Abstract

Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) consumption can tends the risk of health diseases such as obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2, and the risk of cardiovascular disease. One factor that contributes to increasing frequencies of SSBs consumption is individual knowledge. Nutrition knowledge is considered a determinant in decision-making for individual eating behavior or habits. The aim of study was to analyze the relationship between knowledge and the frequency of consumption of SSBs in adult. This study was a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional research design and analyzed data from 158 respondents aged 19-29 years in Kepulauan Riau. Data collection consisted of knowledge about SSBs and the frequency of consumption of SSBs using by Google form. The collected data were analyzed using Spearman's rank test to examine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between knowledge and the frequency of consumption of SSBs (p = 0.756). Respondents with good knowledge with a frequency of rarely consuming SSBs are 74 respondents (50.3%), but respondents with good knowledge also had a habit of consuming SSBs frequently are 73 respondents (49.7%). However, further research is needed to identify other determinants that influence SSBs consumption.

Abstract

Overnutrition remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, with increasing prevalence among young adults. Fast food consumption, characterized by high fat and low nutrient content, has been associated with various behavioral and environmental determinants, including media exposure. This study aimed to analyze the association between fast food–related media exposure and consumption frequency among young adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 158 individuals aged 19–29 years in Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia, using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a structured electronic questionnaire assessing media exposure and frequency of fast food consumption. Statistical analysis was performed using Spearman’s rank correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents were highly influenced in fast food–related media exposure (68.4%) and reported frequently in fast food consumption frequency (51.9%). However, no significant correlation was found between media exposure and consumption frequency (p = 0.296), with a very weak positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.084). These findings suggest that media exposure alone is not a strong determinant of fast food consumption behavior. Other factors such as individual preferences, social influences, and environmental conditions may play a more substantial role. Future interventions should adopt a multifactorial approach by addressing not only media exposure but also individual, social, and environmental determinants of dietary behavior. Strengthening nutrition education and improving healthy food accessibility are essential to reduce fast food consumption among young adults.

Abstract

Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM) reported that 20.62% of identified food product labels did not meet the provisions. This results in low compliance with reading information labels and nutritional composition among the public. Low compliance with reading information and nutritional labels can occur due to disinterest in information resulting in poor understanding of food product labels. This study aims to analyze the relationship between attitudes towards health and food product labels with compliance with reading food product labels. This research involved 47 students of the undergraduate nutrition study program. Data on attitudes towards health and nutritional labels were obtained using a respondent agreement level form. Data on label reading compliance was obtained from questionnaire. The chi square test is used to analyze the relationship between variables. The research results showed that the majority of respondents (63.8%) had a positive attitude regarding the level of approval of health and food product labels. There is no significant relationship between attitudes towards health and food product labels and compliance with reading nutritional value information labels (p=0.330). Nutrition students are expected to increase their positive attitude towards reading nutritional value information labels through education or practice reading food labels.
