Abstract

Socio-entropy system approach (SESA) as used as a comprehensive tool to identify any kind of social shortcoming that might have constrained achievement of government policy on social-forestry. The study objectives were to observe all critical factors on the program implementation of social forestry and to analyze any intervening variables relevant to socio-psychological, socio-ecological, socio-economic, and socio-cultural shortcomings (being called here as socio-entropies) that would have been most crucial to the required policy modification. Samples were taken by purposive sampling and intensively interviewed using questionnaire. Data was analysed using structural equation modeling. The study found out that the socio-psychological entropy which apparently needs to comprehend basically relates to 3-intervening variables of self-esteem, individual compassion, and non-formal education.  Likewise from the socio-ecological stand point, what need to be controled better were the spirit of owning more land plots, and the geo-morphological position of owned land plots. Meanwhile socio-economic entropy seemed to appear as consequences of people efforts in gaining more income due to hedonistic temptation and lack of knowledge about the type of environmentally sound livelihoods. Finally, the crucial factors of socio-cultural entropy were the faded away adat-law, weakening social norms, and  absence of inter-ethnic but more closed, and traditional networking.

Abstract

The knowledge on the behaviour of a building structure is very important in order to predict the behaviour of the structure before it is constructed. This is to ensure that the structure is safe to be used. New current modern technology is now able to predict the behaviour of a structure through computer simulation as a replacement to laboratory tests. However, laboratory tests will also have to be performed in order to validate the proposed computer models. This thesis illustrates the prediction of the structural behaviour of Profiled Steel Sheet Dry Board (PSSDB) which is a structural composite floor system constructed of Bondek II (profiled steel sheeting), Cemboard (dry board) connected via Power Drive DX14 (self drilling, self tapping screws). The floor structure is loaded with a uniformly distributed loading and its behaviour due to the openings at the center of the panel analysed using a finite element perangkat lunak package, LUSAS-FE. The one-way spanning plate have been analysed in this research. The increase in deflection in the longitudinal direction is found to be more influenced by the presence of the opening than the deflection in the transverse direction. The average percentage of the increase in deflection of the one-way spanning plate due to the presence of 20%, 40%, and 60% opening of its overall width are 36%, 108%, and 184% respectively in comparison to the deflection of plate without opening. It has been found that as the size of opening increases, the deflection also increased.

Abstract

The high rate of conversion of rice fields in Indonesia is the logical consequence of the development of a region. Land will have rather a function of the use which has low towards the economic rent of land use which is able to provide higher economic rents. In addition, an increasing number of people are also believed to further increase the pressure on wetland conversion. This study aims to analyze the correlation between the rice fields area in Indonesia with the development of the region, which is proxied by economic growth, and population. The method used is the literature of the time-series data in 1990-2010, which is sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics. Data processing method using Pearson Product Moment analysis. The study showed that variables rice-fields area in Indonesia have a strong relationship with the variables economic growth; and conversely, have a weak association with a variable number of the population. This suggests that the development of an area applying pressure on rice fields land use, so that instead of rice-fields function cannot be avoided. Governments need to issue regulations restricting the transfer of rice-fields function.

Abstract

Muharani L, Yazid M, Adriani D. 2020. Evaluation of smallholder oil palm plantation sustainability in tidal lowlands of Pulau Rimau Sub-District of Banyuasin Regency. Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal: Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(1): 80-88.Oil palm is one of the estate commodities that has an important role in the economic activities of the people. Smallholder oil palm plantation as part of the estate still face several constraints, including lack of productivity, institutional inactivity, plantation management that do not meet the standard, farmers' lack of knowledge, and difficulty in obtaining credit. Due to these constraints, oil palm plantation sustainability is put into priority. Oil palm development issues are discussed not only on the economic aspects but also on the environmental aspects. This research is aimed at analyzing the level of oil palm sustainability and evaluating the condition of smallholder oil palm plantations according to the stages of plant development. This research used survey method and was carried out in tidal lowlands of Pulau Rimau Sub-district, Banyuasin Regency in August-September 2019. Smallholder oil palm households were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. The results showed that there were three aspects of sustainability that were in low criteria, namely institutional, social, and technical aspects. Whereas, economic and environmental aspects were in medium criteria. The average sustainability value of non productive and productive oil palm plantations was in low criteria. Smallholder oil palm households were expected to understand and follow the standards set by ISPO, with the support from local governments and related agencies.

Abstract

The village area is a location far from the city which has many shortcomings, especially information technology communication. The best development and the fastest and most efficient way of developing information communication is to build from the bottom up at the village level. Every village in Indonesia must be independent and be able to develop themselves to obtain and share information. For this reason, the government has begun to implement a system of development and development from the outskirts or the lowest level, which is called the village and then to the urban area. To support this development, the government created the Smart Village information technology concept. The Smart Village concept has an agenda to strengthen rural management through the use of information and communication technology. In this regard, the Government continues to innovate and be creative to support the Smart Village program. Sei Lembu Makmur Village, Kampar Regency, Riau Province is a village located approximately 45 kilometers from the provincial capital. For this reason, information technology education and data communication through Smart Villages are needed so that village governments can develop Smart Villages independently and community leaders and agencies in the local village area can accept Smart Village development directly in the village.

Abstract

Water in tidal lowlands may either lack or excessive.  Neither lack nor excessive of water is demanded for crop cultivation.  Therefore, water management plays an important role in the development of tidal lowland agriculture through maintaining proper water conditions.  Since tidal lowland with certain conditions is considered marginal, its utilization for crop cultivation should maintain its fragile characteristics such that its utilization to support crop production can be sustained.  Continuing use of tidal lowlands for crop production, therefore, requires agricultural ecosystem management through the establishment and measurement of sustainability in water management. Sustainable water management in tidal lowlands for crop production should not only consider the physical resources (infrastructures), but also human resource as well as financial resource.  This paper proposes three agendas for research on water management as follows: (1) identification of specific local water infrastructure developments, (2) initiation of  participatory operation and maintenance of water infrastructures, (3) utilization of self-supporting financial means in water management.

Abstract

Gap existing in the landscape are partial practices on environment management and social programs from each of landscape stakeholders which cause cumulative duplication or incontinuity between programs. The objective of this research is to analyze production area role in the landscape environment management in South Sumatra particularly Musi Banyuasin and Banyuasin Districts. Using survey method and purposive sampling, 8 companies representatives are interviewed regarding current environment management system and the relation with external factors with landscape approach overview. The results: (1) Land-use planning should be in place prior the development of concession permit and concessions as implementer of provincial and national agendas on local investments; (2) Concession monitoring efforts could give input on the conformity towards the law enforcement in environment management which should be expressed through the year.; (3) Concessions ideally have the role as connector to community and protected areas, connecting to government programs, raising awareness as well as providing assistance in economic empowerment to the community, reducing dependency towards forests; (4) The report from wildlife and its habitat monitoring (buffer area) surrounding concession should also be shared with Environmental Agency (DLH), Forest Management Unit (KPH), National Park and Natural Resource Conservation Center (BKSDA) for potential or existing wildife corridors or ecosystem essentials area; (5) Concession could collaborate with conservation area as well as other governmental programs to maximize the impact and efficiency of the programs. Together with community and protected areas, concessions have significant area size and have the capacity and resources to also take part in the landscape management. Joint monitoring and programs would be tremendous achievement for the landscape approach.
