Abstract

The Nigerian education system continues to face numerous challenges, including limited access, poor educational quality, and inequalities in learning outcomes. These challenges necessitate effective policy reforms to enhance educational quality and achieve sustainable development goals. This study aims to examine the potential transformation of Nigeria's education system by drawing lessons from the success of educational policy reforms in Indonesia. The study employs a comparative analysis method by examining key elements of Indonesia's educational policies, their implementation strategies, and their impacts on educational outcomes. The analysis explores contextual similarities and differences between the two countries to identify best practices and transferable lessons for Nigeria. Data were gathered from various sources, including policy reports, academic studies, and official publications, and were qualitatively analyzed to provide in-depth insights. The findings reveal that Indonesia's educational policies, such as compulsory education programs, teacher quality improvement initiatives, and the strengthening of vocational education, have positively impacted both access to and quality of education. These practices can be adapted to Nigeria’s context to address similar challenges. However, the implementation of such policies in Nigeria requires adjustments to suit the country’s unique social, economic, and cultural conditions. In conclusion, this study emphasizes that well-directed and sustainable policy reforms can bring transformative changes to a country's education system.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide insight on how Self-regulated learning strategy is implemented in a classroom by presenting how three phases of the strategy; Forethought and Planning phase, Monitoring Performance phase, and Reflection on Performance phase; are shown in the lesson plan of Literal Reading Course at university level to support independent learning skill. This is a case study observing the lesson plan of Literal Reading course in a private university in Central Java, Indonesia. It shows the examples on how each phase of the strategy is realized in the lesson plan considering the aim of the phase which is mentioned to be important to help student become familiar with the course and prepare themselves before joining the sessions of the lecture. Integrating the phases in the lesson plan helps students to be more confident and motivated in joining the lecture since they know what they will face in advance instead of getting sudden materials from the lecturer. It can be inferred that the implementation of the strategy is considered complete by arranging a lesson plan that matches the phases of Self-regulated learning strategy to support the process of Literal Reading learning that is expected to guide students during the lecture.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of cultural factors on translation choices in English-language advertising texts. In today’s global marketplace, advertisements function not only as persuasive linguistic tools but also as cultural products that reflect and shape social values. Therefore, translating advertisements requires more than linguistic accuracy—it demands a deep understanding of both source and target cultures. Using a qualitative approach and drawing on theories such as dynamic equivalence and cultural translation, this research analyzes English advertisements and their translations across diverse cultural contexts. The analysis focuses on cultural dimensions such as communication context (high vs. low), individualism vs. collectivism, and power distance. The Findings indicate that cultural aspects such as phrases, humor, and a local symbol often can not be translated directly. Therefore, strategies like adaptation, localization, and cultural substitutions are used to keep the relevance and appeal of the message.  This research affirms that the translator's function as a cultural mediator who must consider both the meaning and the sensitivity of the target audience. This Study also emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and collaboration with cultural consultants or native speakers to guarantee the accuracy and cross-cultural respect. In conclusion, a balanced translation approach between faithfulness to the source message and cultural acceptance is highly important in the context of global communication.

Abstract

This study proposes a model of self-monitoring phase of Self-Regulated Learning using E-Portfolio in writing an essay. The method used was case study which aims to take an activity or phenomenon as an example. The E-Portfolio tool used was Wordpress.com. The proposed model covers ten stages begin with students making the E-Portfolio, stating their goals, taking notes exploring materials, taking notes on feedback given by the lecturer and peers, reviewing the feedback, performing self-evaluation, presenting the results of evaluation, discussing with peers about their difficulties, and asking and discussing with the lecturer about personal difficulties found during the process. To achieve the desired result from implementing E-Portfolio in Self-Monitoring phase of SRL, teacher/lecturer should consider several factors among others learning objective, participants, tool used, the outcome expected, and not to mention infrastructure available. Several challenges in implementing this strategy include the infrastructure such as internet connection and the hardware supports. In addition, students’ reluctancy to do the self-reflection phase due to self-distrust with their capability and skill or their skepticism towards the teacher/lecturer should be overcome with adequate guidance and frequent encouragement for the success of this strategy.

Abstract

The integration of the SRL strategy into instructional practices is motivated by the desire to nurture students' autonomy in learning, a trait that is increasingly emphasized in contemporary educational discourse. This study investigates the integration of the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) strategy into the instructional framework of an Interpretive Reading course. Given the emphasis on fostering students' learning independence inherent in the SRL strategy, it becomes crucial to ensure that instructional practices align with this objective, particularly within the context of a course designed for first-semester university students. The study adopts a case study approach within an Interpretive Reading class at a private university in Indonesia. Here, the focus is on evaluating the instructional strategies vis-à-vis the criteria delineated in each phase of the SRL strategy: Forethought and Planning, Monitoring of Performance, and Reflection on Performance. The findings reveal that the instructional interventions implemented by the lecturer predominantly meet the criteria established for each phase of the SRL strategy. These instructions serve as scaffolding mechanisms, guiding students towards developing their autonomy in learning processes. Furthermore, the study underscores the effectiveness of these instructions in enhancing students' interpretive reading skills. Consequently, the outcomes of this study hold implications for the integration of digital texts within the instructional context, suggesting their potential to further support and enhance student learning experiences in Interpretive Reading classrooms.

Abstract

The microlearning strategy aims to overcome the decrease in students' span of focus, presenting learning materials in small portions due to technology exposure. E-portfolio aims to support students’ needs of involving technology in learning progress while developing critical thinking skills. This study aims to present the learning activities in writing essays based on the principles of microlearning while utilizing e-portfolios and describes the students’ critical thinking skills involved. The research was conducted as a case study involving a research diary observing the learning activities and critical thinking, and interview questions to gather students’ perceptions on their experiences utilizing microlearning and e-portfolio. The data were collected by performing observation in an Academic Writing class involving 80 students, and note-taking while learning happened in the classroom. Ten students were selected as respondents for further interview, and the responses were analysed with the thematic analysis technique. The findings showed that students took numerous small steps, starting from exploring a topic, elaborating a paragraph, and revising an essay before finally producing an essay. The students showed positive perceptions of the use of microlearning strategy and e-portfolios, saying that both were enjoyable and flexible. Various critical thinking skills shown by students during the process of essay writing were open-mindedness, communication, problem-solving, creativity, and analysis. It is important to view students’ small process and ensure students’ deep understanding of a topic instead of focusing on the final results.
