Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of dental caries among children has increased in the past decades. Dental caries has a multifactorial aetiology, including host (saliva and teeth), microbiology (plaque), substrate (diet), and time. The role of fermentable carbohydrates intake as a risk factor in the initiation and progression of dental caries. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dental caries and carbohydrates intake among preschool-aged children in rural and urban areas of the city of Cimahi, Indonesia. Methods: The method used was an analytical cross-sectional study with pathfinder survey based on the WHO basic methods of oral health surveys. The data were collected through intraoral examination, and nutritional status measurement was done by using food frequency questionnaire. Statistical analysis used was the chi-square test. Results: From the study towards 100 preschool children resulted the prevalence of dental caries in rural and urban area respectively was 96 and 92%. The average value of deft index in urban area was 8.46 (95% CI:7.00-9.91) and was 7.98 (95% CI:6.50-9.45) in rural area. The average value of sucrose intake frequency in urban area was 237.14 (95% CI:204.95-269.32), whilst in rural area was 177.54 (95% CI:155.66-199.41). Conclusion: There was a relationship between dental caries and carbohydrates intake among preschool-aged children in the rural and urban area of the city of Cimahi, Indonesia.

Abstract

Introduction: Endodontic treatment failure can be caused by the bacterium E. faecalis, which has a prevalence of up to 90%. E. faecalis is difficult to eradicate because it forms a biofilm to defend itself against antibacterial agents. Lime leaves are one of the many herbal products available in Indonesia (Citrus hystrix DC). Lime leaf extracts include antibacterial components such as essential oils, phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of lime leaf extract against E. faecalis bacterium. Material and Methods: The agar diffusion technique was used for four experimental groups, using lime leaf extract at 4% (group 1), 8% (group 2), and 16% (group 3) as the negative control. Each group was repeated six times on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) medium with a paper disc, and the diameter of the inhibitory zone was measured with a caliper. Results and Discussions: The results revealed that a 4 % concentration of lime leaf extract had an average inhibition zone diameter of 7.31 mm, an 8 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 8.59 mm, and a 16 % concentration had an average inhibition zone diameter of 11.41 mm. The difference in the inhibition zone was statistically significant (p= 0,000) evaluated using the one-way ANOVA. Conclusion: It can be concluded that lime leaf extract is antibacterial potential against E. faecalis bacteria in the endodontic treatment.

Abstract

Oxidative stress in the oral cavity, driven by an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, can lead to lipid peroxidation, as reflected by elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in saliva. Proper oral hygiene, such as regular tooth brushing, is vital in mitigating oxidative damage. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of rambutan honey toothpaste with a color indicator on reducing oxidative stress in the oral cavity by measuring salivary MDA levels. This research was conducted using a laboratory experimental design, with saliva samples collected from students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani. Participants were assigned to five groups: rambutan honey toothpaste with a color indicator (RHTCI), rambutan honey toothpaste without a color indicator (RHT), color-indicated toothpaste without honey (TCI), base toothpaste (BT), and distilled water (DW). The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) method was applied to assess MDA levels, and statistical analysis was conducted using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed a significant reduction in salivary MDA levels following the use of RHTCI (p = 0.0001). A notable difference was also found between RHTCI and TCI (p = 0.001), while no significant difference was observed between RHTCI and RHT (p = 0.190). These findings suggest that rambutan honey toothpaste with a color indicator effectively reduces salivary MDA levels, highlighting its potential antioxidant benefits.

Abstract

Introduction: Composite resin has been used as a restoration material for quite a long time. Two different methods were expected to show result of which method that would be the most promising. Aim of study is to analyzed differences the hardness of one composite resin subjected to two post curing treatments. Methods: This study was a true experimental research (in vitro). The subjects were 30 specimens of the hybrid light cured resin composites made in a mold (6 mm diameter and 4 mm high). The hardness of all specimens were tested using Rebound Hardness Tester. Data were compared using ANOVA and post hoc analysis (for pairwise independent groups) using t-tests. Results: This study showed that post curing treatment by heat (for 10 min at 110 oC ) showed higher hardness (p<0.005). Conclusion: There was difference of hardness between two methods of post curing. Moreover, post curing with dry heat sterilizer at 110oC for 10 min was found to be the most promising post curing method.
