Abstract

This study discusses mudharabah as one of the main instruments in the Islamic financial system and its relationship with Islamic economic philosophy. The concept of mudharabah is one of the main pillars in the Islamic economic system that prioritizes justice, honesty, and social responsibility in economic activities. Conceptually, mudharabah is understood as a cooperation contract between the capital owner (shahibul maal) and the business manager (mudharib) with the principle of profit sharing and risk sharing. From a normative perspective, this contract is in line with the principles of maqasid al-shari‘ah, especially in realizing justice, trustworthiness, and the economic welfare of the people. In practice, mudharabah has been widely used in modern Islamic financial institutions, especially in supporting the micro and small business sector, although its implementation still faces challenges in the form of moral hazard, information asymmetry, and regulatory limitations. This study uses a library research approach by analyzing classical and contemporary literature. The research results confirm that mudharabah is not only a financing instrument, but also a manifestation of Islamic philosophical values that are relevant to addressing global challenges, strengthening Islamic financial inclusion, and encouraging equitable and sustainable economic development for the people

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the role of digital payment systems in shaping a cashless society among university students, focusing on their experiences and perceptions in using digital payment platforms such as e-wallets, mobile banking, and QR-based payments. Method – The research employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with selected informants using purposive sampling and analyzed using thematic analysis, including coding, categorization, and theme development. Findings – The findings reveal that digital payment systems have become an essential part of students’ daily financial activities, significantly reducing reliance on cash transactions. The adoption is influenced by perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, trust, and social influence, with social influence emerging as the most dominant factor. The study also identifies both positive and negative behavioral impacts, including increased efficiency as well as impulsive spending tendencies, and notes that from an Islamic economic perspective, digital payment systems are considered permissible as long as they comply with Sharia principles. Implications – Theoretically, the study contributes to understanding the behavioral and religious dimensions of digital payment adoption among students. Practically, it implies that strengthening digital infrastructure, enhancing financial literacy, and ensuring Sharia compliance are crucial for supporting sustainable and inclusive cashless society development.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the role of PNM Mekaar Syariah in preventing the expansion of informal moneylending practices in rural communities, particularly among women micro entrepreneurs with limited access to formal financial services. It focuses on how Islamic microfinance mechanisms and group based empowerment reduce dependence on usurious lending. Method: A qualitative ethnographic approach was employed through participant observation, semi structured interviews, and field immersion within selected rural beneficiary groups. Data were thematically analyzed to capture patterns of financial behavior, social capital formation, and changes in borrowing practices. Results: The findings indicate that PNM Mekaar Syariah strengthens financial discipline, enhances entrepreneurial capacity, and builds trust based social capital through group financing structures. Beneficiaries demonstrate increased financial autonomy and a notable decline in reliance on informal moneylenders. Nevertheless, the study identifies the need for continuous financial education and digital payment integration to ensure long term sustainability. Implication: The study highlights Islamic microfinance as an effective community based strategy for preventing predatory lending and promoting sustainable financial inclusion in rural areas. Originality: This research offers ethnographic insights into Islamic microfinance by integrating social, behavioral, and religious dimensions in addressing informal moneylending practices in rural Indonesia.
