Abstract

Rivers in Indonesia are heavily polluted, with the main source of pollution coming from industrial waste, including poorly managed mining activities. The airlift pump is used to lift liquid or sediment from a water reservoir that has a lower elevation through a vertical pipe that is partially submerged in the water. This research aims to determine the effect of air flow rate on the performance of the airlift pump during operation under three-phase flow conditions. The performance of the airlift pump is examined through several parameters: superficial velocity, effectiveness, efficiency, and flow patterns. In this study, a tank measuring 50x50x50 cm and a 2.54 m tall acrylic pipe are used as the riser to facilitate the lifting of three-phase flow to the separator component that separates the three phases located at the end of the riser. With a submergence ratio of ¾ h or 1.905 m and using variations of air flow rates of 30, 40, 50, and 60 LPM. The results of this research confirm that increasing air flow rate enhances superficial velocity in all three phases. At air flow rates of 30-50 LPM, the efficiency increases from 4.18 ×10-3 % and peaks at 5.14 ×10-3 %. At 60 LPM, it decreases to 4.88 ×10-3 %. The highest effectiveness reaches 1.281 at an air flow rate of 60 LPM. The optimal flow pattern occurs in slug flow and transitions towards churn flow.

Abstract

This study experimentally investigates the effects of water column height and air flow rate on the performance of a two-phase airlift pump with a 15° injector angle. Two water column heights  and  and four air flow rates (30, 40, 50, and 60 LPM) were tested in a laboratory-scale setup. Efficiency was calculated using the Nicklin model, while effectiveness was determined based on the ratio of water to air mass flow rates. Flow patterns were recorded and analyzed using a high-speed camera. The results showed that increasing the water column height significantly improved both efficiency and effectiveness, with the highest values—12.270% and 2354.78, respectively achieved at  and 60 LPM. Flow pattern observations revealed that slug flow dominated at partial submergence, whereas churn flow became prevalent at full submergence with higher air flow rates. The findings demonstrate that optimizing submergence ratio, air flow rate, and injector configuration is essential for achieving high-performance and energy-efficient airlift pump operation.

Abstract

The airlift pump is a device used to lift a mixture of liquid and solid particles through a vertical pipe and is capable of continuous operation. This device serves as a cost-effective solution for water lifting applications and is resistant to solid particles that may otherwise damage conventional pump components. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a two-phase airlift pump based on variations in submergence ratio and injected air flow rate. The main focus is to examine the effects of these parameters on water discharge, the resulting flow patterns, efficiency, and effectiveness of the airlift pump. Experiments were conducted using submergence ratios of h, h, and h, and air flow rates of 30 lpm, 40 lpm, 50 lpm, and 60 lpm. The test results show that increasing the submergence ratio and air flow rate leads to an increase in water discharge and efficiency up to a certain point, after which both values begin to decline. The highest efficiency and effectiveness were recorded at an air flow rate of 40 lpm with a submergence ratio of h, yielding an efficiency of 3.34% and an effectiveness of 888.60. However, once the pump reaches its peak performance, further increases in air flow rate lead to a decrease in overall performance. The observed flow patterns include bubbly, slug, and churn flow. The bubbly flow pattern typically appears at the tail end of slug flow. The results also indicate that higher submergence ratios and air flow rates produce higher water discharge, greater efficiency, and improved effectiveness of the airlift pump.

Abstract

This research analyzes the effect of combustion temperature on slagging formation in Solid Refuse-Derived Fuel (SRDF) and evaluates the effectiveness of dolomite additives in mitigating this issue. While SRDF is a promising alternative fuel for co-firing systems, its high ash and alkali metal content often lead to slagging, which can impair combustion performance. The experimental method utilized a muffle furnace with temperature variations of 600°C, 700°C, and 800°C for a duration of 120 minutes. The SRDF samples consisted of an 8:2 ratio of organic to inorganic waste, integrated with 10% dolomite additive based on a 50-gram total sample mass. Observed parameters included slagging mass, slag distribution, and calorific value. The results indicate that temperature significantly influences slagging formation. Furthermore, the addition of dolomite effectively reduces slag formation by increasing the ash fusion temperature through the creation of calcium-based compounds. With the additive, the fuel achieved a calorific value of 4,013.09 cal/g, meeting national (SNI) standards. Ultimately, dolomite proves to be an effective solution for optimizing SRDF utilization as a sustainable energy source in co-firing applications.
