Abstract

Introduction: Dental and oral health can affect the quality of life as it relates to the general health condition. Dental and oral health problem that mostly found is dental caries. Dental caries mostly occurs in children in the mixed dentition stage. The mixed dentition stage occurs in elementary school-aged children, mark with malocclusions and tooth decays, that allows food retention as main cause of dental caries. The purpose of this study was to see the description of dental caries on mixed dentition stage of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. Methods: This research was a descriptive research with cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. The sampling method used was purposive sampling method. The caries profile was measured by deft index for deciduous teeth and DMFT index for permanent teeth were presented in tabular and diagrams. Results: The results of the study towards 272 elementary school students showed that the average value of deft index was 3.99 and DMFT index value was 1.26. This result can be caused since the location of the population was located in urban areas, with easy access to dental and oral health services and good tendencies towards the awareness of dental and oral health care. Conclusion: Dental caries of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center based on (World Health Organization) guidelines by deft index was category as moderate and by DMFT index was classified low category.

Abstract

The correlation between perceptions about oral health and the public’s interest to go to a dentist: a cross-sectional study Introduction: People tend to visit dental health facilities only when complaints arise, which leads to low public interest. This is due to a lack of public awareness in seeking treatment, which contributes to poor dental and oral health and is associated with perception. A good perception generates interest; if a person perceives benefits for themselves, they will be motivated to act. Patient interest in seeking treatment can be influenced by access and distance to health facilities. This study aims to analyze the correlation between public perception of dental and oral health and interest in seeking treatment from a dentist. Methods: The type of study is cross-sectional with a total of 100 respondents taken using the Purposive Sampling technique. The minimum required sample size was 92 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The questionnaire consisted of 15 statements regarding dental and oral health and 15 statements related to treatment interest, and was distributed offline through face to face interaction with the community. Results: There was a correlation between public perception of dental and oral health and the interest in seeking treatment from a dentist, with a p value of 0.001 and a correlation coefficient value of 0.336. This indicates that the strength of the correlation can be categorized as moderate between perception and interest in dental treatment. Conclusion: there is a correlation between public perception of oral health and public’s interest to go to a dentist. The higher the perception of oral health, the higher the public's interest in going to the dentist. Interest in treatment is related to oral health awareness, as it can influence daily life.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Streptococcus mutans bacteria is one of the microorganisms that form plaque on the denture. Plaque can be cleaned using nylon denture brush fibers, which have no antibacterial effect and are at risk of becoming a medium for contamination. Nylon fibers can be replaced by natural fibers, namely apus bamboo (Gigantochloa apus). The purpose of the study was to analyze the difference between apus bamboo and nylon denture brush fibers based on the level of Streptococcus mutans contamination. Methods: The type of research was laboratory experimental with pre-test and post-test with control group design. Sampling using the unpaired numerical comparative test sample size formula. The treatment group with apus bamboo fibers was 10 samples while the control group with nylon fibers was 10 samples. Each sample was soaked for 3 minutes in a bacterial suspension, followed by dilution to 10-5, and counted by the total plate count (TPC) method. Variable measurements were taken before and after 24 hours of standing, then the amount of Streptococcus mutans contamination was compared between bamboo and nylon. Results: The mean number of Streptococcus mutans contamination after 24 hours of standing on the bamboo fibers was 7.6x106 and nylon fibers 1.7x105, then tested using the Mann-Whitney and obtained a value of p=0.009 (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a difference between apus bamboo and nylon denture brush fibers based on the contamination level of Streptococcus mutans after standing for 24 hours. Keywords: brush fiber, dentures, bamboo apus, nylon, streptococcus mutans. Metode: Jenis penelitian yaitu eksperimental laboratorik dengan rancangan pre-test and post-test with control group design.
