Abstract

Abstract

Hibiscus rosa sinensis L. is widely used by the community to decorate the garden because of its splendor. In addition, Hibiscus flowers containing anthocyanin and flavonoids have antioxidants, which function as antioxidants against free radicals. This natural dye can be obtained by extracting Hibiscus flowers through maceration using 96% ethanol. In this research, Hibiscus flowers were obtained from Sendang Rejo Village, Lamongan Regency. In the extract process, the Hibiscus flower’s petals were blended until smooth, then added to 96% ethanol (1 liter) and stirred for 30 minutes. Filtrate results were taken, placed in a porcelain dish, and put in an oven at 60 °C for a day. Four formulas were made with varying levels of Hibiscus flower extract: F1 (0%), F2 (2%), F3 (4%), and F4 (6%). Physical evaluation included organoleptic, homogeneity, dispersibility, pH, and qualitative tests for the identification of anthocyanins. The results of the organoleptic, homogeneity, dispersion, pH, and identification of anthocyanins evaluations were then analyzed descriptively. The data from the organoleptic test indicated that F1 had an odorless white color, while F2, F3, and F4 had a red and white color with a distinctive Hibiscus flower aroma. The homogeneity test revealed that while F1 had good homogeneity, F2, F3, and F4 were not homogeneous (heterogeneous). The spreadability test on the four formulas did not fall within the range of requirements, namely 5-7 cm, with an average value of 3.53, but this was related to several significant reasons. In addition, the pH test results matched the requirements for topical preparations, namely 4.5–6.5, with an average value of 5.075. In conclusion, Hibiscus flower extract obtained through the maceration method with 96% ethanol could not give a homogeneous red color from the anthocyanin substance. Physical evaluation and anthocyanin identification tests also obtained good results.

Abstract

Background: In 2023, Dengue Fever cases in Indonesia reached 35,694 cases from January to May. Dengue Fever is caused by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Mosquito control efforts have been widely conducted, including the use of chemical insecticides. The use of chemical insecticides can lead to environmental contamination and cause skin irritation. An alternative approach that can be taken is to use natural insecticides. One of the natural insecticides that can be used as a repellent is citronella and basil essential oils. Citronella and basil essential oils contain geraniol and citronellal, which can cause mortality in mosquitoes. This study intends to evaluate the effectiveness of a spray mixture of basil leaves and citronella essential oil as a mosquito repellent. Materials and Methods: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, basil leaf essential oil, citronella essential oil, propylene glycol, glycerin, butylated hydroxytoluena and etanol 96% v/v. Subsequently, an evaluation of physical properties was conducted, including organoleptic testing, pH, and viscosity evaluation, as well as irritation and repellent activity test. Results: The spray formulations in the control and F1 are clear in color, while F2 and F3 are clear with a slightly yellowish hue. The scent produced has the characteristic smell of citronella. The pH and viscosity tests resulted in pH values consistent with the skin's pH range of 4.5-7 and viscosity within the range of 1-1000 Cp. The spray formulation did not irritate after 48 hours of observation. The results of the effectiveness test indicate that F2 can protect against mosquito bites for 1 hour, while F3 can protect for 3 hours. Conclusion: Citronella essential oil and basil leaves are effective as a repellent for the Aedes aegypti mosquito for 3 hours of use in concentration 15%.

Abstract

Acne is a skin condition that is often discussed, especially among teenagers, because of its potential to damage self-confidence. The use of cosmetics that contain anti-acne active compounds from natural ingredients, such as tea tree oil, is one of the effective acne treatments. Tea tree oil is an essential oil that has hydrophobic and lipophilic properties. So, a good conveyor system such as SNEDDS is needed. The SNEDDS tea tree oil gel preparation in this study aims to assess the potential inhibition of the preparation against staphylococcus epidermidis, a type of acne-causing bacteria. The data analysis in this study uses descriptive methods, such as homogeneity test, organoleptic test, pH test, dispersion test, viscosity test, stability test, and antibacterial test. Antibacterial activity data is data obtained in the form of the diameter of the obstacle area and measured using a caliper. The results of the antibacterial activity test against staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria are as follows: positive control (Clindamycin) has an inhibition of 32.26 mm, F1 (SNEDDS tea tree oil 0% gel) does not inhibit, and F2 (SNEDDS tea tree oil 20% gel) has an inhibition of 24.44 mm. Thus, it can be concluded that SNEDDS tea tree oil gel has the ability to inhibit bacteria in the very strong category (>10mm).

Abstract

One of the export commodities from the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) group is tengkawang fruit. This fruit can be processed into fat which has properties similar to cocoa butter. The advantage of this fat compared to cocoa butter is that the price is relatively cheaper. However, the use of tengkawang fat in cosmetics is not widely known. Therefore, researchers are interested in developing cosmetic products based on tengkawang fat to treat xerosis of the feet. To increase occlusivity, tengkawang fat is formulated into an NLC (Nanostructured Lipid Carriers) system. In this research, a foot sleeping mask product was made containing NLC tengkawang fat with the addition of gel (to improve viscosity) and sweet orange oil (to improve aroma). The aim of this research was to determine the irritation skin level and effectiveness of moisturizing the skin of the soles of the feet from a foot sleeping mask containing NLC tengkawang fat. The results of the physical characteristics test show that the foot sleeping mask made meets the desired specifications. The results of skin irritation tests with 35 panelists showed that there was no redness or edema on the panelists' skin during 24, 48 and 72 hours of observation.
