Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Malang City's city branding strategy through the management of Kampoeng Heritage Kajoetangan by the Pokdarwis (Tourism Awareness Group) in increasing international tourist visits. City branding is understood as a strategic communication tool used by cities to build a global image and attractiveness, in this case focusing on heritage areas as representations of local identity. Pokdarwis serves as the grassroots actor implementing branding strategies through historical narratives, cultural preservation, digital promotion, and collaboration with government and tourism sectors. This research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, documentation, and literature studies. The findings show that the city branding strategy executed by Pokdarwis is relatively effective in enhancing the attractiveness of Kajoetangan for international tourists, as indicated by an increase in foreign tourist visits over the past two years. This effectiveness is supported by community synergy, strong cultural storytelling, and consistent promotion through social media and tourism events. These findings highlight the crucial role of local communities in city diplomacy and strengthening international image through culture-based tourism.

Abstract

This research focuses on the role of the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in implementing the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes’ (UNODC) Alternative Development program in 2019-2022. This study uses descriptive qualitative method and the alternative development concept to examine the study case. Data collection technique includes documentation from literature sources and interviews. The results of this research found that the Indonesian National Narcotics Agency has implemented the UNODC’s Alternative Development in 2019-2022 by creating a Grand Design of Alternative Development (GDAD) in Aceh Province, as a pilot project. The GDAD in Aceh diverts farmers’ narcotic plantation into alternative agricultural commodities. Hence, the BNN has implemented all of the UNODC’s Alternative Development components, including Agricultural Development, Basic Infrastructure, Community Development, Education, Environmental Protection, Gender Equality, Health, Improved Markets, and Security Rule of Law. The program was considered effective, because many farmers in Aceh whom had previously planted narcotic plants converted their farmland into plantation of crops with high selling values.

Abstract

The Strait of Malacca has been a strategic route for the meeting of economic, cultural, ideological and political interests since thousands of years ago. One of the impacts of this strategic meeting was the emergence of Islamic powers in the form of large Islamic kingdoms in the early 9th century. The existence of the Islamic powers of the Malacca Strait was revealed through a search of both primary and secondary documents. The results of this study prove that the emergence of Islamic powers in the Malacca Strait occurred through economic and cultural diplomacy, making it easier to strengthen the influence of Islamic ideology among the people along the Malacca Strait, both in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. This strong and widespread influence of the Islamic religion became the basis for the establishment of large kingdoms which formed governments based on Islamic political principles. The clash of economic, cultural, ideological and political interests continued between the Islamic forces of the Malacca Strait and the Western powers as new arrivals which ended with the collapse of the Islamic forces of the Malacca Strait.

Abstract

This study discusses the negotiation strategy used by the Government of Indonesia towards the Government of Singapore in establishing an extradition treaty. An extradition treaty is crucial for Indonesia to be able to try wanted fugitives who escaped to Singapore due to corruption cases. After decades of discussion, Indonesia and Singapore’s extradition treaty has finally reached an agreement in 2022 during Joko Widodo and Lee Hsien Loong’s leadership, due to preconditions given by both parties. This descriptive qualitative study uses the concept of collaborative negotiation strategy (win-win) developed by Lewicki, Barry & Saunders. The results of this research show that Indonesia’s negotiation strategy used during the leadership of President Joko Widodo used a collaborative (win-win) negotiation strategy, indicated by the fact that both parties could achieve the desired national interests. On one hand, Indonesia has established an extradition agreement, in addition to the Flight Information Region. On the other hand, Singapore has also established a Defense Cooperation Agreement as a precondition to the extradition agreement, in order to carry out military exercises in Indonesia’s territory. In conclusion, the negotiation strategy was successfully carried out by Indonesia, proven by the signing of the extradition treaty, which was further ratified by the People's Representative Council of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study is conducted to fill the gap of the literature regarding how a Multinational Corporation’s (MNC) corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, in this case Wilmar International can be used to stop the pressure from Non-Governmental Organizations’ (NGOs) advocacy, such as Greenpeace. The use of CSR is generally done as a form of corporate compliance with the government and responsibility to the local society. The researchers argue that Wilmar International’s CSR could be used to stop pressure from Greenpeace, although not for a long time. In this study, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative method to explore this case, with literature studies from various journal articles, as well as data from documents in the form of reports from Wilmar International and Greenpeace. After conducting an in-depth analysis of Wilmar’s various responses to Greenpeace, it has been proven that Wilmar fulfills all aspects of CSR. On the economic and philanthropic aspects, it is still not enough to stop the pressure from Greenpeace. Nevertheless, the legal and ethical aspects of Wilmar International’s CSR has successfully stopped Greenpeace’s pressure. This study found that when MNCs have implemented CSR tangibly with transparency, it could be used to stop the pressure of NGOs’ advocacy. Keywords: Wilmar International; Greenpeace; Corporate Social Responsibility; Multinational Corporation; Non-Governmental Organization.

Knowledge plays a strategic role as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, including in advancing the internationalization of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). In Gresik Regency, the transition toward global markets is shaped not only by digital literacy and managerial capacity but also by Islamic religious values that influence entrepreneurs’ awareness, motivation, and business orientation. This study aims to explore the subjective experiences of MSME actors in Srowo in integrating digital literacy and export knowledge with Islamic values in their internationalization efforts. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, focusing on lived experiences and reflections on the relationship between business practices, digital technology use, and religious beliefs. Phenomenological reduction was applied to identify the essence of collective experiences. Findings reveal that knowledge and religion are perceived as an integrated unity of professional endeavor and spiritual commitment. Digital literacy is understood not merely as a technical tool but as a moral responsibility to conduct halal, honest, and ethical business, reinforcing entrepreneurial resilience and identity in global markets.

Abstract

This study aims to describe Indonesia’s niche diplomacy during its chairmanship of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) forum in 2023. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by utilizing the niche diplomacy concept to describe Indonesia’s maritime foreign policy as a middle power. The result shows that Indonesia practiced niche diplomacy during its chairmanship of the AIS Forum in 2023 by enhancing its maritime foreign policy in three ways. Firstly, securing niche in maritime foreign policy by addressing the archipelagic and island states’ environmental problems, encouraging AIS participants to sign the Manado Declaration, and providing funding to establish a secretariat and support AIS Forum’s programs. Secondly, Indonesia obtains national interest by selecting the AIS Forum’s key issues in line with the Global Maritime Fulcrum’s pillars, conducting domestic policies to support the AIS Forum, and encouraging other states to do the same. Thirdly, contributing towards international agenda by striving to reach the Sustainable Development Goals 14, and preparing the AIS Forum to become an international organization. Hence, a middle power conducting niche diplomacy needs to select a low political issue to address through its domestic and foreign policies to gain national interest and benefit other states as well.
