Abstract

The Ratu Boko Palace site is an 8th-century archaeological site with high historical, cultural, and spiritual value. However, the presentation of information at this site is still limited, so it has not yet built a deep interpretive experience for visitors. This study aims to (1) identify visitor profiles and perceptions, (2) map the routes and visual quality of viewpoints, and (3) evaluate the presentation of information in order to formulate a strategy for interpreting the site's architectural elements. The research method used mixed methods through questionnaires to 22 respondents, qualitative interviews, and spatial analysis using GPS Maps Camera. The analytical framework refers to Tilden's principles of cultural heritage interpretation and the UNESCO-ICOMOS conservation concept to ensure alignment with preservation standards. The results show that the majority of visitors are aged 31-40 years old with an interest in history and culture. The visit route is centered on the main gate, while other elements such as the pendapa, keputren, and cave are rarely visited. The information media was only rated “adequate” in terms of accuracy, readability, and relevance, indicating that the interpretation is still descriptive and lacks digital elements. These findings confirm the gap between visitor needs and the existing interpretation system. The study recommends the development of digital media such as QR codes, audio guides, and virtual tours to enrich the interpretive experience and support the preservation of cultural heritage sites.

Abstract

Rapid urbanization has intensified mental health challenges in cities, highlighting the growing importance of urban open spaces as perceived relaxation environments. Although relaxation qualities have been widely examined, conventional assessments frequently generalize user characteristics, overlooking the influence of baseline mental health. Consequently, environmental literature often assumes uniform restorative outcomes, neglecting how psychological distress varies across genders. This study investigates gender differences in perceived relaxation of urban open spaces, with a particular focus on psychological distress. This research conduct a cross-sectional study with a semi-structured online questionnaire involving 101 adult participants. The data of psychological distress was assessed using the World Health Organization's Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Relevant environmental elements were identified through word-frequency analysis on semi-open-ended description, and then examined using analysis of variance and correspondence analysis. The results indicate that psychological distress has a more direct association with perceived relaxation than gender. While psychological distress influences how individuals perceive the experience, gender differences shape how those experiences are enacted. This study also reveal that natural greenery and coherent spatial design act as primary relaxation elements, whereas facilities and social interaction serve as secondary elements, utilized differently across gender. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating users' internal conditions into the design process to enhance the relaxation potential of urban open spaces. Design approaches must move beyond the uniform assumptions that often characterize current practice in order to create inclusive and relaxing urban environments that support everyday mental well-being.

Abstract: Barong Temple, a Hindu cultural heritage site in Yogyakarta, faces accessibility challenges that affect the tourist experience, particularly in terms of navigation and the availability of tourist route information. This study aims to analyse the factors that hinder tourist route accessibility at Barong Temple and to design optimisation strategies through the development of tourist maps in physical and digital formats. The study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach to Barong Temple. The analytical approach uses a descriptive-exploratory method, focusing on wayfinding strategies and tourist accessibility. Data collection was conducted through literature review, observation, and interviews with Barong Temple managers to obtain professional perspectives on the temple. The research findings identified the lack of directional signs, tourist spot information, and supporting facilities as the main challenges. The proposed strategies include physical maps with clear visual designs and interactive digital maps based on applications or QR codes, covering main routes, photo spots, and facilities such as parking areas. The implementation of these strategies is expected to enhance accessibility, tourist satisfaction, and visitor numbers, while supporting cultural preservation and sustainable site management. Recommendations include the implementation of tourist maps, regular maintenance, and evaluation of their impact on tourist experiences. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The persistent existence of the Keraton Yogyakarta has fundamentally catalyzed the growth of the Kraton District as a premier destination for cultural heritage tourism. Ensuring the long-term sustainability of this historic precinct necessitates a strategic prioritization of its inherited cultural values. A primary manifestation of the Sultanate’s historical power is the noble residential typology known as the Dalem. Both Dalem Mangkubumen and Dalem Kaneman serve as quintessential heritage assets that have endured by dynamically adapting to contemporary urban contexts to facilitate relevant communal activities. These structures possess an intrinsic value that reinforces their significance within the collective meaning-making processes across successive generations and historical narratives. This research investigates the intrinsic dimensions of the inhabitants’ sense of place by analyzing two primary constructs: place meaning, articulated through empirical experience and spatial satisfaction, and place attachment, expressed through self-identity and functional dependence. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the study synthesizes field surveys including systematic observation and in-depth interviews with comprehensive literature reviews. The findings reveal that the Dalem maintains its intrinsic vitality through embedded cultural codes that link the residence to the broader Keraton ecosystem, manifested through the interrelation of meaning and attachment. Ultimately, socio-cultural practices function as the essential mechanisms for reproducing a sense of place and ensuring the intergenerational transfer of these intrinsic values.
