Abstract

Garcinia mangostana L. (mangosteen) is a plant that comes from the tropics and is very loved by the public because of its pleasant taste. It has anti-diabetic effects, wound treatment, diarrhea, skin anti-infection, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-tumorigenic effects. This study aims to determine the fingerprint profile of mangosteen seed extract and peel using variations of ethanol using FTIR and combined chemometrics with multivariate analysis methods. Mangosteen seeds and peels were extracted with a variety of solvents (ethanol 70%, and ethanol 96%) by maceration obtained 8 types of extracts. All extracts were analyzed through FTIR spectroscopy with KBr pellets and solvent methanol PA at wavelengths 400-4000 cm-1. Mangosteen peel and seed extracts have functional groups with fingerprint markers at wavelength positions 3414 cm-1 (O-H), 2964.59 cm-1 (C-H3), 2920.23 cm-1 (C-H2), and 2856.58 cm-1 (C-H2). Multivariate analysis showed loading plot of extract had normally distributed and 96% seed Bulukumba extract had a major effect on PC1 (0.424) and 96% ethanol peel Bulukumba extract (0.439). The plot score affected PC1 (20.1%) and PC2 (57.4%) with a similarity between 31.57-99.89% in the extracts. The correlation of each extract showed a very positive correlation with the equation (y = 0.9805x + 65.177; R² = 0.9926). The use of FTIR spectra in observing the fingerprint profile of mangosteen peel and seed extracts with ethanol variations and chemometric combinations is highly applicable and can be applied in the validation and study of the chemical components of plant extracts.

Abstract

Tamarind leaf (Tamarindus indica L.) is one of the forgotten plants that has potential as a medicine for burns based on its chemical compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. This study aims to determine the effect of giving the ethyl acetate fraction and the n-hexane fraction of tamarind leaves on the healing of burns in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The test was carried out using 3 rabbits for each type of treatment, namely burns and incision wounds. Each experimental animal was induced as many as 6 wounds on each back of the rabbit with the following treatments: Wound I (negative control), Wound II (bioplacenton gel), Wound III (1% n-hexane fraction), Wound IV (n-hexane fraction). 3% hexane, Wound V (1% ethyl acetate fraction) and Wound Vl (3% ethyl acetate fraction). The macroscopic observations observed included color, edema, wound diameter, scab formation and opening and epitalization. Both hexane and ethyl acetate fraction of tamarind leaf extract had activity as a burn healer at concentrations of 1% and 3%.The conclusion was that the ethyl acetate fraction of 3% tamarind leaf extract had the best activity among other treatments.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease whose prevalence continues to increase both in the world and developing countries, so it is said that diabetes mellitus is a problem for global public health. One of the receptors that play a role in stimulating insulin storage so that resistance does not occur is the PPARƔ receptor. The purpose of this study was to simulate the interaction of moonflower compounds with several proteins at the PPARƔ receptor in the design of antidiabetic drugs by molecular docking method. The docking results showed that all moonflower compounds could interact with the active site of PPARƔ. The ligands with the best interactions were indicated by compounds with the best interactions shown by compounds 27, compounds 29 and compounds 31 with binding energy values, respectively, namely, -8.03 kcal/mol, -6.85 kcal/mol, -8.20 kcal/mol. Meanwhile, Thiazolidinediones as a positive control showed G value of -9.71 kcal/mol. These results indicate that the compound T. diversifolia is predicted to have potential as antidiabetic therapy.

Abstract

Potential for Improving Memory in White Rats (Rattus norvegicus) Using Moringa Leaf Extract (Moringa oleifera) Using the Y Maze Method Memory decline is a disease of impaired brain function and cognitive decline characterized by changes in behavior, decreased memory, and difficulty in communicating. One of the causative factors is oxidative stress where the imbalance between the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and the body's antioxidant defense system, causes lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and changes in ROS that cause the death of brain neurons. Moringa leaf (Moringa oleifera) is a plant that contains high antioxidants, namely flavonoids. These compounds provide neuroprotective effects on the brain due to oxidative stress that causes memory decline. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of Moringa leaf extract on memory improvement in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) using the Y-Maze Labyrinth method. Experimental animals were divided into 5 groups, namely negative control (Na-CMC), Gingko Biloba, and treatment groups given moringa leaf extract at a dose of 50 mg / kgBB, 100 mg / kgBB and 200 mg / kgBB. The rats were first induced with Hyosin-Butylbrimide at a dose of 1.5 mg/KgBB in ip for 10 days. The administration of the extract was carried out for 18 days with the observed parameters including the time required for rats to find food in the Y-maze maze tool.  The observation data obtained were then analyzed using the Mann Whitney test. The results showed that the ethanol extract of moringa leaves has a memory enhancing activity. Memory enhancing activity was shown at a dose of 200 mg/kgBB. ABSTRAK Penurunan daya ingat merupakan penyakit gangguan fungsi otak dan penurunan kognitif yang ditandai dengan perubahan perilaku, penurunan memori, serta kesulitan dalam berkomunikasi. Salah satu faktor penyebabnya adalah stress oksidatif dimana ketidakseimbangan antara produksi Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) dengan sistem pertahanan antioksidan tubuh, sehingga menyebabkan peroksidasi lipid, oksidasi protein, perubahan ROS yang menyebabkan kematian neuron otak. Daun Kelor (Moringa oleifera) merupakan tanaman yang mengandung antioksidan tinggi yaitu flavonoid. Senyawa tersebut memberikan efek neuroprotektif pada otak akibat stres oksidatif yang menyebabkan penurunan daya ingat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui aktivitas ekstrak Daun Kelor terhadap peningkatan daya ingat pada tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus) menggunakan metode Labirin Y-Maze. Hewan coba dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok yaitu kontrol negatif (Na-CMC), Gingko Biloba, kelompok perlakuan yang diberikan ekstrak Daun Kelor dengan dosis 50 mg/KgBB, 100 mg/KgBB dan 200 mg/KgBB. Terlebih dahulu tikus diinduksi dengan Hyosin-Butylbrimide dengan dosis 1,5 mg/KgBB secara ip selama 10 hari. Pemberian ekstrak dilakukan selama 18 hari dengan parameter yang diamati meliputi waktu yang dibutuhkan tikus untuk menemukan makanan pada alat labirin Y-maze.  Data hasil pengamatan yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji Mann Whitney. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol Daun Kelor mempunyai aktivitas peningkat daya ingat. Aktivitas peningkat daya ingat ditunjukkan pada dosis 200 mg/kgBB.

Abstract

Salah satu wilayah di kabupaten Takalar yang masih memanfaatkan obat tradisional sebagai alternative pengobatan adalah Desa atani. Penggunaan obat tradisional di wilayah ini berdasarkan prinsip turun temurun, atau resep nenek moyang, adat-istiadat, kepercayaan, atau kebiasaan setempat. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan kepada masyarakat Desa Patani tentang penggunaan obat tradisional. Kegiatan dilakukan secara daring maupun luring dengan menggunakan metode ceramah, diskusi, pemutaran video pengolahan obat tradisional serta pembagian buku tanaman obat tradisional. Materi penyuluhan yang diberikan meliputi pengertian obat tradisional, petunjuk umum penggunaan obat tradisional dan pemberian contoh ramuan obat tradisional seperti daun kelor, daun sidaguri, jahe merah, jahe, sambiloto dan sirih. Hasil Kegiatan pengabdian telah memberikan peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan dari masyarakat tentang cara pemamfaatan tanaman tradisional.

Abstract

Curcumin, a dietary polyphenol derived from turmeric's rhizome, exhibits a range of pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been investigated for its therapeutic potential in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to its ability to inhibit nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), modulate oxidative stress, impact cell viability, and regulate gene expression. However, most studies have been limited to in vitro conditions. To address this gap, we conducted in vivo experiments using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to explore the antioxidant activities and biological significance of curcumin. Several parameters were assessed using different assays, including curcumin toxicity assay, fly survival, locomotor response to curcumin treatment (with or without cigarette smoke), trypan blue staining, larval crawling assays, and gene expression analysis. Our data revealed no significant differences in toxicity and locomotor tests across various curcumin concentrations. D. melanogaster tolerated curcumin at concentrations of 0.5 µM, 5 µM, 50 µM, and 500 µM, suggesting its safety without negatively impacting locomotor. Furthermore, curcumin at 5 µM extended the lifespan of D. melanogasterexposed to cigarette smoke, while reversing the negative effects of smoke exposure on gut cell viability and larval locomotor activity. In conclusion, curcumin administration appeared safe for D. melanogaster, with potential benefits for longevity and locomotory function. These findings support the idea that curcumin possesses in vivo antioxidant properties and may serve as a promising pharmacological agent. However, further study is needed to explore its potential applications in human health and disease management, particularly in the context of COPD.
