Abstract

English for Specific Purpose (ESP) instruction in vocational schools necessitates the use of English materials that are tailored to the students' particular requirements. However, the English materials currently available for vocational institutions lack an adequate needs analysis. In order to address this issue, the purpose of this study is to determine the requirements of students in the computer and network engineering department for procedure text teaching materials. Eleventh-grade students majoring in computer and network engineering were selected by simple random sampling and surveyed for the study. The results indicated that the primary objective of the students' explanation-based learning process was to enhance their speaking skills. In addition, instructors favoured interactive, engaging, and simple-to-understand multimedia learning to teach English. This research can be used as a guide for designing English language instructional materials that meet the requirements of vocational students, especially those majoring in computer and network engineering.

Abstract

Learning English for Specific Purpose (ESP) for vocational students, is very important so that certain ways are needed to encourage students' needs. Students must receive sufficient material in certain ways based on their interests and majors. This study aims to analyze learning needs of tourism guide materials. The method used in this study is qualitative and quantitative research design where the data is collected with numerical form then described in the form of a description. The research instruments used in this study are questionnaires and open-ended interviews. This study conducts a needs analysis to measure student needs and to develop ESP materials. The participants of this research are 3rd and 4th semester students majoring in D3 Vocational Department UNMER Malang. The results of the study indicate the needs of students to improve their English-speaking skills and develop Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) as tourism guiding materials. Furthermore, students' English skills also show low results which lead to low self-confidence because the learning methods used by lecturers have not developed due to the application of teacher-centered classes which lead to a lack of practice from students. Therefore, learning methods that are able to stimulate students’ speaking proficiency and CCU material development are needed.

Abstract

Teaching procedural texts in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) can be challenging, often viewed as abstract and unrelated to real-world applications, especially in niche sectors like fashion design. This can hinder English language skill development within such industries. Addressing this, our study evaluates the effectiveness of demonstrations in teaching ESP procedural texts, specifically the crafting of scrunchies. Using a descriptive qualitative method, we identify the merits of demonstrations. Our results show that students not only understand but can also apply the procedural knowledge effectively, as evidenced by their successful creation of scrunchies. Enhanced engagement and participation levels during the learning process further validate the efficacy of the demonstration approach. These insights are pivotal for educators looking to refine their teaching techniques in ESP scenarios that require a balance between theoretical grasp and practical execution.

Abstract

Teaching English within the culinary arts is challenging for many instructors. The field of culinary arts has its specialized terminology and distinct context, which sets it apart from general English teaching. In light of this, the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program was introduced. ESP is designed to align English instruction with the specific needs of students in culinary studies, ensuring they are prepared academically and for their future roles in the industry. This research examines the effectiveness of student conferences in teaching descriptive texts, an essential aspect of culinary studies. Data collection involved interviews, classroom observations, and document reviews. The results were encouraging: student conferences emerged as a potent tool, leading to significant improvements in students' writing and comprehension abilities. When combined with the ESP approach, there was a notable increase in student motivation and engagement. These findings offer educators enhanced strategies for specialized English teaching in the culinary arts. Moreover, this study serves as a stepping stone for further research, aiming to refine English instruction in specialized domains.

Abstract

Encounter the changing needs of students in the 21st century of teaching and learning, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers have to pursue professional development. EFL Teachers have to do this by assessing and reexamining their teaching preparation and practices. This study aimed to initiate a formulaic design to increase TPD for 21st-century teaching. The data were obtained through the open-form questionnaire with 20 English teachers, as well as through the unstructured interview. It was found that teachers still face difficulties dealing with 21st-century skills and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Integration. Dual-mode of TPD could give a contribution as part of the training that is conducted in conventional ways, and the rest is delivered through the e-learning programs. A dual-mode TPD program as an initial model of TPD can be conducted both in conventional ways and through e-learning programs because it is the benefit to educate larger numbers of EFL teachers and more economically.

Abstract

This article discusses the application of short videos and pictures in teaching ESP procedure texts in computer and network engineering majors. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study design to explore the integration of video and pictures in ESP teaching, the challenges teachers face in integrating videos and pictures in ESP teaching, and how teachers overcome these challenges. The participants of this study consisted of one English teacher in computer and network engineering class who was selected by purposive sampling. The research was conducted at SMK Mahardika Malang and involved English teachers from the computer and network engineering department. Data collection methods included observation and interviews with teachers, focusing on the procedures for integrating short videos and pictures, the challenges faced, and solutions to overcome these challenges. The findings reveal that there are several activities in the classroom, namely teacher activities, student activities, and the learning and teaching process. Teachers face three challenges. The first is time constraints. To overcome this challenge, teachers must use pictures and short videos wisely and adjust them to the time available in the lesson plan. The second is the mismatch of learning material sources. The solution to this challenge is to use effective multimedia such as the Internet and YouTube. The third is students' low motivation to learn English and write procedural texts. The solution to this challenge is for teachers to approach students emotionally, consult with their parents, and provide project-based learning strategies using English. This research provides valuable insights for ESP education, emphasizing the importance of adapting content to industry needs, addressing motivation issues, and effectively using multimedia elements.
