Abstract

This article examines Raja Ali Haji's thoughts on Islamic leadership based on da'wah ethics by highlighting his works, such as Gurindam Dua Belas, Thamarāt al-Muhimmah, and Tuhfat al-Nafis. Through a historical approach and textual analysis, this article explores how values such as reason, knowledge, politeness, exemplary, and deliberation are basic principles in building an ethical, communicative, and spiritual leadership model. The article finds that the ethics of da'wah, according to Raja Ali Haji is not only individual and normative but also has a strong socio-political dimension, which is in line with the theory of political da'wah and the concept of civil Islam in the contemporary context. Raja Ali Haji's thinking can be used as a normative and pedagogical framework in the formation of Muslim leaders who are responsive to the times, fair in policy, and communicative in dealing with the plurality of society. The article also highlights the challenges in realizing civilized da'wah in the era of social media and populist politics and recommends integrating da'wah ethical values into education and public leadership practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article examines Adeeb Khalid’s Islam after Communism: Religion and Politics in Central Asia as a theoretical contribution to the study of religion and politics, rather than merely a regional account of post-Soviet Islam. Challenging dominant narratives of Islamic revival and radicalization, Khalid emphasizes the importance of historicizing Islam by foregrounding the legacies of Soviet secularism and postsocialist governance. Through a qualitative and interpretive reading of Khalid’s work, this article argues that Islam in Central Asia has been reconfigured as national heritage, bureaucratized through state control, and securitized within authoritarian political frameworks. These processes have reshaped Muslim subjectivities and politicized everyday religious practices from above, driven largely by state anxiety rather than popular mobilization. By highlighting continuity rather than rupture in state–religion relations, the article complicates liberal assumptions about secularization and religious freedom in post-authoritarian contexts. It concludes that Khalid’s insistence on historicity offers a transferable analytical framework for understanding religion in post-imperial and postsocialist societies beyond Central Asia.

Abstract

This study examines the informal listening habits of EFL students in Indonesia through the lens of digital literacy. Employing a descriptive quantitative survey method with 156 students from various academic programs, it investigates the types of content selected, underlying motivations, self-regulation strategies, and perceived affective impacts. The findings reveal that music, YouTube vlogs, and podcasts are the most frequently consumed content, primarily accessed via YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok. Content selection is driven by personal interest, entertainment, and convenience, consistent with Uses and Gratifications theory. From a digital literacy perspective, students are not merely passive consumers but active agents negotiating their linguistic identities through engagement with global content. The study concludes that informal listening is not simply a recreational activity but an integral component of the language learning ecosystem in the digital age. A key practical implication is the need to integrate informal listening practices into English language learning in Indonesia to make the curriculum more relevant to the realities of the digital generation living within a global media ecosystem.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of qadar (Predestination) in the Prophet Muhammad’s hadiths, focusing on the theological relationship between faith, human effort, and God’s determination. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach through library research, this paper examines canonical hadith collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, and Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Employing a maudhū‘i (thematic) method, the study identifies and analyzes hadiths that articulate the dynamic balance between divine will and human agency. The findings reveal that the Prophet’s hadiths on destiny do not deny human freedom to act but instead integrate human effort as an intrinsic part of God’s decree. From a classical theological perspective, the Asy‘ari and Maturidi concepts of kasb and ikhtiyar highlight the harmony between divine omnipotence and human moral responsibility. Meanwhile, modern contextual theology—as represented by Fazlur Rahman, M. Quraish Shihab, and Khaled Abou El-Fadl—reinterprets the hadiths ethically, positioning faith in divine decree as a source of spiritual resilience and proactive engagement with life. Consequently, the study concludes that the Prophet’s teaching on qadar represents a theology of balance—affirming that true faith inspires active spirituality and moral responsibility amid the complexities of modern existence
