimization through increasing the planting index, and using abandoned land are urgently needed to support sustainable rice self-sufficiency in South Sumatra. Abstract

High productivity was influenced by optimum production input. Efforts to optimize rice production results include examining the effectiveness of factors that influence rice productivity. This research was useful for providing levels of effective and efficient use of inputs to create efficient use of inputs in rice farming. The research aimed to analyze factors that influence rice productivity, analyze the efficiency of using production inputs in rice farming, and calculate rice farming income. This research was conducted in Ulak Jeremun Village, SP Padang District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. The location selection was carried out purposively or deliberately due to the reduction in planting area. Data collection was carried out from August to September 2023. The research method used in this research was the Survey Method. The sampling method used was a simple random sampling method with a total of 60 farmers as respondents. The data used in this research consists of primary data and secondary data. The results of the research show that (1) Factors that have a significant influence on rice productivity in Ulak Jeremun Village are land area, urea fertilizer, and TSP fertilizer. In contrast, those that do not have a significant influence are the dosage of phonska, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and the number of workers. (2) The efficiency of production inputs in terms of price for the dose used for seeds and the number of workers was efficient. In contrast, the dose used for fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides could be more efficient. (3) Rice farming income in Ulak Jeremun Village was IDR 6,940,251 per hectare per year. Income was relatively small because farmers' land was flooded, so many weeds, which cause pests in the fields, were difficult for farmers to control.

Abstract

The youth have a strategic role to play in driving the progress of the agricultural sector. Their interest in agriculture has become a critical concern for the continuity of this sector. This study aims to identify the factors determining youth interest in the agricultural sector. The respondents of this study comprised 50 individuals aged 14 to 29 years. The research use scoring methods and statistical analysis using logistic regression. The results show that youth interest in the agricultural sector is influenced by age, gender, opportunities, and challenges within the sector. Older respondents demonstrated a higher interest in agriculture. Male youth exhibited greater interest compared to female youth. Furthermore, the availability of opportunities within the agricultural sector was positively associated with youth interest. Conversely, an increase in challenges within the sector led to a decline in youth interest in agriculture.
