Abstract

Degenerative diseases arise when age increases due to the weakening of the body's physiological condition. The purpose of this study was to measure glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol levels in residents of Segunung Village to improve lifestyles and quality of life. As many as 110 residents of Segunung Village were used as subjects in this cross-sectional study. Glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol levels were measured using Point of Care Testing (POCT). A cut-off value of <200 was used to define high cholesterol levels. Only cholesterol levels showed an increase when compared with reference values, while glucose and uric acid levels were normal. Interestingly glucose was significantly correlated with age (r=0.309, p=0.001). The approach using POCT describes the overall condition of Segunung villagers and can be used as a basis for glucose, uric acid, and cholesterol screening tests.

Abstract

Leukemia is a hematological malignancy characterized by abnormal proliferation of hematopoietic precursor cells in the bone marrow and an increased number of abnormal white blood cells in peripheral circulation. Early detection is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality rates, one of which can be achieved through the use of hematology analyzers that display scattergrams. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between scattergram patterns from the Sysmex XN-1000 Hematology Analyzer and peripheral blood smear findings in leukemia patients. A descriptive cross-sectional design with total sampling was employed, involving 13 leukemia patients who underwent complete blood count using the Sysmex XN-1000 and peripheral blood smear examination at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar, from March to May 2019. Data were analyzed descriptively based on the distribution of gender, age, type of leukemia, laboratory results, and scattergram patterns. The results showed that most patients were male (84.6%), the most common age group was 21–40 years (38.5%), and the most frequent leukemia types were Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (46.2%) and Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (46.2%). Scattergram analysis revealed distinct patterns for each leukemia type: predominance of high-fluorescence lymphocytes with an inverted comma pattern in ALL, variable-sized myeloid blasts overlapping with granulocytes and monocytes in AML, and granulocytic dominance with immature granulocyte values >10% in CML. These scattergram patterns were consistent with peripheral blood smear findings, supporting their role as an early indicator of hematologic abnormalities. In conclusion, scattergrams from the Sysmex XN-1000 have potential as a rapid and informative screening tool prior to microscopic confirmation in leukemia cases.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by a disruption of the body's ability to produce insulin. The bark of the black mulberry stem has a high chemical content of anthocyanins, phenolics, flavanoids and has been known to have many properties. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of ethanol extract of black mulberry stem bark (Morus nigra L.) on reducing blood glucose levels in male mice (Mus musculus). This research is included in the laboratory-scale experimental type of research. The simplicia of the black mulberry stem is macerated then produces a dry extract. Antidiabetic testing was carried out by dividing 24 mice into 6 groups, namely a healthy control group, a positive control group (glibenchlamid), a negative control group (Na CMC 0.5%), and a 10% b/v dose extract group, a 15% b/v dose extract group, a 20% b/v dose extract group, which was induced with an allocation of 130 mg/kg BB. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, ethanol extract of black mulberry stem bark at a dose of 20% b/v has the highest effect of reducing blood glucose levels with a percentage decrease of 33.51%, compared to doses of 10% and 15%, showing a percentage decrease of 5.51% and 2.36%.
