Abstract

The interpretation differences of the policies implemented by the Second Vatican Council have a significant influence on the increasingly diverse views and manifestations of the sacred expressions in the Catholic Church. Therefore, this research focuses on the sacred expression of the Sanctuary as the most important space of the Catholic Church. It was carried out at St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung because it applies various artificial lighting techniques to its worship space. Furthermore, this research discusses how and to what extent artificial lighting techniques are able to support the sacred expression of the contemporary Catholic Church Sanctuary. Data were quantitatively collected through working drawings, measuring the illumination level in the work area, and determining the brightness of space-forming materials. Meanwhile, data were also qualitatively collected through field observations and visual recordings. The analysis process was used to analyze the architectural sacredness, such as orientation, hierarchy, balance, and symbols. In addition, visual analysis was used for clarity, uniformity, balance, brightness, and spatial intimacy. The results showed that artificial lighting techniques play a significant role in forming sacred expressions of the Sanctuary of the St. Laurentius Catholic Church Bandung.

Abstract

During the pandemic in early 2022, some Muslim congregants chose to close ranks while others kept their distance during prayers and non-ritual activities. Therefore, the aim of this research is to determine the behavior patterns of congregants during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically at the Great Mosque of Al-Ukhuwwah-Bandung in West Java. The method used involves (1) mapping techniques to observe the congregants' behavior, (2) distributing questionnaires to validate their comfort level with interpersonal space and adherence to health protocols, (3) analyzing the questionnaire results, and (4) drawing conclusions based on the observed behavior patterns and questionnaire analysis results. The research shows that during the Omicron period, the congregants tended to revert to their pre-pandemic behavior patterns, with intimate and personal distance being dominant during ritual and non-ritual activities, respectively. However, the questionnaire results suggest that congregants still adhere to social distancing protocols during activities in the mosque, despite implementing health protocols.

Abstract

The Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Religion reports more than 700,000 mosques in the country. Insufficient research has been conducted concerning this mosque-turned-building, particularly regarding how it may help the country accomplish its environmental commitments. The Istiqlal mosque received a green building assessment certificate (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency) from the International Finance Corporation in April 2022. This certificate should serve as a foundation for future research into the distinctive features of mosque building designs in Indonesia and their potential to contribute to accomplishing national environmental targets. Mosque buildings as an embodiment of the concept of Rahmatan Lil Alamin or mercy for all of nature should be in line with the concept of green buildings which strive to preserve nature. This research aims to determine the challenges of implementing the green building concept in mosque buildings with a case study of two mosques in the city of Bandung. To identify their traits, this study employed observational methods, case studies, and interviews with mosque managers. The Minister of Public Works Regulation Number 21 of 2021 about Green Building Performance Assessment will be employed to examine and assess the gathered data. The outcomes demonstrate that the low-performance value persists. Considerable work is required to achieve the desired results. In-depth talks with stakeholders are also required to map the distinctive qualities of mosque structures and identify methods in which they can support the realization of national environmental preservation objectives while also exemplifying the principles of Rahmatan lil Alamin.

Abstract

Reformed Christianity is one of the Protestant denominational branches in Indonesia. The Reformed tradition exhibits distinct theological and liturgical characteristics compared to other Christian denominations. Consequently, architectural design must accommodate Reformed theological concepts while supporting its liturgical practices and doctrinal views. Although Reformed churches share a unified theological belief, their architectural forms vary significantly, influencing the sacred atmosphere within these spaces. In 2024, the Gereja Reformed Injili Indonesia (GRII) in Bandung inaugurated a new church building. Preliminary observations indicate that this church's architectural design diverges from typical Reformed churches, impacting the spatial ambiance. This study focuses on the relationship between the sacred atmosphere and the architectural design of Reformed churches, specifically examining the new GRII Bandung church. The research investigates the connection between the sacred ambiance and the architectural design of the GRII Bandung church. It seeks to provide insights for the academic community, contributing to theories and concepts related to church architecture in general and Reformed church architecture in particular. The findings are anticipated to offer alternative design approaches for Reformed churches and provide valuable input for church management policies. Ultimately, this study aims to lay the groundwork for more comprehensive future research in this area.
