Abstract

This paper discusses the socio-cultural integration of coastal communities in Baurung Village, East Banggae District, Majene Regency. This paper aims to analyze the forms of socio-cultural integration of coastal communities in Baurung Village, East Banggae District, Majene Regency. In this paper, the author has the main focus of his study on social interaction, local cultural values and socio-cultural integration and adaptation between ethnic groups that live side by side in the area. This paper uses a qualitative approach using descriptive methods, data obtained through field observations conducted by researchers in the Baurung Village area. Then conducting in-depth interviews with the Baurung Village community and conducting documentation. The results of this study indicate that socio-cultural integration in Baurung Village can be seen from the existence of events or traditions such as the celebration of the fisherman's party (Mappasso), mutual cooperation (Sirondo-rondoi), social services, buying and selling activities and so on. From several of these activities, the involvement of several individual actors who interact with each other in a structured manner has a match with the structural functionalism theory put forward by Talcott Parson. The factors that drive socio-cultural integration are the adaptation of existing values that are still believed in by the community, tolerance between coastal community groups, and collective participation in social, cultural and religious activities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the dynamics of social interactions between boarding house residents and the local community in Majene Regency, West Sulawesi. The growth of boarding houses as a consequence of the increasing number of incoming students has created a new social space that brings together diverse cultural backgrounds. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study explores the experiences of boarding house students, boarding house owners, and the local community in building social relationships, adapting to local norms, and managing potential conflicts. The results show that social interactions occur across a broad spectrum, ranging from associative forms such as accommodation and cooperation to dissociative forms such as controversy and value conflicts. Factors influencing the dynamics of interactions include cultural background, communication intensity, the role of boarding house managers, community leaders, and the duration of students' stay. Social capital in the form of networks, trust, and norms has proven to be an important instrument in facilitating student adaptation while strengthening social cohesion with the local community. This study confirms that boarding houses function not only as temporary housing but also as social institutions that play a role in the process of cultural and social integration in Majene. These findings contribute to the sociological study of social interaction and social capital and provide a basis for local policies to manage boarding houses more inclusively.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the abundance of eel larvae in the coastal waters of Malunda, West Sulawesi Province. Sampling of eel larvae was conducted in the coastal waters of Malunda, West Sulawesi. A hand scoop net (seser) with a mesh size of 1 mm was used as the sampling gear. Sampling activities were carried out once a month at night during the new moon phase. The captured samples were placed in buckets containing river water equipped with an aerator and then transported alive to the Integrated Laboratory of Universitas Sulawesi Barat for identification and measurement of body length and weight. Water quality parameters, including salinity, pH, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS), were measured during each sampling event. Species identification was conducted using the Anal–Dorsal Vertebrae (ADV) key character method by counting the number of anodorsal vertebrae and measuring the anodorsal length. The results showed that the eel larvae found in the coastal waters of Malunda consisted of a single species, Anguilla marmorata. The specimens obtained had an anodorsal vertebrae count ranging from 14 to 18. The highest abundance of eel larvae was recorded in August. The environmental conditions of the Malunda coastal waters are still considered suitable for the survival and optimal growth of eel populations
