Abstract

This article aims to describe children's literature as a means of learning language skills for children. Children's literature is literature aimed at children. Children's literature is literature that reflects the feelings and experiences of children through children's views on topics that are close to the child's world, including humans, fauna, and flora. Through literature, a child indirectly learns language skills as well. Children's literature is also important because it teaches young learners a variety of lessons. It also gives them opportunities to engage with literature; teaches them an appreciation for their cultural heritage; fosters emotional intelligence and creativity; fosters the growth and development of the children’s personality and social skills; and conveys important literature from one generation to the next. Children's literature needs to be developed and taught from an early age so that young learners have good personalities and are knowledgeable. It can be a valuable resource, particularly in language teaching. Learning language skills is applied through the introduction of three literary genres, namely: 1) poetry in the form of children's songlines and children's rhymes; 2) prose in the form of fantasy fairy tales and folk tales; and 3) drama in the form of stories with simple dialogues.

Abstract

This paper aims to improve students' listening comprehension by implementing a structured instructional program that emphasizes three critical elements: Listening for Gist, Inferring Meaning, and Detecting Signposts. The primary goal is to identify educational strategies that are effective and can significantly enhance students' academic performance and listening abilities. The study addresses a significant gap in previous research by offering a comprehensive framework that integrates multiple aspects of listening comprehension, thereby contributing to the existing literature. This framework often isolates these skills. The program aims to enhance students' listening scores and cultivate a more profound comprehension of spoken language by implementing a targeted approach. The research utilizes a classroom action research design involving a cohort of 40 students who participated in three distinct instruction cycles. Each cycle focused on A specific listening component, which involved using a combination of active listening techniques, contextual exercises, and signpost identification activities. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the instructional strategies and the progression of the students, pre-and post-test assessments were implemented. In all three cycles, the results show substantial improvements, with average scores increasing from 60 to 75 in Listening for Gist, 65 to 82 in Inferring Meaning, and 70 to 88 in Detecting Signposts. These results indicate that the targeted interventions were effective in improving students' listening skills, as numerous students demonstrated a significant improvement in their ability to understand spoken texts. This research has implications for both educational practice and future research. The results emphasize the significance of a multifaceted approach to listening instruction, which motivates educators to implement comparable frameworks in their instruction. Furthermore, additional research could investigate the long-term implications of these instructional strategies on listening proficiency and their generalisability in various educational settings.

Abstract

Learning materials are important components of the language teaching and learning process, including the writing course. To develop writing learning materials, particularly for higher education, it is crucial to identify the students’ writing needs. As the initial step in developing learning materials to support teaching writing, this study aims to investigate undergraduate students' current abilities and needs, as well as the appropriate ICT tools. The study for needs assessments was responded by 184 English department students from various Indonesian universities and six of them were interviewed. The findings indicated that students of various capacities have the desire to acquire knowledge and improve their writing skills. The results highlight the undergraduate students' learning experiences and insufficient writing abilities, with problematic areas in grammar and the organization of ideas, as well as challenges in writing independently during the learning process. In addition, teachers should either have or improve their pedagogical expertise and be adaptive to the evolution of information and technology to fulfill the needs indicated by students. Further study is needed to take the next step toward developing and providing learning materials with a range of activities, assignments, assessments, and applications to excite students' interest and engagement in the writing course.
