Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of infidelity within families constitutes a significant social issue, as it not only undermines spousal relationships but also leaves enduring psychological wounds on children who witness it, particularly women entering early adulthood when they begin to establish romantic relationships. This study focuses on how early adult women interpret their experiences of witnessing paternal infidelity and the implications of these experiences for trust, commitment, emotional dynamics, and partner selection processes. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed to explore the subjective experiences of three early adult women aged 20-22 who encountered such events during adolescence. The findings indicate that these experiences are interpreted as traumatic, giving rise to anxiety, fear of betrayal, and difficulties in developing trust, while simultaneously fostering heightened vigilance and selectivity in choosing partners, with an emphasis on loyalty, communication, and emotional security. The emerging psychological dynamics include trust issues, a tendency to avoid conflict, and a strong need for emotional stability, which are addressed through conscious efforts to build healthier relationships characterized by open communication and effective emotional regulation. The study concludes that the subjective meaning-making of paternal infidelity plays a crucial role in shaping relational patterns, perceptions of romantic relationships, and partner selection decisions among early adult women. The novelty of this research lies in its emphasis on the meaning-making dimension, which not only reveals psychological impacts but also highlights resilience and the transformation of traumatic experiences into a foundation for more adaptive and constructive relationships.

Abstract

This study aims to understand deeply the experiences of children in using profanity at the Community X in Padang City, West Sumatra. The phenomenon of children using offensive language is a complex issue influenced by multiple environmental factors. Employing a qualitative approach with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study involved three child participants aged 11 years, namely Vino, Manda, and Kevin, who are actively engaged in the community. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted at the community site. The findings reveal three distinct patterns: Vino is aware that his behavior is inappropriate but feels powerless due to social group pressure; Manda demonstrates the highest moral awareness and the most concrete motivation for change, shaped by a painful relational experience; Kevin exhibits complete normalization of profanity with an absence of moral conflict and notably low empathy. All three participants were exposed to profanity from similar sources, namely family, physical environment, peers, and digital content, yet constructed meaning from those experiences very differently. The study confirms that normalization of profanity in children is not merely a character issue but a product of complex social ecology. Effective intervention requires a holistic approach simultaneously addressing family, peer group, and community dimensions.

Abstract

The phenomenon of cyberloafing in online lectures has become an issue that can affect students’ academic engagement, particularly in the context of digital learning. Although this issue has received attention in educational studies and academic psychology, research that specifically examines the relationship between cyberloafing and student engagement among students who actively participate in online lectures still needs to be strengthened. This study aims to analyze the relationship between cyberloafing and student engagement among students undergoing online lectures. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design, involving 84 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a cyberloafing scale and a student engagement scale, and were then analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment correlation. The results showed that the level of cyberloafing was in the low-to-moderate category, with a mean score of M = 53.01 from a theoretical range of 20–100, whereas student engagement was in the moderate-to-high category, with a mean score of M = 76.52 from a theoretical range of 24–120. The correlation analysis results indicated a significant negative relationship between cyberloafing and student engagement, with r = -0.422 and p = 0.000. These findings indicate that the higher students’ involvement in non-academic activities during online lectures, such as accessing social media or playing games, the lower their engagement in learning. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of controlling cyberloafing to maintain students’ academic engagement. The implications of this study suggest that lecturers and educational institutions should design more interactive online learning and encourage students’ self-regulation so that learning engagement can be maintained.
