Methods: This article is a systematic review of published evidences about the empirical and pharmacological effects of SMS available from Sciencedirect, PubMed and CNKI data bases. Results: In the classical book of TCM, SMS is stated to have the effect of enhancing Qi and Yin. Nowadays it is widely used to treat arrhythmia, myocarditis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, and others. Many pharmacologic and clinical studies indicate its mechanism and effectiveness for the treatment of those various diseases. Conclusion: The empirical effects of SMS have largely been proven to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic, anti-hypoxia, immune-potentiation, and other effects, and to be effective in treatment of angina pectoris, myocarditis, coronary heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmia, and others.

Abstract

This literature review aimed to analyze the effectiveness of educational media in improving knowledge and self-management among patients with Diabetes Mellitus to prevent hyperglycemia emergencies. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2019–2024 using MeSH-based keywords related to diabetes education and self-management. Studies that met inclusion criteria involved adult diabetes patients receiving educational interventions through printed, audiovisual, or digital media. Findings showed that digital media, such as smartphone applications, interactive videos, telehealth, and gamification, consistently demonstrated significant improvements in knowledge, self-care behaviors, treatment adherence, and glycemic control. Audiovisual media also enhanced understanding and self-management skills, while printed media remained beneficial for older adults and individuals with limited digital literacy. Overall, multimodal educational strategies that combined digital and traditional media were most effective, particularly when supported by healthcare providers. These results indicated that educational media played a critical role in empowering diabetes patients to manage their disease and prevent hyperglycemia emergencies, including Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State.

Abstract

Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) affects approximately 45–95% of women of reproductive age in Indonesia and may interfere with daily activities. Dysmenorrhea is a gynecological disorder caused by an imbalance of progesterone in the blood, leading to pain. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dysmenorrhea is referred to as tongjing and is often associated with yang deficiency syndrome. Ginger and palm sugar decoction has natural warming, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects, making it suitable for treating cold-type menstrual pain based on TCM principles. Objective: To determine the effect of ginger and palm sugar decoction on reducing primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents with yang deficiency syndrome. Methods: A quantitative study using a single-group pretest-posttest design without a control group. A total of 20 adolescent girls aged 10–18 were given the decoction three times a day for two days. The study was conducted at Mitshaqul Ummah Islamic Boarding School, Cianjur Regency. Results: The average pain score decreased from 4.10 to 1.75 after intervention. The Paired Sample T-Test showed a t-value of 14.104 (df = 19) with a significance level of p < 0.001, indicating a statistically significant reduction in pain. A 50% decrease was also found in seven key indicators of yang deficiency symptoms, based on a TCM physical constitution questionnaire. Conclusion: Ginger and palm sugar decoction significantly reduces the severity of primary dysmenorrhea and alleviates symptoms of yang deficiency. These findings are consistent with TCM principles, which emphasize warming the body and strengthening yang energy to relieve pain.

Abstract

Background: Obesity (Féi Pàng) is one of the health problems that has increased significantly in Indonesia. Based on Riskesdas 2023, the national obesity prevalence reaches 28.7% and is higher in the group of women of childbearing age. Obesity contributes to metabolic disorders, the risk of non-communicable diseases, as well as hormonal and reproductive dysfunction. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (PTT), obesity is seen as a result of imbalances in spleen and stomach function, moisture accumulation, and gastric heat syndrome (Wei Re). Proper treatment requires holistic approaches such as acupuncture and herbs. One of the herbs used is Murraya paniculata (Jiǔ lǐ xiāng), which empirically and pharmacologically has hypolipidemic and heat-decay effects. This therapy is believed to reduce Body Mass Index (BMI) effectively. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of acupuncture therapy and Murraya paniculata (Jiǔ lǐ xiāng) on the reduction of BMI in obese women with gastric heat syndrome. Methods: The study used a pre-experimental quantitative design with a one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 women aged 21–36 years who underwent therapy 6 times for 2 weeks at the Petos Sehat Clinic in Jakarta. Data were collected through BMI measurements before and after the intervention. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The data was analyzed using a paired t-test statistical test. Results: The average BMI before therapy showed a value of 30.19 kg/m² After the intervention, the average BMI decreased to 29.31 kg/m².

Abstract

Biology, as a branch of natural science, requires not only mastery of theoretical concepts but also practical application to enhance students' understanding of biological phenomena. This community service activity aims to implement biology practices through the creation of an insectarium as a learning medium for high school students at the Raudhatul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Ogan Ilir Regency. The implementation method used a socialization approach, material presentation, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and interactive discussions. This activity was also supported by the use of computer-based media and simple laboratory equipment. Student understanding was evaluated using pre- and post-socialization questionnaires with five main indicators: knowledge of insect types, insectarium terms, purposes and benefits, tools and materials, and the stages of insectarium construction. The results of the activity showed an increase in student understanding after the socialization, characterized by an increased ability to systematically understand the concepts, functions, and processes of insectarium construction. This activity also improved students' practical skills, accuracy, and scientific attitudes through hands-on, experiential learning. Thus, the practical application of biology through the creation of an insectarium has proven effective in improving students' understanding and skills, making it a viable alternative for practical and contextual biology learning media at the secondary school level.
