Abstract

This study examines the practice of tithing in GMIM Imanuel Toraget Congregation, Langowan Dua District, from a practical theology perspective and the factors influencing congregational awareness in giving offerings. The main issue identified is the low level of understanding among church members regarding tithing, influenced by limited church teachings, the perception of tithing as a financial burden, and economic factors. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the congregation’s limited theological understanding and lack of church education contribute to the low practice of tithing. To enhance awareness, the church needs to strengthen practical theological education, develop a more systematic church policy, and provide economic support that enables members to give joyfully

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines the role of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in shaping the spiritual character of Generation Alpha, who live amidst the rapid advancement of digital technology and the fast-paced culture driven by social media. These changes present serious challenges to spiritual formation, as faith-based values are often marginalized by pragmatic, instant, and individualistic lifestyles. The purpose of this study is to explain how CRE can serve as a strategic means of developing the spiritual character of Generation Alpha, grounded in a strong faith foundation, equipped with critical thinking skills, and capable of applying Christian values in a relevant way within a changing era. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a practical-theological analysis, utilizing literature studies from various theological and Christian educational sources that support the understanding of faith character formation in the digital age. The findings reveal that CRE plays a central role in instilling faith values through contextual approaches, the use of interactive digital media, and the exemplary modeling of teachers and parents. The formation of spiritual character through CRE represents the realization of Christ’s Great Commission in making disciples and nurturing living faith values. This underscores the importance of practical strategies in educating and fostering the spirituality of Generation Alpha. The article highlights the adaptation and innovation of Christian Religious Education (PAK) that are relevant, creative, and contextual for nurturing the spiritual development of today’s digital generation. Abstract

Abstract

This paper focuses on the praxis of simplicity among Minahasan affiliates of the Christian Evangelical Church in Minahasa (GMIM) as a spirituality that opposes consumeristic religion. A qualitative case study design was employed to gather data in the form of in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of documents using purposely chosen congregants who always engage in simple living in family, ministry, and everyday life. Data were interpreted using thematic analysis, which was informed by the theological-hermeneutical framework. The results indicate that simplicity is not considered an absence but a planned, religious lifestyle of sufficiency, gratitude, humility, and reliance on God’s providence. In practical terms, the concept of simplicity is reflected in judicious handling of finances, low-profile consumption, non-competitive involvement in worship, and judicious use of social media. Congregants define this way of life as a protest against consumerist ideas such as extravagance, flaunting, and spiritual arrogance, which are becoming more pronounced in church activities and general society. This opposition is anchored in the merging of Minahasan cultural norms, particularly mapalus (mutual help) and the GMIM ethos of love, service, and modesty. This study concludes that the praxis of simplicity among GMIM congregants is a situational spirituality of resistance that protects and revitalizes the church’s theological identity. It provides pastoral implications for faith formation, leadership, and ecclesial practices that are useful in enabling congregants to resist religious consumerism while being involved in modern social life in the plural context of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions, attitudes, and responses of the congregation of GMIM Golgota Bukit Ranomuut Permai toward mental health issues, as well as to identify the theological, social, and cultural factors shaping those responses. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques, the research involved 26 participants drawn from church ministers (Pelsus), youths, and general congregants, selected through an open online questionnaire. The data were analyzed thematically and validated through source triangulation. The findings indicate that 96.2% of respondents had previously heard about mental health issues, reflecting a high level of awareness. However, 65.4% reported having experienced stress, anxiety, or depression in recent months, even though access to professional services remains hindered by limited knowledge (12 mentions) and fear of social stigma (8 mentions). Although 65.4% of respondents were aware of the existence of mental health services, one-third still lacked understanding of how to access them. Suggested interventions from the congregation include routine educational programs in the church, the provision of free consultations, the establishment of support groups, the cultivation of a listening culture, and structured spiritual accompaniment. The study reveals a gap between awareness and action, influenced by religious stigma and limited information. It recommends integrating mental health literacy into pastoral ministry, establishing a pastoral referral system, and fostering collaboration between the church and professional practitioners. The church is positioned as an agent of social transformation capable of providing a safe space for holistic healing—physical, psychological, and spiritual—within the framework of a theology of shalom. This research offers practical contributions to the development of contextual pastoral care and enriches academic discourse on the intersection of religion, culture, and mental health in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract Ecclesial fellowship in GMIM Filadelfia Wawontulap has ceased being a ritualized liturgy to a crucial place of creating genuine relationships, solving conflicts, and the assimilation of Biblical values and Minahasan culture. Through descriptive-interpretative qualitative research approach, the study analyzes the role of fellowship as a merging and healing process among church members and uses five themes namely, the strengthening of social-spiritual relationships, the church as a reconciler, the leadership of pastors and elders, the integration of mapalus in koinonia, and the means of increasing participation and belonging. Results indicate that social bonding among fellowship activities at the column, commission, and categorical levels, generational relational gaps, and helpful mutual support between generations, be it at the hospital visit or a common meal. The church plays an active role in mediating conflicts in an all-inclusive pastoral ministry which involves prayer, open dialogue, and personal accompaniment. Although pastors and elders are appreciated as spiritual advisors, members want more personal contact and less formality to help bring openness, particularly among young people and those who are shy. The Minahasan cultural ethics, especially of mapalus (mutual cooperation), are highly effective social capital, and support equality, solidarity, and togetherness, which is similar to New Testament koinonia. Some of the best approaches to promote participation are informal intergenerational events, youth participation with planning the events, frequent visits to the aged and non-judgmental area where the youth can share their personal plight.

Abstract

Abstract This article describes family prayer traditions as practiced in the GMIM Eben Haezer Kaaten congregation as a place of spiritual growth, cultural inculturation, and pastoral care. Based on a qualitative and participatory ethnographic design comprising 15 nuclear families, in-depth interviews, participant observation, and the use of supporting documentation, this study examines how family prayer has been structured, organised, and experienced in the day-to-day life of Minahasan Christian families. The results demonstrate that family prayer has continued to be actively incorporated into the daily life of the family, particularly in the evenings or at mealtimes or even during crises, in such a way that the home is an ecclesia domestica where faith is recounted and passed down through generations. Prayer leadership is shared in differentiated forms: fathers are expected to be the spiritual heads, mothers to be consistent guardians, and children to be emerging leaders who are given responsibilities. The study also indicates that Minahasan cultural values, including mapalus, walewangko, and masarang, inform the sense of prayer and the dynamics of relations, which is transformed into a place of thankfulness, vulnerability, and solidarity. Meanwhile, the study notes that there are strong stressors, including work exhaustion, school pressure, information-related disruptions, and relationship stressors, that jeopardise the status quo of this tradition. The study finds that the reinforcement of family prayer must be carried out through purposeful pastoral accompaniment, ecclesial practices, and theological understanding of domestic spirituality as a location of Christian witness in modern Minahasa.

Abstract

This study examines the role of music in the worship of Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) as a locus where liturgy, spirituality, and cultural identity intersect. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with worship leaders, music ministers, and congregants, and an analysis of liturgical documents and song repertoires. The thematic analysis identified three major findings. First, GMIM worship is characterised by a dynamic interplay between contemporary Christian music, hymns, and traditional Minahasan forms, which together structure the liturgical flow from joyful praise to prayerful contemplation. Second, music functions as a primary medium of spiritual experience, helping congregants focus on God, articulate complex emotions, and internalise theological themes, while also revealing the risks of distraction when musical practices become performance-centred or misaligned with the liturgy. Third, congregational participation is shaped by the leadership of worship leaders and musicians, whose technical competence, spiritual maturity, and cultural sensitivity facilitate intergenerational engagement, despite differing musical preferences. The study concludes that music in GMIM worship is not a peripheral ornament but a vital aspect of pastoral ministry, theological formation, and inculturation. It recommends training for music ministers, intentional integration of traditional and contemporary repertoires, and participatory worship planning to ensure that GMIM worship remains contextually rooted and responsive to contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This paper reinvents the idea of public theology within the Indonesian context by developing friendship as a relational, epistemic, and praxis-based category instead of defining public theology as institutional speech, commentary of policy, or moral intervention. The research begins at a threefold distance. To begin with, influential public theology scholarship has eloquently elucidated the public work of theology, but has favored discourse, civil society, and institutional ethics to thick descriptions of interpersonal relationality. Second, the recent discussions in Indonesia have fruitfully engaged friendship as a leading grammar of public theological engagement across religious difference but have failed to develop friendship as a leading grammar of nationalism, polarization, religious moderation, and contextual theology. Third, the readings of John 4 have frequently been focused on mission, gender or interfaith dialogue, but have seldom been incorporated into a constructive model of public theology in plural societies. The article has a qualitative, constructive theological design, which implies the combination of literature-based analysis of the key debates in the field of public theology and contextual theology with the contextual hermeneutical analysis of the text of John 4:5-26, with reference to John 4:42 where necessary. This article posits that friendship must be conceptualized in three interrelated ways, as relational epistemology, that friendship imparts humility, reciprocity and solidarity; and as public praxis, that friendship establishes joint spaces and collaborative working areas without obliterating theological difference. It is argued that an effective Indonesian public theology should transcend a thin politics of tolerance to a thicker form of friendship that is dialogical, cross-boundary and publicly accountable. By doing this, the article adds to the transferable framework of global public theology in plural societies but is still grounded in Indonesian realities.
