Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia reports approximately 540,000 HIV cases according to UNAIDS data, with rural adolescents experiencing significant knowledge gaps regarding HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention. Educational interventions are crucial for addressing these deficits, particularly in remote areas with limited healthcare information access. This research to evaluate the effectiveness of socialization interventions on HIV/AIDS knowledge among rural adolescents in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental pre-post study design was conducted among 47 adolescents aged 10-17 years in Loa Ulung Village, East Kalimantan. The intervention utilized leaflets and interactive two-way discussions covering HIV/AIDS transmission modes and prevention strategies. Data collection employed a validated 10-item questionnaire administered pre- and post-intervention. Statistical analysis included Shapiro-Wilk normality testing and Wilcoxon signed-rank test for non-parametric comparisons. Pre-intervention knowledge scores averaged 7.43 (SD=1.500), increasing to 7.81 (SD=1.715) post-intervention. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed no statistically significant difference (p=0.128), with a normalized gain score of 0.14 indicating low effectiveness. Persistent misconceptions included: 63.8% incorrectly believing all HIV-infected individuals develop AIDS, 23.4% thinking HIV transmits through sharing utensils, and 17.0% believing shared toilets cause transmission. Single-session educational interventions demonstrated limited effectiveness in improving HIV/AIDS knowledge among rural adolescents. Future programs should incorporate age-appropriate, interactive methodologies with extended duration and follow-up sessions for optimal outcomes in rural Indonesian settings.

Abstract

Background: Dengue fever remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, with transmission closely associated with the distribution and abundance of Aedes mosquitoes. Entomological surveillance using ovitraps is an effective method for monitoring mosquito populations and identifying areas at risk of dengue transmission. Purpose: This study aimed to identify Aedes mosquito species and assess mosquito breeding activity using the Ovitrap Index (OI) in Lempake Subdistrict, Samarinda, East Kalimantan. Methods: A descriptive entomological study was conducted using 98 ovitraps placed in indoor and outdoor environments across eight observation sites. Ovitraps were monitored for seven consecutive days, and larvae obtained from positive ovitraps were identified in the laboratory. Mosquito breeding activity was evaluated using the Ovitrap Index, while differences in larval abundance between indoor and outdoor ovitraps were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: A total of 22 positive ovitraps were identified, yielding 288 Aedes larvae comprising Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The overall Ovitrap Index was 24.57%, corresponding to Level 3 (Moderate Risk) according to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department classification. RT 11 and RT 22 exhibited the highest Ovitrap Index values, indicating greater mosquito breeding activity. Although outdoor ovitraps collected more larvae than indoor ovitraps, no statistically significant difference in larval abundance was observed between the two environments (U = 28.50, p = 0.746). Conclusion: These findings indicate that both indoor and outdoor environments contribute to Aedes breeding and highlight the importance of routine ovitrap surveillance, targeted vector control, and community-based environmental management to strengthen dengue prevention in urban settings.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of medical entomology learning in preclinical students through comparative analysis of pretest and posttest results using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The research hypothesis states there is a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores after medical entomology learning. The research model uses a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The theory applied is competency-based learning evaluation concepts in medical education. Research inputs include medical entomology materials covering definitions, vector insect classification, morphology, diagnosis, vector identification, disease control, and the role of entomology in medicine. The research method employs purposive sampling technique with a structured questionnaire instrument of 10 multiple-choice questions. The sample consists of 106 preclinical students from the 2023 cohort taking medical entomology courses. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with SPSS version 21 software and 95% confidence level. Results show significant differences between pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05), with 83 students experiencing increased posttest scores compared to pretest. The conclusion demonstrates that medical entomology learning methods are effective in improving preclinical students' understanding of arthropods as disease vectors. This research provides empirical evidence that medical entomology learning successfully achieves the established learning objectives for preclinical students.
