Abstract

This research aims to identify students' difficulties in understanding Group Isomorphism Theorem material and find effective solutions to improve understanding of this material. The background to this research is based on the observation that the Group Isomorphism Theorem is a complex concept in group theory, which often becomes an obstacle for students in achieving in-depth understanding. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection methods through interviews and literature study. The data analysis technique used is descriptive statistical data analysis. The research results showed that students experienced several difficulties in understanding the Group Isomorphism Theorem material. These difficulties include: understanding how to prove the two theorems, understanding the symbols in the theorem, understanding the axioms used to determine whether a structure is a group or not, lack of understanding of the material as a whole, and the lack of references read. Several other common difficulties were also identified. To overcome these difficulties, this research proposes several effective solutions. These solutions include: the use of visual aids in learning, the use of concrete examples, the use of simple notation, the development of interactive teaching materials, the application of guidance and project-based learning, the use of appropriate references, and the application of continuous evaluation. The results of this research show that the level of difficulty in understanding Group Isomorphism Theorem material is still very high among students, but the proposed solutions can help improve their understanding significantly.

Abstract

This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to describe the types and causes of student errors in solving algebraic structure questions on cyclic group material using the Newman procedure. The research subjects were 8 6th semester students who were chosen randomly. The research results showed that student errors included reading errors (12.5%), understanding the questions (37.5%), processing skills (37.5%), writing the final answer (25%) and no errors were found in the transformation. The causes of errors are inaccuracy in reading the questions, not understanding the questions, not knowing how to solve them, and not being careful in calculations. The mistake that often occurs is not writing down what is known and asked, thereby affecting the final result or conclusion. This error analysis can help identify the location of errors and become the basis for improving learning by educators.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify student errors in solving Permutation problems. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of the study were 4 6th semester students of the Mathematics Education study program at Medan State University. Data collection is done by providing problems or problems. Data is analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation and conclusions. The results showed that the difficulty of learning mathematics in college was caused by weak mastery of aspects of complicated and complex mathematical concepts. Drawing these conclusions is important as an answer to the research question
