Abstract

In the era of globalization and rapid technological advancement, the healthcare sector in Indonesia faces various challenges, including the need for innovation and more effective services. Medical students possess significant potential to contribute to creating relevant solutions for public health issues. However, many of them lack adequate entrepreneurial skills. Conventional teaching methods often fall short in providing students with the practical skills necessary. Therefore, the implementation of Project-based Learning (PjBL) in entrepreneurship courses becomes essential. Through PjBL, students not only learn theory but also engage directly in projects related to current health issues. This allows them to develop practical skills such as market research and business planning. The program involved 119 first-semester medical students, beginning with a Pre-Test to assess their initial knowledge about Community Service, followed by presentation sessions and a Post-Test to evaluate their understanding. Results showed that 60% of students were interested in entrepreneurship within the healthcare sector; 52.5% recognized its importance; however, 70% still lacked an understanding of business concepts in healthcare. A significant increase was observed after the Post-Test was conducted. The application of PjBL needs to be conducted continuously to further enhance students' knowledge about entrepreneurship. Abstract

ABSTRACT Hypertension is a chronic elevation of systemic arterial pressure beyond a level that may damage the endothelium. Individuals with hypertension typically demonstrate increased levels of blood glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid. Hyperlipidemia, age, and hypertension exhibit a complicated interplay that profoundly influences cardiovascular risk. Inadequate management of blood pressure and insufficient public awareness regarding the early detection of metabolic syndrome continue to significantly worsen the global prevalence of cardiovascular disease. This community service initiative assessed blood pressure and blood chemistry to identify early risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Olak Kemang Health Centre, affiliated with Jambi University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, conducts community service projects. Patients of the Regular Olak Kemang Health Center engaged in this research. Following an 8-hour fasting period, all individuals underwent assessments of their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, glucose, and uric acid concentrations. This study evaluated the blood pressure and clinical chemistry of 44 subjects. Seven patients (15.9%) exhibited pre-hypertension, twelve (27.3%) presented with stage 1 hypertension, and eleven (25%) were diagnosed with stage 2 hypertension. The majority of individuals with hypertension were aged 46 to 55 years. In the community service, 4 participants exhibited elevated uric acid levels, 9 had elevated glucose levels, and 7 had elevated cholesterol levels. Eight patients with stage 1 hypertension exhibited higher blood chemistry levels. Considering that glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid are associated with cardiovascular disease risk, it is advisable for patients with hypertension to have their levels regularly monitored. Their connection highlights the need for integrated management strategies to improve patient care and prevent complications.  Keywords: Elderly, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Hyperglicemia, Hyperuricemia. Abstract

Indonesians traditionally utilize tamarillo for its various health benefits. However, the lipophilic compounds it contains have the potential to cause hepatotoxicity and increase transaminase enzymes, namely SGPT and SGOT enzymes. The study aimed to test the toxicity of tamarillo ethanol extract acutely on SGPT and SGOT levels in male Wistar white rats. The study used a post-test only experimental design with a control group design. Fifteen rats were randomly divided into five treatment groups. Group K1 as a control was given distilled water, group K2 was given paracetamol 2.5 g/kgBW, while groups K3, K4, and K5 were each given tamarillo ethanol extract in single doses of 200, 400, and 600 mg/kgBW. After 24 hours, rat blood serum samples were taken through the orbital sinus to measure SGPT and SGOT levels using the UV test method. The results showed that the average SGPT levels increased in the K2 group by 295.34±13.31 U/L and K5 by 93.67±19.03 U/L. Meanwhile, the average SGOT levels increased in the K2 group by 874±25.06 U/L, K4 by 164.67±7.57 U/L and K5 by 213.34±13.50 U/L. The One-Way ANOVA test showed a significance value of p=0.000 in the K2 and K5 groups for SGPT, while SGOT in the K2, K4 and K5 groups. Administration of tamarillo ethanol extract can cause liver damage at doses of 400 mg/kgBW and 600 mg/kgBW.

Abstract

Duku peel is an underutilized agricultural byproduct in Talang Duku Village, a major center of duku production, and is commonly discarded as waste. The community’s heavy reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides presents environmental and health risks, compounded by limited knowledge regarding the processing of agricultural waste into value-added products. This community service program aimed to empower the “A. Khalik Duku Plantation” Farmers Group by converting duku peel waste into a high-value plant-based insecticide in the form of aromatherapy candles, thereby fostering a new generation of creative healthpreneurs. The program applied a participatory community empowerment approach through education, hands-on training, and continuous mentoring. The stages included needs assessment, production and business management training, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test data analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Chi-Square tests. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge (P < 0.001), with the median score increasing from 70% to 80% and the number of participants achieving the ≥80% competency threshold rising from 13 to 49. Furthermore, the program successfully facilitated the production of insect-repellent aromatherapy candles and the establishment of the “KUB Duku Lestari” Joint Business Group, which sold more than 50 units within the first three months. In conclusion, this program effectively transformed agricultural waste into a valuable product, promoted sustainable entrepreneurship, and contributed to improving community welfare. It is recommended that the business group standardize product packaging to enhance market competitiveness and that future studies focus on optimizing extraction techniques to improve product efficacy.
