Abstract

Temperature control is a crucial factor in the coffee fermentation process, as it influences both microbial activity and the quality of the final product. This study aimed to design a heating unit based on a shell-and-coil heat exchanger, utilizing R32 refrigerant as the heat source for the water jacket system of a coffee fermentation bioreactor. The design was developed using the Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD) method and subsequently validated through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation using ANSYS Fluent. Calculations yielded a heating unit with a capacity of 137.4 L, a coil length of 22.02 m, and a heat transfer rate of 1,354 W. Simulation results showed the water temperature rising from 27°C to 48°C, while the refrigerant temperature dropped from 90°C to 69.9°C. The simulation results differed from the theoretical values by approximately 2°C, indicating that the design effectively meets the heating requirements of the water jacket system. This research demonstrates that utilizing heat from an air conditioner condenser with R32 refrigerant offers a potential alternative for an efficient heating system in coffee fermentation bioreactors.

Abstract

Coffee husk waste is a promising biomass resource for renewable energy production through gasification; however, its utilization remains relatively limited. This study aimed to design a container-based downdraft gasification reactor with a processing capacity of 50 kg/h and evaluate its thermal performance through temperature distribution analysis using SolidWorks Simulation. The reactor dimensions were determined based on stoichiometric calculations with an equivalence ratio (ER) of 0.3, resulting in a reactor diameter of 760 mm, a height of 1900 mm, a throat diameter of 234 mm, and a nozzle diameter of 34 mm. Thermal simulations were conducted under steady-state conditions using Stainless Steel (SS) 310S as the reactor material. The applied thermal loads were 269.651°C in the drying and pyrolysis zone, 759.150°C in the oxidation (throat) zone, 250.843°C in the reduction zone, and 140.045°C at the grate, with a natural convection boundary condition of 5 W/(m²·K). The results showed that the highest temperature of 759.150°C occurred in the throat region, while the maximum outer surface temperature reached approximately 59.566°C. The estimated convective heat loss to the surrounding environment was 0.78 kW, equivalent to only 0.31% of the biomass energy input, indicating that the selected SS 310S material and wall thickness configuration provided effective thermal insulation. These findings provide a practical reference for the design and thermal optimization of safe and efficient container-based biomass gasification reactors

Abstract

Manual coffee cherry sorting has limitations in terms of capacity, consistency, and efficiency, making it necessary to develop a sorting machine with a strong, safe, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective structure. This study aims to design the frame of a coffee cherry sorting machine and determine the most suitable materials for the frame and hopper through static structural simulation. The design was developed using SolidWorks, while the structural analysis was conducted using SolidWorks Simulation based on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method to evaluate the von Mises stress, displacement, and Factor of Safety (FOS). The simulation results indicate that Galvanized Steel is the most suitable material for the machine frame, as it provides safe structural performance with maximum stress below the material’s yield strength, low displacement, and Factor of Safety that satisfies engineering safety requirement. In addition, Galvanized Steel offers better corrosion resistance and material cost efficiency than the other evaluated materials. For the hopper, Stainless Steel 201 demonstrated the best performance, achieving an excellent structural strength and corrosion resistance for coffee cherry handling applications. Based on the static simulation and cost analysis, Galvanized Steel is recommended as the frame material, while Stainless Steel 201 is recommended as the hopper material because they provide the best balance of structural strength, safety, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency
