Abstract

This current paper brings into discussion cultural meaningfulness on intercultural perspective of English learning materials for elementary school. Students might be perceived to master English, but there has been no guarantee that they can properly make use of their acquired language skills upon direct interaction with native speakers of the target language. This is reasonable as English instruction in elementary school is projecting grammatical aspects, not touching cultural aspects of the target language yet. In fact, those cultural aspects are playing pivotal roles in achieving interactional comprehension between speakers and interlocutors. In regards to cultural studies, foreign language students are to be apt to target language’s cultures. Departing for the mentioned concerns, English is to be taught by incorporating cultural aspects of native speakers, and thus intercultural perspective. This current paper pinpoints the development of intercultural perspective in English learning materials for elementary school students aging from 6-12 years old. Cultural meaningfulness on intercultural perspective is set to be the target that encapsulates various topics for teaching English in elemenatry school. The so called perspective not merely comprises social skills, but training sensitivity and comprehension on values, point of view, proper way of life and thinking as well. A number of materials containing intercultural perspective and cultural meaningfulness are described in this paper. Those materials are presented within six intercultural topics in the forms of culture-related vocabularies, expressions, and meanings.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the standards for social and personality competencies, identify the most critical personality variables, determine the indicators of these variables influencing teacher performance, and explore teachers' perspectives on these issues. A cross-sectional survey involving 165 middle school teachers from various regions in Indonesia was conducted. The survey data were triangulated through interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) for deeper insights. Data analysis was performed using Smart-PLS 3, with findings visualized through regression and composite models. The findings highlight key competency standards, including effective, empathetic, and polite communication with educators (impact value: 0.180) and a wise personality (impact value: 0.128). The most significant personality variable identified was a teacher's sense of true life calling, showing a negative relationship with teaching performance (-0.290). Indicators of personality variables that significantly influenced teaching performance included appropriate dress compatibility (impact value: 0.102), respected behavior (impact value: 0.122), decisive speech (impact value: 0.194), swift attire presentation (impact value: 0.251), and a fit appearance (impact value: 0.098). From the teachers' perspectives, critical aspects of social and personality competencies that enhance teaching performance were effective communication with students and parents, a wise personality, and a strong sense of true life calling. These traits enable teachers to navigate challenges and adversities effectively.

The researchers employed mixed-method research to do a need analysis and design the English materials. Choosing and Analyzing the English material from the 4th grade's book was the first step in collecting the data. Then, the researchers spread the questionnaires to the 13 teachers and 71 students as the research participants that have selected purposively. The data was analyzed using explanatory sequential mixed methods, in which the qualitative data was used to explain the quantitative data results. This paper revealed that teachers and students agreed that infusing intercultural awareness is essential to learning English. They also proposed the appropriate materials to be developed with the researchers, such as adding typical food and traditional festival in the introduction materials. After designing and developing the materials, the researchers finally produced online materials in the form of video. The researchers tried to implement the video to get constructive feedback. The students' and teachers' perspectives are almost the same. HIGHLIGHTS : Infusing intercultural awareness is essential in ELT since it gained someadvantages of increasing knowledge about cultural diversity by using English. The most appropriate teaching materials, methods, and activities in ELT for 4th grade are determined by the students’ needs and teachers’ perspectives. Designing and developing English materials could enhance the quality of the teaching and learning process, whether inside or inside the classroom. Even though, there are still some challenges such as the students limitation on having English vocabularies and teachers with limited knowledge in teaching strategies.

Abstract

This article discusses the application of short videos and pictures in teaching ESP procedure texts in computer and network engineering majors. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study design to explore the integration of video and pictures in ESP teaching, the challenges teachers face in integrating videos and pictures in ESP teaching, and how teachers overcome these challenges. The participants of this study consisted of one English teacher in computer and network engineering class who was selected by purposive sampling. The research was conducted at SMK Mahardika Malang and involved English teachers from the computer and network engineering department. Data collection methods included observation and interviews with teachers, focusing on the procedures for integrating short videos and pictures, the challenges faced, and solutions to overcome these challenges. The findings reveal that there are several activities in the classroom, namely teacher activities, student activities, and the learning and teaching process. Teachers face three challenges. The first is time constraints. To overcome this challenge, teachers must use pictures and short videos wisely and adjust them to the time available in the lesson plan. The second is the mismatch of learning material sources. The solution to this challenge is to use effective multimedia such as the Internet and YouTube. The third is students' low motivation to learn English and write procedural texts. The solution to this challenge is for teachers to approach students emotionally, consult with their parents, and provide project-based learning strategies using English. This research provides valuable insights for ESP education, emphasizing the importance of adapting content to industry needs, addressing motivation issues, and effectively using multimedia elements.

Abstract

The concept of learning styles proposing the alignment of teaching methods and individual learning styles to enhance learning outcomes has gained popularity among English language teachers. However, numerous studies have debunked the concept by exposing weaknesses in the instruments used to measure learning styles and the underlying hypothesis. Therefore, there is a need for more research focusing on the merits and demerits of implementing learning styles theory in EFL classroom instruction. This study is presented to provide empirical understanding into the issue by presenting the latest research findings and providing recommendations for EFL teachers. To achieve this aim, the researchers conduct a literature review by collecting data from various document references and theories supporting the research. The literature was collected from journal articles published in the last five years, from 2018 to 2023. Based on the review, some studies confirmed that tailoring teaching methods to individual learning styles contributed to improved learning outcomes for EFL students. Conversely, other research has shown no significant or consistent correlation between teaching-specific learning styles and students' achievement. To address this disparity, the present study suggested that foreign language teachers maximize teaching-learning by considering several factors rather than one, such as teaching strategy, students' interpersonal orientations, knowledge, students' background, and interests. Teachers can balance instructional approaches, methods, and activities and apply various teaching strategies to reach all learners.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges and strategies involved in facilitating virtual exchange programs for primary school students, a group often overlooked due to their beginner-level English proficiency. The shortage of English teachers in Indonesian primary schools further complicates participation in international collaborations. This research investigates how educators navigate these challenges, focusing on their pedagogical strategies, obstacles, and adaptations in virtual exchanges. Using a qualitative approach, the study gathers insights from an elementary school teacher in Indonesia responsible for international programs. Thematic analysis identifies three key strategies: L1 translation, authentic material integration, and structured preparation to enhance student engagement and comprehension. Despite these efforts, teachers face time constraints and difficulties in understanding discussion topics. Findings suggest that while L1 translation supports comprehension, excessive reliance may hinder English acquisition. The study emphasizes the need to balance linguistic and intercultural competencies through immersive, interactive learning. It advocates for inclusive educational practices that promote cross-cultural awareness and language development among young learners. Future research should explore diverse educational settings and scalable models for integrating virtual exchanges into primary English language teaching.

Abstract

Environmental risk perception has a long-time travel in the public participation in environmental fields. This perception involves individually socially constructed physical and mental experiences that involve many factors just for knowledge, attitudes, and the culture that develops in society. An individual's understanding of environmental risk provides an overview of an individual's preparedness for appropriate environmental risk strategies and measures. This cross-sectional survey study aims to collect data on the environmental risk perception of Indonesian students. The survey data instrument used in this study is the environmental risk perception scale (ERPS) questionnaire, transformed into Google Forms in the Indonesian language. The target respondents were 1,267 students from 1,300 undergraduate population size of educational study programs in the field of biology who came from various institutions in Indonesia. Sexual category, grade point average (GPA), and university status to explore the perception of the active student environment of prospective biology teachers with various parameters. The results showed several interesting findings: the female sex is more sensitive to environmental risks, academic abilities play a more logical role in environmental risk analysis, and respondents who have taken environmental courses have a higher sensitivity to environmental risk.
