Abstract

This classroom action research was intended to enhance students' skills and motivation in writing report texts by implementing the Venn-diagram strategy. Twenty-one students failing to achieve the passing grade level of scores on their writing skills at the ninth grade of an Islamic secondary school in East Java Indonesia became the subjects of the study. The observation checklist, field notes, questionnaires, and writing test were used to collect data through implementing the Venn-diagram strategy taking a two-set circle and applying the writing process – prewriting via generating ideas, selecting relevant ideas, and ordering ideas; drafting general classification and description paragraphs; revising the rough draft and editing it; and publishing a final version. The results showed that the strategy can enhance the learners’ skills and their motivation in writing report text. The learners’ writing scores significantly increased both in two cycles – thirteen learners of the twenty-one students passed from the passing grade level in Cycle 1, and all learners passed from those in Cycle 2. It also highly motivates learners in writing report text, both in two cycles. Therefore, English teachers are recommended to apply Venn-diagram strategy in EFL writing class to start writing.

Abstract

This study was intended to improve the tenth graders’ quality in writing a descriptive text at Madrasah Aliyah through the Directed Writing Activity strategy. Its design was action research consisting of 4 stages, namely planning the action, implementing and observing the action, and reflecting on the action. Its subjects were class X consisting of 31 students. There were 3 instruments used to collect the data needed, i.e. fieldnotes, portfolios, a scoring guide, and questionnaire. The criteria for success of this study were (1) all students participated in the teaching and learning process, (2) all students got score of equal to or more than 3 in each aspect of writing. The findings indicated that in Cycle 1, the study did not meet the criteria of success. Concerning the first criterion, it was only 99% students following the teaching and learning process. One student was absent from the first meeting. In connection with the second criterion, 18 students (58.06%) had achieved a score of equal to or more than 3 and the rest, 13 students (41.94%) got scores below 3. Because the first cycle did not meet the criteria of success, so the researcher carried out the second cycle. All students (100%) participated in the teaching and learning process. In addition to the second criterion, all students got score equal to even greater than 3 in each aspect of writing. From the findings, it can draw the conclusion that the directed writing activity is being able to upgrade the quality in writing descriptive texts of students.

Abstract

This study involved eighth graders’ of MTs Al-Islam Nganjuk and focused on their ability in writing recount text. Based on the result of preliminary study, it was found that the students’ writing ability got unsatisfactory results. Therefore, this classroom action research was conducted. The finding of the study indicated that the implementation of picture series was successful. It showed that the students gained good progress from the first to the second cycle. The data analysis confirmed 71.90%, (in cycle I), 79.50% (in cycle II) students were actively involved. Hence, this study is effective to improve the students’ writing

Abstract

Abstract. This research aims at improving learners’ competencies in writing procedure texts through a process approach. First-year students do not demonstrate sufficient mastery of writing skills. Therefore, to overcome this matter, the investigator used classroom action research. The design of the research was action research which was composed of four phases, specifically planning the action, application, observation of the action, and reflection on the action. The subject of the research was the first-year class consisting of 29 students of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo. Four instruments were employed to gather the data, i.e. observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire, and students’ writing test. The finding of the research indicated that Cycle 1 has not fulfilled the criteria of success. Related to the first criterion, 70% of the learners did at minimum 64.3% of the activities (9 activities out of 14 activities) in the observation checklist, and in Cycle 2 showed 78.5% has fulfilled the criteria of success. Concerning the second criterion 65.5% (19 learners) of the learners, gained a score on a par or more than 60, the research has fulfilled the criteria of success but required rectifying. In Cycle 2, the research finding showed 95% of the learners (28 learners), the research has fulfilled the criteria of success.  Concerning the final criterion, at least 82% of the learners (24 learners) served positive reactions to the application of the process approach as shown by the outcome of the questionnaire, observation checklist, field notes, and students’ writing test.Keywords: writing competencies; procedure texts; process approachAbstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi siswa dalam menulis teks prosedur melalui pendekatan proses. Siswa tahun pertama tidak menunjukkan penguasaan keterampilan menulis yang cukup. Oleh karena itu, untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, peneliti menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu perencanaan tindakan, penerapan, pengamatan tindakan, dan refleksi tindakan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu yang terdiri dari 29 siswa MTs Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo. Empat instrumen digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data, yaitu daftar periksa observasi, catatan lapangan, angket, dan tes menulis siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Siklus 1 belum memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Terkait dengan kriteria pertama, 70% peserta didik melakukan minimal 64,3% tindakan (9 kegiatan dari 14 kegiatan) dalam daftar periksa observasi, dan pada Siklus 2 menunjukkan 78,5% telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Untuk kriteria kedua 65,5% (19 peserta didik) peserta didik, memperoleh nilai setara atau lebih dari 60, penelitian telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan tetapi perlu diperbaiki. Pada Siklus 2, hasil penelitian menunjukkan 95% peserta didik (28 peserta didik), penelitian telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Untuk kriteria akhir, setidaknya 82% peserta didik (24 peserta didik) memberikan reaksi positif terhadap penerapan pendekatan proses seperti yang ditunjukkan oleh hasil angket.Kata kunci: kompetensi menulis; teks prosedur; pendekatan proses

Abstract

Pengucapan bahasa dalam bahasa inggris khususnya memang sangat rentan sekali dalam membuat kesalahan. Terkadang orang tidak mampu atau bahkan malu mempraktekkan bahasa inggris karena takut salah dalam mengucapkan bahasa tersebut. Jadi banyak sekali dikalangan para siswa pendidikan anak dini sampai level mahasiswa bahkan seorang dosen pun kebanyakan merasakan hal yang sama. Oleh karena itu pendampingan pengucapan bahasa Inggris ini harus dilaksanakan secara konsisten dan optimal. Kegiatan Ipteks bagi Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi masalah apa yang membuat para santri enggan mengucapkan dalam bahasa Inggris di pondok modern. Kebanyakan mereka berpendapat bahwa bahasa Inggris sulit pengucapannya. Sebenarnya pengucapan bahasa Inggris itu tidak sulit untuk digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari selama mengetahui cara membacanya dengan menggunakan metode drilling pada setiap item dan simbul suara dalam pembelajarannya. Metode yang akan diterapkan dalam kegiatan Pengabdian masyarakat ini meliputi beberapa tahap, yaitu: identifikasi kesulitan pengucapan dalam bahasa Inggris, media pembelajaran khususnya dalam hal simbul suara, dan seminar tentang pengucapan bahasa Inggris. Pada akhirnya, dari pelaksanaan program pengabdian masyarakat  ini diharapkan para santri pondok modern tidak canggung lagi menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa sehari-hari mereka karena mereka mempunyai pedoman buku standar tentang simbul suara, sehingga mereka dapat dengan mudah mempraktekkan bahasa tersebut dimanapun mereka berada.

Abstract

This present paper addresses the issue of writing as an important aspect of EFL instruction. Writing as one of the four basic language skills plays a pivotal role in the context of English teaching as a foreign language in Indonesia. Considering these problems, it is important to modify the writing process in such a way to cope the writing. The process of writing the writer means is BACK and DRAW activities. What the writer termed as BACK and DRAW is a set of writing activities involving students’ active participation in the process, their intense learning experience in producing a required text, as well as their interactive work with peers and the teacher. BACK and DRAW stands for Brainstorming, Attaching, Correcting, Keeping, Developing, Revising, Arranging, and Wow! Or Wonderful! Or Well done!. These activities are good ways to improve the writing Ability.

Abstract

Abstrak Prioritas permasalahan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat diantaranya adalah teknologi pendukung terapi okupasi gangguan jiwa yang belum memadahi dan bagaimanakah penerapan optiomized occupational therapy pada eks. penderita gangguan jiwa. Tujuan pengabdian masyarakat diantaranuya selain mengoptimalkan mutu layanan yang berfokus pada terapi okupasi dan mengaplikasi teknologi yang mendukung pelaksanaan terapi okupasi juga menilai peningkatan hardskill penderita eks. Gangguan jiwa melalui Optimized Occupational Therapy. Metode pelaksanaan PKM peningkatan hardskill penderita eks. Gangguan jiwa melalui Optimized Occupational Therapy terdiri dari dua kegiatan utama untuk memberikan solusi dari dua masalah, yaitu sebagai berikut: 1) penerapan teknologi pendukung terapi okupasi eks. penderita gangguan jiwa; 2) pelatihan terapi okupasi berdasarkan ipteks. Mitra pada program PKM ini adalah Puskesmas Kesehatan Jiwa Ponorogo , sebanyak 10 penderita gangguan jiwa terlibat aktif kegiatan OOT. Melalui model evaluasi pembelajaran keterampilan melalui lembar observasi check list, pengabdi mendapatkan hasil yang telah dicapai diantaranya peningkatan hardskill sebesar 70% bagi penderita eks. Gangguan jiwa, dan peningkatan kualitas produk sebesar 80%.Abstract: The priority problems of empowerment are include supporting technology for occupational therapy for mental disorders is not yet adequate and how to apply optimized occupational therapy to ex. people with mental disorders. Among other things, the aim of community service is to optimize the quality of services that focus on occupational therapy, but also to apply technology that supports the implementation of occupational therapy. The method of implementing PKM Optimized Occupational Therapy (OOT) for Ex. Patients with mental disorders consist of two main activities to provide solutions to two problems, namely as follows: 1) application of supporting technology for ex occupational therapy. People with mental disorders; 2) occupational therapy training based on science and technology. Partners in this PKM program are Ponorogo mental health centres. The results that have been achieved include an increase in hard skills by 70% for sufferers of ex. Mental disorders, and an increase in product quality by 80%.

Abstract

Nama merupakan identitas sosial sebagai penanda objek salah satunya adalah penamaan paguyuban Reyog Ponorogo. Sebagai kesenian tradisional, kesenian ini masih Mempertahankan pengunaan nama dengan Bahasa Jawa Kuna sebagai salah satu identitas budaya etnik Jawa Panaragan. Pengunaan nama tersebut salah satu yang melatar belakangi adalah kearifan lokal sebagai upaya pemertahanan bahasa Jawa Kuna. Penelitian ini memiliki beberapa tujuan: (1) Mendeskripsikan jenis kearifan lokal apa saja yang melatar belakangi penamaan paguyuban Reyog Ponorogo (2) Mendeskripsikan makna yang terdapat dalam paguyuba Reyog Ponorogo (3) faktor apa saja yang melatar belakangi pemertahanan bahasa Jawa Kuna dalam penamaan Paguyuban Reyog. Data berupa nama-nama paguyuban Reyog yang diperoleh dari Dinas Pariwisata diambil secara purposif sampling dan wawancara serta interprestasi dengan mengunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil temuan dalam penelitian ini yang melatar belakangi faktor eksistensi pengunaan Bahasa Jawa Kuna dalam Paguyiban Reyog karena faktor mempertimbangkan kearifan lokal seperti kearifan lokasi kearifan historis kearifan kualitas kearifan pendidikan, kearifan harapan. Kearifan tersebut tercermin dibalik makna nama paguyuban Reyog dan bertahan dalam pengunaan Bahasa Jawa Kuna karena sikap masyarakat yang memiliki sikap primodialisme dan etnosentris positif sehingga nama pegunaan Bahasa Jawa Kuna masih bertahan dalam pengunaan nama paguyuban Reyog

Abstract

Abstract Reading materials can be obtained from many sources, like storybooks, magazines, and the Internet. Online Short Stories is one of the Internet resources with images and sound and quizzes. This study was aimed at benefiting these readily used materials to improve the eighth graders’ reading comprehension of narrative texts. The Online Short Stories are combined with five worksheets that consist of guiding questions on comprehension, namely: Self Monitoring Card, Key Concept, Story Map, Reading Journal, and Reading Log which are used for intensive and extensive reading activity. This study implemented classroom action research design and had taken 34 eighth graders of MTs Al-Islam Joresan Mlarak Ponorogo as the subjects 2017/2018 academic year. Based on the results of the students’ tests as well as their on-going assessments, it is found out that the students’ reading comprehension was gradually improving. It means that there was a positive effect of using Online Short Stories towards the students’ reading ability. The result shows that the combination of materials and worksheets that were implemented in both cooperative and individual learning had facilitated the students in improving their reading comprehension ability, as well as their social skills. Therefore, it is very important to implement this strategy to order to improve the students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Online Short Stories, Improvement, Reading Comprehension Ability
