Abstract

Ternate is one of the cities in North Maluku, located right beneath Gamalama Mountain. Ternate was once a trade center in the 13th century and became a melting pot for people from different countries with different purposes. There were Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish with the aim of colonizing, and there were Arabian, Chinese, and locals outside Ternate, such as people from Halmahera, Sulawesi, Maluku, Sumatra, and Java, who came for trading. The arrival of these people contributes not only to language adaptation but also to place names known as toponymy. There are several relevant studies concerning toponymy in Indonesia, but they have yet to be done in Ternate. Hence, this research aims to: 1) analyze the morphological process of the villages naming in Ternate and 2) provide toponyms classification of the villages naming in Ternate. The primary data are taken from Ternate Dalam Angka, a statistical data from BPS Ternate, which contains 59 villages/sub-districts named in Ternate. The data was then analyzed and triangulated through in-depth interviews and literature studies. The data are presented both formally and informally. The analysis results show morphological processes concerning zero derivation, reduplication, compounding, abbreviation, back-formation, combination, borrowing, and phrases that occurred in the villages named in Ternate. The findings also attest to a theory proposed by George R. Stewart (2012) regarding toponymy classification of village naming in Ternate, in which there are descriptive, incident, possessive, commemorative, euphemistic, folk etymologies, manufactured, shift, mistake, descriptive + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, euphemistic + manufactured, and unknown.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the success of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on the improvement of TOEFL preparation listening score at UPT Bahasa Universitas Khairun students course. This research performed an experimental study with paired-sample t-test. The subjects in this study were 20 students. The sampling is through the cluster sampling method, in which samples taken are classes. The classes that are used as sample selection will later become the experimental group classes for the study purposes. This study uses two types of instruments, which are; pretest to measure participants' initial scores from the TOEFL listening preparation program and the posttest to measure the final scores of participants related to the success of applying PBL method. The data then analysed quantitatively by using the paired-sample t-test in SPSS IBM 25. The results show that the minimum score is increased by 1 point from Min1=31 to Min2=32. While the maximum score is increased by 4 points from Max1=61, to Max2=65. The findings attest that the PBL method applied on TOEFL listening preparation course conducted in Unkhair has been successfully improved students’ listening score.

Abstract

Abstract

Plagiarism is a pervasive and serious ethical issue that involves the unauthorized use or appropriation of someone else's ideas, words, or creative work without proper acknowledgment or permission. It is an act of intellectual dishonesty that undermines the principles of academic and professional integrity. The term encompasses various forms of misrepresentation, including copying and pasting text, paraphrasing without proper citation, and presenting someone else's work as one's own. Plagiarism can be a common issue in educational settings, and various factors contribute to its prevalence. Therefore, it is important to understand these factors, especially from students’ point of view in order to help teachers take proactive measures toward plagiarism effectively. Based on this case, the purpose of this study is to examine undergraduate students’ perspective on potential causes of plagiarism in academic writing through qualitative data collection methods. The data will be collected from students in the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Science, Universitas Khairun (Unkhair) through a series of interviews. Students selected for the interview are those who have previously taken a writing test in which their results contained plagiarism. The analysis includes several reasons on why students tend to plagiarize. These reasons are thus summarized in a form of ‘theme’, which is why; thematic analysis approach is used for analyzing the data. The main themes that emerge from the aforementioned problem are: poor awareness of plagiarism; poor academic writing skills; laziness behaviors; deadlines and pressures; teaching issues; lack of integrity, and; grade over knowledge. The study results show that the causes of plagiarism are varied, and the description provided by students are able to help developing a strategy against plagiarism so that students will be more cautious and prioritize their own original work and academic honesty. Abstract

Politeness is one of the basics in creating effective communication in public spaces. One of the public spaces that is quite often used when communicating is social media, one of which is Twitter. People, including politicians, often express their opinions on certain issues through Twitter. Ridwan Kamil expressed his opinion about the characteristics of Jakarta residents long before entering politics. The tweet received many negative responses from netizens because it was considered impolite. This study aims to analyze the pragmatic features of the tweet by identifying violations of the principle of politeness and discussing its effectiveness on political discourse and digital communication. The data used are Ridwan Kamil's tweets in 2011, which mention in detail the characteristics of Jakarta residents, which were reposted by the @txtdrjkt account. Data analysis uses a discourse analysis approach guided by the theory presented by Leech (1991). The results of the analysis show that through a single tweet, Ridwan Kamil also violates the maxims of tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement, and sympathy.

Abstract

Translation plays a vital role in bridging languages and cultures, and the rapid development of translation technologies has created new opportunities and challenges in translator education. This study aimed to explore students’ perspectives on how the use of technology improves their translation quality in university-level translation classes, with a focus on accuracy, fluency, and efficiency, while also examining the barriers students face. A qualitative research design was employed with purposive sampling of 46 students from two translation classes in the English Department of Universitas Khairun. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and student translation outputs, and analyzed thematically. Findings reveal that based on students’ experiences, technology enhances translation accuracy, fluency, and efficiency, although barriers such as inadequate training and over-reliance persist. The study recommends comprehensive technological integration into the curriculum, supported by appropriate pedagogical strategies. In conclusion, the research underscores that effective and reflective use of technology can transform translation education by cultivating digitally competent, autonomous, and critically engaged translators ready for the professional field.

Abstract

This study examines the pragmatic strategies through which Indonesian political figure Dedi Mulyadi constructs authority in his public communication. The significance of this research lies in highlighting how authority is enacted linguistically in Indonesian politics, where cultural values, humour, and symbolic expressions shape leadership discourse. The purpose of this article is to analyze how Dedi Mulyadi uses speech acts, politeness strategies, conversational implicatures, and code-mixing to project authority while sustaining solidarity with audiences. The analysis applies Speech Act Theory (Austin, 1975; Searle, 1969), Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987), and Grice’s (1975) theory of implicature. Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative design using pragmatic discourse analysis. Data were collected purposively from Dedi Mulyadi’s speeches, interviews, and informal talk shows retrieved from YouTube channels, news portals, and other online platforms in 2025. Transcriptions were coded to identify illocutionary acts, politeness strategies, and implicatures within cultural contexts. Findings reveal that Dedi Mulyadi combines assertiveness with inclusivity, frequently using directives and assertives framed through humour, cultural metaphors, and rural imagery. His code-mixing in Sundanese and Bahasa Indonesia strengthens local identification, while implicatures allow him to convey moral imperatives indirectly. Overall, these pragmatic strategies enable him to project power while simultaneously constructing an approachable, culturally grounded leadership persona.
