Abstract

Literature is said to be the medium where author expresses his experience in life, especially on the relationship with the creator. This idea could be clearly seen in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Magicians Nephew where C.S. Lewis, the author, expresses Christian concepts, stories, and teaching he understands throughout his life. Those all are expressed through symbolism due to its capability in making association with human experience as well as conveying any complex ideas in a form of concrete objects which are easily understood by the readers. Keywords: expressive approach, symbol, Christianity

Abstract

Kata Kunci: kesepadanan makna, penerjemahan lirik lagu, “Pura-Pura Lupa”, “Pretend to Forget” ABSTRACT Translating song lyrics requires a special method because there are several limitations that a translator must pay attention to. Some things that must be considered by a translator in the process of translating song lyrics are maintaining the rhythm and the number of syllables and beats in each line of the lyrics. The method of translating poetry which emphasizes more on external factors can be used to overcome this problem, however this can cause other problems, including meaning equivalence. By using one of popular Indonesian songs, entitled “Pura-pura Lupa”, which is translated into “Pretend to Forget”, this paper intends to discuss the impact of the method of translating song lyrics on the meaning of the translation of the song lyrics. Genre Tranlation is applied in doing the analysis. Keywords: meaning equivalence, translating song lyrics, “Pura-Pura Lupa”, “Pretend to Forget”

Abstract

Abstract

Oral translation, commonly called interpreting, is a verbal communication activity involving two parties speaking different languages, assisted by an interpreter. One mode of interpreting is simultaneous interpreting in which an interpreter delivers a source language (SL) message into a target language (TL) message simultaneously as the speaker’s statement proceeds (Nolan 3). One specific kind of simultaneous interpreting is sight translation. It is a form interpreting a written SL message into a spoken TL message (Ginori&Scimone 18). Although the SL message is written, this does not lessen the constraints of doing this job because the simultaneousness of this activity still demands the interpreters’ ability in working using two languages at the same time, as well as having the skills required for an interpreter. What is meant by constraints is performance constraints (Pochhacker 19) as the result of time limitation, the demand for the interpreter’s promptness and the accuracy of message transferred. This paper intends to observe the constraints in performing sight translation. For that purpose, this paper is going to explain the constraints experienced by interpreters when they are carrying out sight translation tasks. Since Interpreting class is available as a subject given at the English Letters Department, Sanata Dharma University, the data were obtained from the students of an Interpreting class who were assigned to perform sight translation. To limit the scope of discussion, the sight translation observed has been focused on the oral translation of English written texts into Indonesian spoken interpretation.

Abstract

As a form of communication that evokes laughter, humor is seen as one of important aspects in building relationship with people. Linguists suggest that humor exists because there is noncooperative interaction among interlocutors resulting from not observing Cooperative Principle in the conversations. Related to that, this study aims to analyze humorous situations in a situation comedy entitled How I Met Your Mother Season 2, Episodes 1 to 5 which are created by violating and flouting the conversational maxims as the forms of not observing the Cooperative Principle. Keywords: humorous situation, cooperative principle, flouting, violation

Abstract

One of the requirements in order to produce equivalent translation is that the translation must sound natural for target language (TL) readers both lexically and grammatically. This naturalness can be obtained through the use of both lexical items and grammar familiar to the TL readers. However, naturalness in translation is not always easy to achieve. One of the causes is the difference in the way the source language (SL) and TL readers express a certain message in their languages. According to Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) this difference can be overcome by applying a translation method called modulation. Modulation is a method in which translators try to maintain naturalness by using various form the message done by changing the point of view. This procedure is usually chosen when translators find that literal translation would result in awkward or unnatural translation. Keywords: modulation, naturalness, equivalence

Abstract

Translation is reproducing equivalent message from a source language (SL) text into a target language (TL) text. This concept implies translators efforts to maintain message equivalence. On the other hand, the efforts may be hindered by cultural differences. In other words, cultural differences may cause problems in maintaining message equivalence in translation. A common problem found in translation is loss and gain of meaning. To overcome translation problems related to loss and gain of meaning as a result cultural differences, various translation procedures could be applied. Synonymy is one of many translation procedures commonly used. This procedure is applied when a translation is not the first literal translation of the SL text. This procedure is usually chosen when translators could not find the one-to-one substitute in the TL.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the reasons and solutions why and how Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs), need to increase their English proficiency. We use a sociolinguistic approach to understanding the phenomenon of English as a Global Language including its history, social functions, prestige, and why its speakers gain better social status in society. Furthermore, we discuss the data we gained from dispersing questionnaires for need analysis in google forms to some networks of Indonesian in Hong Kong (59 correspondents). The data doubtlessly show they want to enhance their English mastery and intend to join our free online English course program. In the second year of the program (2022), we become more convinced in conducting the program for a longer run in the future, as unexpectedly the number of IMWs who want to join the course has raised four times (about three hundred from the expected ninety participants only), and have gained supports from various institutions such as the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesian in Hong Kong and Macau, and Indonesian Diaspora Network Global. As an academic institution, we are assured that the present program will be a valuable contribution for society, especially the IMWs.
