Abstract

This activity was motivated by the relatively low level of understanding and practical skills among farmers and community members in producing and utilizing botanical pesticides in agricultural practices. The primary objective of the training was to equip participants, particularly students affiliated with the Unsulbar Farming Club (UFC), with relevant knowledge and competencies. The training was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of West Sulawesi. The training employed a demonstration-based method, which involved direct practical engagement and oral explanations at each stage of the botanical pesticide production process. The main ingredients used during the training included papaya leaves, neem leaves, and distilled water (aqua distillate). A total of 60 student participants attended the training, demonstrating a high level of enthusiasm and active engagement throughout the material delivery and practical demonstrations. The overall activity successfully enhanced participants’ awareness and technical skills related to the preparation and application of botanical pesticides. This outcome was reflected in the assessment results, where 93% of participants (56 out of 60) achieved scores ranging from 65 to 85, corresponding to performance levels from Good (B-) to Excellent (A). Meanwhile, 6.67% of participants (4 individuals) received scores categorized as C and D.

Abstract

Katokkon Chili is an important local variety in Mamasa, West Sulawesi, which frequently exhibits yellow mosaic and yellow curl symptoms. These symptoms are strongly suspected to be associated with viral infections, particularly those in the genera Begomovirus and Potyvirus. This study aimed to molecularly identify viruses causing yellow curl symptoms in Katokkon Chili plants. Symptomatic leaf samples were collected purposively from 14 locations in Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi, followed by molecular detection and identification using universal Begomovirus and Potyvirus primers and sequencing analysis. Detection and identification results showed that chili plants yielded 912 bp DNA fragments with SPG1/SPG2 primers, confirming viral identity as Pepper Yellow Leaf Curl Indonesia Virus (PYLCIV) and demonstrating >98% homology with PYLCIV isolates from South Sulawesi. This study reports the first occurrence of PYLCIV in the Katokkon Chili variety in West Sulawesi and expands the host range of PYLCIV among chili varieties in Indonesia. These findings are important as a foundation for developing viral disease control strategies for chili plants in West Sulawesi.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the seaweed farming groups with strong development potential is the Akbar Cultivation Group, located in Lantora Village, Polewali District. This group has been operating for approximately seven years and is part of a seaweed production centre in Polewali Mandar Regency. The partner group’s main challenge lies in the production process. All stages of cultivation—from installing stretch ropes, maintenance, and inspection of farming installations to pulling ropes and harvesting seaweed—are still carried out manually without mechanical assistance. This condition requires a large workforce and relatively long working hours and poses higher safety risks, especially when the weather and sea wave conditions are unfavourable. Based on these circumstances, an empowerment program is needed to comprehensively address the group’s problems, from production to marketing. The implementation method uses a participatory and demonstration approach, which actively involves participants and provides hands-on practice in equipment operation. As a result of this program, 15 participants showed high enthusiasm during the training activities, and there was a significant improvement in their understanding and skills related to aquatic weed harvester technology and digital marketing. Prior to the training, participants’ knowledge and skills, measured through a pre-test questionnaire, averaged only 32.15%, with a score of 1.87 on a scale of 5. However, after the training and post-test evaluation, their knowledge and skills increased to an average of 88.00%, with a mean score of 4.4 out of 5. These data indicate that the participants’ knowledge and skills improved by 55.85% after the program.
