Abstract

Pesantren is one of the oldest educational institutions in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze how social capital contributes to economic independence at Pesantren Aulia Cendekia in Palembang, Indonesia. This is due to limited funding sources and competition among educational institutions. Pesantren, as an institution with a unique educational program centered on religious teaching, uses social capital to maintain financial sustainability by utilizing business units within the institution. This study examines the assets of pesantren business units using Robert D. Putnam's social capital theory, which links social capital with economic independence. With a comprehensive and contextual approach, this study uses qualitative methodology and collects data through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the economic success of pesantren depends not only on their tangible assets but also on the quality of connections, teamwork, and important figures such as ustadz. Using sustainable business units, such as managing productive waqf (Islamic endowment funds), establishing business incubators, and forming Micro Waqf Banks in collaboration with the government, Islamic boarding schools utilize their social capital, which includes alumni networks and trust. In addition to business units, the ustad also plays an important role in the sustainability of Islamic boarding schools in terms of their economic independence.

Abstract

This article examines the role of gadgets as new agents of socialization in postmodern families, with a particular focus on toddlers in the digital era. Using a literature study approach, the research systematically reviews findings from academic articles, research reports, and relevant studies published within the last five years. The unit of analysis is toddlers’ interaction with gadgets in the context of postmodern families, which are viewed as new social spaces where values, norms, and behaviors are formed. The research population consists of scholarly literature on gadget use in early childhood during the digital era, while the sample was selected based on inclusion criteria, namely relevance to family socialization, the role of technology in parenting, and its impact on toddlers’ development. The findings indicate that gadgets function not only as entertainment devices but also as agents of socialization that shape communication patterns, interaction, as well as cognitive and social development. However, gadgets bring dual implications: they provide opportunities for developmental stimulation yet also pose risks of reduced face-to-face interactions with parents. Therefore, postmodern families must adopt adaptive parenting strategies that balance gadget use with conventional social interactions.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has created new spaces for individuals to construct and present their identities in digital environments. This study aims to examine how sociology students construct their academic identity through personal branding practices on TikTok, with particular attention to how they translate sociological knowledge, manage self-presentation, and negotiate platform dynamics. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews and observations of TikTok accounts belonging to sociology students at Universitas Sriwijaya, who actively produce content related to social issues. The findings reveal that TikTok functions as a digital stage where students strategically construct their academic identities by transforming sociological perspectives into accessible and engaging content. This process involves three interconnected dimensions: the translation of academic knowledge into digital formats, the use of impression-management strategies through language, visuals, and communication styles, and the negotiation between maintaining academic authenticity and adapting to algorithmic visibility. Audience interactions, such as likes, comments, and follower growth, play a significant role in legitimizing the identity performed by students, while algorithmic structures shape how knowledge is presented and distributed. This study concludes that personal branding on TikTok is not merely a form of self-expression but a reflexive and strategic process of identity construction within algorithm-driven public spaces. By highlighting the role of students as emerging intellectual actors, this study contributes to the development of digital sociology, particularly in understanding how academic identity and knowledge dissemination are transformed in contemporary digital culture.

Abstract

Crime is a daily phenomenon that emerges within society. From a structural-functional perspective, crime is considered disturbing and disruptive to the harmonious and stable order of life (social pathology). Drug-related crime is considered a serious crime, even bordering on extraordinary crime, as it has a significant negative impact on the wider community. The research aims to describe the handling of drug-related crimes by the police apparatus in South Sumatra. The research method used is qualitative research to examine incidents and various data variations that emerge in the field, employing a case study approach. The results and discussions show that the South Sumatra Provincial Police have been responsive in addressing drug-related issues in the province, ranging from prevention to rehabilitation, using 4 approaches: 1) Soft Power Coach, 2) Hard Power Coach, 3) Smart Power Coach, and 4) Corporation. The use of drugs can occur due to several factors, namely Poverty Factors, Environmental Factors, Criminal Involvement Factors, and Dependency Factors, highlighting the need for optimal supervision to prevent individuals who have recovered from relapsing into drug consumption. BNN South Sumatra collaborates with the PKK board to create a drug-free village with the aim of monitoring indications of drug use in the village community and forming a rehabilitation task force that is responsible for socializing the community not to use drugs again and stay away from drug use in the community.

Abstract

This study examines how the farming profession is portrayed and understood on YouTube, a platform that has received little attention in previous academic work. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s theory of representation and using a digital ethnography approach, the research analyzes six selected YouTube videos, identified through the PRISMA method. Through thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti, the study identifies key symbolic representations, while sentiment analysis with AI Studio categorizes audience responses as positive, negative, or neutral. The findings suggest that video formats—such as monologues, vlog-style storytelling, and complex editing—contribute to diverse portrayals of farmers. Negative portrayals, as seen in Indonesia Terancam Krisis Petani Muda (CNN Indonesia), tend to reinforce views of farming as difficult and economically insecure. On the other hand, videos like Pengantin Baru Lulusan Sarjana Sukses Jadi Petani (Wong Ladangan) offer more positive narratives, showing farming as a viable and rewarding profession. This study contributes to discussions on digital representation by showing how online media shape public perceptions of professional identities. It also provides practical insights for agricultural policymakers and content creators to rethink how farming is communicated to the public, particularly to younger audiences.
