Abstract

Climate change is an important educational issue that contributes to sustainable development. Students in urban areas play an important role as key contributors in mitigating the worsening climate change. This activity aims to increase the understanding of climate change among junior high school students in urban areas. The method used is a classical face-to-face approach with socialization and games using climate flashcards to convey information related to climate change. The evaluation results showed that the students' average knowledge of climate change reached 74.3%, but there was a lower understanding, namely 34.6%, related to adaptation and mitigation efforts. This finding shows that although the students' knowledge level is quite high, a comprehensive understanding of climate change is still lacking. Through this training, an increase in students' understanding of 93% was recorded, indicating that the socialization and game method using climate flashcards was effective in improving students' comprehensive knowledge of climate change. Therefore, this "understanding of climate change" training can be an effective model for climate change education for students

Abstract

This study portrays the roles of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in the mitigation of natural hazards. Menoreh Hill in Kulon Progo experienced more than 200 landslides in 2022 and its communities implemented TEK to mitigate them. Hence, this research quantitatively analyzes the role of agriculture-related TEK, especially those applied in hilly areas, to support household resilience to natural hazards. Authors surveyed 106 farm households and interviewed eight key informants in Banjararum and Sidoharjo Villages, Kalibawang and Samigaluh Sub-districts, Kulon Progo Regency, D.I. Yogyakarta. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression. The descriptive statistics showed that farmers in both villages are highest in practicing alley cropping and integrated farming, while also applying mixed cropping, multiple cropping and locally based planting schedule (pranata mangsa). From binary logistic regression, authors found that TEK practices of multiple cropping, alley cropping and pranata mangsa support farm household resilience to natural hazards, especially landslides. The TEK practices serve as sources of buffer and adaptation capacity in the development of farm household resilience. Interestingly, mixed cropping and membership in farmer groups tend to weaken resilience, as mixed cropping often complicates the recovery efforts in the farmlands, and farmers’ groups are not conditioned to act promptly during hazards or disasters. While TEK has been proven to take roles in the mitigation and adaptation to natural hazards, there is a need to integrate scientific knowledge to improve its optimum benefits.

Abstract

Processing agricultural waste into value-added products is an important step in supporting sustainable agriculture. One of the wastes that has great potential to be processed is tobacco stem waste, which is often considered as waste without value. This educational activity aims to provide knowledge and skills to farmers in processing tobacco stem waste into liquid organic fertilizer. This education is carried out through a participatory approach, involving counseling, technical demonstrations, and direct practice. The results of the activity showed that participants were able to understand the importance of waste management in supporting agricultural sustainability. Participants also succeeded in practicing the process of processing tobacco stem waste into liquid organic fertilizer, which includes shredding, fermentation using local microorganisms, and packaging the final product. The positive impacts of this activity include increasing farmer awareness of waste management, reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, and cost efficiency in their farming systems. In addition, the application of liquid organic fertilizer from tobacco stems can also increase soil fertility naturally and support environmental conservation efforts. However, there are several challenges in implementing this activity, such as the lack of supporting facilities and the need for further assistance to ensure the sustainability of technology adoption by farmers. Overall, this educational activity has a positive impact on improving farmer skills and innovative waste management, while supporting more environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Bantul Regency is one of the central areas of organic farming in the Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta Province. However, its development has slowed down and often ends with a switch back to conventional farming systems. This study aims to determine how motivation influences the willingness to continue (WTC) to continue organic farming in Bantul Regency. The location in Bantul Regency was purposively selected based on the potential for organic farming development, using non-probability techniques we used questionnaires to collect data among 42 participants and in-depth interviews with three key informants. The ERG theory is used as an approach to complement three important variables, namely existence, relatedness, and growth, then analysed using PLS-SEM. These findings indicate that farmers' decisions to continue (WTC) organic farming are influenced not only by fulfilling basic needs or incentives (existence) but also by their psychosocial drive (growth). Meanwhile, external influences (relatedness) are not significant in motivating farmers to sustain organic farming practices. Therefore, the government should look after individual drives more than other factors and start to improve their service performance to give a better impression towards the farmers for support the success of organic farming

Abstract

The success of the farming system supports the development of Indonesian agribusiness. One of the determinants of the success of farming is the managerial ability of farmers in making decisions. The managerial ability of farmers is shown by one of the abilities in carrying out farming records. However, based on the conditions in the field, it shows that the majority of farmers do not have the knowledge and ability. The purpose of this community service activity is to carry out farm recording training to improve the managerial ability. This community service activity was carried out in Gudangharjo Village, Paranggupito District. Participants in this activity were representatives of farmer groups with a total of 25 participants. The activity began with a pre-test, then socialization and training, and ended with an evaluation through a post-test. The results of this community service activity have proven to be able to improve the managerial ability of farmers. This can be seen from the results of the evaluation related to farmers' awareness of the function of recording farming businesses by (87%) and farmers' willingness to implement recording as an important (74%). Furthermore, the farmers have increased understanding after participating in the training, as indicated by an increase in indicators related to the importance of recording costs in farming (68%), increased knowledge in distinguishing between fixed and variable costs (58%), and understanding the ability to read farming records (45%). So that the results of the farming recording training can help improve the managerial abilities of farmers.
