Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of short videos to improve students’ writing skills of narrative texts at the vocational high school. This study is categorized as classroom action research. The use of short videos helps students understand the generic structures of narrative texts. During learning processes, students are asked to analyze the narrative structures from the introductory to the conclusion paragraph. (Manalu & Tarigan & Sitopu & Silaban, 2021). In the first cycle, students demonstrated moderate improvement in writing narrative texts. However, issues such as limited vocabulary and incorrect use of tenses were still apparent. After analyzing these challenges during the reflection phase, additional activities were incorporated in the second cycle, including vocabulary-building exercises and focused grammar drills. By the end of the second cycle, the students showed substantial progress. The average writing score increased from 65 in the pre-test to 75 in the post-test of the first cycle, and further to 85 in the post-test of the second cycle. Moreover, students displayed enhanced creativity and engagement, which were evident in the originality and coherence of their stories. The use of short videos provided visual context, making it easier for students to generate ideas and structure their narratives effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan through the use of Canva in creating descriptive posters. Writing is a crucial skill in language learning, as it allows learners to express ideas and thoughts in written form. However, many students face difficulties in writing, especially in constructing descriptive texts. Common errors found include grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. This research employs a Classroom Action Research (CAR) method conducted in several cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection. Canva, a graphic design platform, is integrated as a learning medium to assist students in developing descriptive texts into visually engaging posters. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests as well as student questionnaires to assess their responses toward the use of Canva. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing skills, with the average score increasing from 65 in the pre-test to 78 in the post-test. Furthermore, students reported higher motivation and enthusiasm in the learning process. The use of Canva allowed students to be more creative, expand their vocabulary, and pay closer attention to language mechanics while writing. Therefore, Canva can serve as an effective tool to enhance English writing instruction in junior high schools.

Abstract

This research aimed at describing the implementation of Grammar Translation Method in teaching and learning English to the students of SMK Saraswati 3 Tabanan. The subjects of this research were two English teachers and 60 students. The data were collected by utilizing the techniques of observation, interview, and documentation. The data acquired were analysed qualitatively by using qualitative data analysis. The result of this research indicated that: (1) The use of the Grammar Translation Method is still often used, considering the students’ competence was still average in understanding the function of grammar’s rules and vocabulary mastery, particularly in reading and writing; (2) Bilingual teaching is carried out to improve students’ knowledge and skills; and (3)The students are required to be able to translate reading texts correctly and make sentences in correct grammar rather than fluency in language and communication. The conclusion of this research is that the implementation of the Grammar Translation Method is still used in teaching and learning to improve students’ competence in applying the function of grammar rules and vocabulary mastery, particularly in reading and writing. However, Grammar Translation Method prioritizes on applying the function of grammatical rules and improving vocabulary mastery than communication and pronunciation. Therefore, this method is recommended to be adapted by combining with other methods.

Abstract

The challenges faced by EFL students in oral communication, this study aimed to enhance their speaking skills through the implementation of individual narrative text presentation projects. The research involved 24 university students who were selected using simple random sampling. A mixed-methods design was employed, with a primary emphasis on quantitative data to measure the impact of the intervention and qualitative data to understand the students' experiences. Quantitative data were collected using speaking ability tests (pre-test and post-test), while qualitative data were gathered through participant observation. The findings revealed that the implementation of individual narrative text presentation projects significantly improved students' speaking skills, with a mean post-test score of 86.50, an increase of 16.40 from the previous mean pre-test score of 70.10. The implications of this study underscore the importance of actively and contextually integrating language skills into EFL learning, particularly through project-based activities that focus on oral communication practice, such as presentations. The results of this research recommend the use of narrative text presentation projects as an effective learning strategy to enhance the confidence and fluency of EFL students' speaking abilities.

Abstract

In learning a language there are four basic language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, there are three areas that play an important role in supporting these four language skills (Megawati, 2016). The three parts are: pronunciation, vocabulary (words) and punctuation pronunciation. Therefore, many students face obstacles in learning English. These difficulties are also experienced by children at SOS Children's Village Bali, so that in the end they have an impact on their interest in learning English. Seeing these situations and conditions, this is a reason to carry out Community Service because they really need it. The English learning activity in this service is called Fun English and aims to create a fun learning environment. The focus of this fun English activity is to improve reading and speaking skills. This PKM is carried out for children at SOS Children's Village Bali. The method used in this social service is the recitation method. The recitation method is a model of presenting teaching materials by giving assignments to students. The participants who took part were students in primary school and junior high school education backgrounds. The achievement of this PKM is an increase in participants' ability to say vocabulary correctly. Participants have understood how to pronounce punctuation marks correctly. The result of this activity is that participants' concentration and motivation increase, this is proven by the results of the activity evaluation in the post-test. In this way, participants also feel happy and do not feel awkward when participating in all the fun English activities at PKM.
