Abstract

The primary etiologic agent of gingival disease was dental plaque which also involving the oral hygiene. The oral hygiene can be affected by individuals knowledge, attitude, practice, environment, and others. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between oral hygiene and gingival condition of Malaysian students. The type of this study was cross-sectional study. The study was conducted on a total of 66 Malaysian students. The data were collected by using an examination form and clinical examination using the Loe & Sillness gingival index followed by the Loe & Sillness plaque index. The results showed that 100% of students have gingivitis with the gingival index average of 1.25 and the plaque index average of 1.85. The relationship of gingival and plaque index was analyzed by using Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient test, and the score was 0.623. It is concluded that the oral hygiene status of Malaysian students was in the fair category, and all Malaysian students had a moderate gingivitis. Also, there was a relationship between the oral hygiene status and gingival condition of Malaysian students.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease caused by a disproportion between environmental factors such as periodontal pathogens and the host defence. Genetic factors, hormones, and nutrition may influence host defence mechanisms. One of the nutrition needed for periodontal health is vitamin C. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation on gingival bleeding. Methods: As much as ninety-eight patients with chronic periodontitis consisted of 42 males and 56 females, aged 30 – 59-years-old participated in this study. Gingival bleeding was assessed before and after 3 months administered with vitamin C supplementation. Gingival bleeding criteria was based on Van der Velden with tooth selection based on Ramfjörd. Result: Gingival bleeding before the administration of vitamin C supplementation was found in the high category at 4 patients (4.1%), medium at 36 patients (36.7%), and low at 58 patients (59.2%).  After 3 months administration of vitamin C supplementation, high category gingival bleeding was found in 2 patients (2%), medium in 16 patients (16.3%), and low in 80 patients (81.6%). Conclusion: There was an effect of vitamin C supplementation on gingival bleeding.Keywords: Chronic periodontitis, vitamin C supplementation, gingival bleeding.

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis is an inflamatory process in supporting tissues of the teeth including the gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Perioditis ntitis begins with migration of junctional ephithelium toward the apical side and form a pocket on gingiva. Aggressive periodontitis is one of the classifications of periodontitis with characteristics of attacking teens to young adults in relatively fast can lead to severe alveolar bone loss and it is not comparable with local factors that there. Trabeculae are part of the alveolar bone covered by compact bone and cortical bone harder . On radiographs, trabeculae only seen as a radiolucent surrounded by a radiopaque. The purpose of this research was to know the description of alveolar trabecular bone in patients with aggressive periodontitis using Cone Beam Computed Tomography imaging. Methods: This study is descriptive on 72 samples of aggressive periodontitis alveolar travecular bon e by CBCT imaging, taken from 6 archival aggressive periodontitis patients as research subjects, obtained from secondary data in the Radiology Department of RSGM FKG UNPAD. Results: The results of this study from the 3D CBCT imaging of alveolar trabecular bone leading to further describe the more posterior a decline in trabecular bone density and decrease in patients with aggressive periodontitis. Conclusion: The 3D CBCT imaging of alveolar trabecular bone leading to further describe the more posterior a decline in trabecular bone density and decrease in patients with aggressive periodontitis.
