Abstract

The accelerating pace of digital transformation has heightened the demand for governance innovation in Islamic education institutions, particularly madrasahs striving to balance managerial effectiveness with ethical accountability. Although existing literature has explored digitalization in Islamic education, empirical research that explicitly addresses Artificial Intelligence-Based Islamic Education Management as a form of madrasah governance innovation remains limited. This study aims to investigate how AI-based Islamic education management is implemented and how it contributes to governance innovation in the digital era. A qualitative case study design was employed in selected madrasahs that have initiated digital transformation and adopted AI-supported management systems. Participants included madrasah principals, vice principals, senior teachers, academic coordinators, and information system operators who were directly involved in governance and managerial decision-making. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns related to governance practices and innovation processes. The findings demonstrate that Artificial Intelligence-Based Islamic Education Management enhances governance effectiveness by enabling data-driven decision-making, improving administrative efficiency, and strengthening transparency and accountability in line with Islamic ethical values such as amanah and shūrā. Nevertheless, challenges related to digital literacy, infrastructure readiness, and ethical concerns regarding data use remain evident. The study implies that while AI-based management offers substantial potential for madrasah governance innovation, its sustainability depends on institutional capacity building, ethical governance frameworks, and supportive policy environments.

Abstract

This study examines the role of transformational leadership and self-efficacy in explaining lecturer performance in fulfilling the Tri Dharma of higher education, namely teaching, research, and community service. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 112 lecturers at IAIN Curup through a structured questionnaire measuring transformational leadership, self-efficacy, and lecturer performance. The data were analysed using regression-based simple mediation analysis to test the direct effect of transformational leadership on lecturer performance and its indirect effect through self-efficacy. The findings show that transformational leadership had a small positive direct effect on lecturer performance (β = 0.150, p = 0.037), and self-efficacy had a small positive effect on lecturer performance (β = 0.198, p = 0.042). Transformational leadership had a weak positive effect on self-efficacy (β = 0.154, p = 0.039). The indirect effect through self-efficacy was very small (β = 0.030), although the bootstrapped 95% confidence interval did not include zero. These results indicate that self-efficacy functions as a statistically supported but practically limited mediator. The study contributes to Islamic education management by showing that transformational leadership and self-efficacy remain relevant in Indonesian Islamic higher education. Still, their explanatory power is limited without broader institutional variables such as workload, governance, research support, and professional development. However, the study is limited by its single-institution cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reported data. Future research should implement longitudinal or mixed-method designs across multiple institutions, using structural equation modelling to test comprehensive moderated-mediation frameworks that explicitly integrate macro-organisational variables such as workload distribution, institutional governance, publication support, and administrative constraints.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the implementation of good governance principles in pesantren management in Bengkulu Province, to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing its application, and to evaluate the extent to which such implementation contributes to the achievement of pesantren independence. The analysis emphasises three key dimensions of independence: financial, institutional, and academic. Through an in-depth qualitative inquiry, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relevance and strategic significance of good governance in strengthening the autonomy and sustainability of Islamic educational institutions in the region. A qualitative research approach was adopted to explore in detail the dynamics of implementing good governance principles and their implications for institutional independence. The study was conducted in several representative pesantren in Bengkulu Province, selected based on their scale (large, medium, and small) and organisational characteristics, particularly the presence of business units or managerial structures reflecting independent governance. The findings reveal that the implementation of good governance principles, transparency, accountability, participation, effectiveness and efficiency, independence, and fairness has shown notable progress, although the degree of application varies among institutions. Supporting factors include the charismatic leadership of the kiai, a strong culture of independence, competent human resources, community participation, alumni engagement, and supportive government policies. Conversely, inhibiting factors comprise limited financial capacity, weak managerial competence, resistance to change, and dependence on external assistance. Overall, the application of good governance contributes strategically to enhancing pesantren independence across financial, institutional, and academic dimensions through transparent fund management, professional governance, and curriculum innovation
