Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum provides opportunities for all Indonesian students to explore their talents, one of which is through the National Science Olympiad (OSN). This study aims to analyze student participation and achievement in OSN across regions in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a quantitative approach and cluster random sampling technique. Respondent categories were divided based on student domicile areas: Java and non-Java. The participation and achievement of students in both regions showed that students domiciled in Java Island still dominate participation and achievement in OSN. The study also found that school facilities, costs, and lack of support from teachers and parents are the main obstacles for students outside Java. The impact of OSN is also very beneficial, especially in supporting students' studies and careers, as well as increasing the chances of better educational opportunities in the future. These results provide essential information on equitable improvements in support and access for students and schools in all parts of Indonesia to participate in the OSN.

Abstract

Abstract

Pre-service teachers play an important role in teaching and influencing future learners. One of the important skills that prospective teachers must have is mathematical ability, so information about pre-service teachers' learning tool preferences in understanding mathematical concepts is crucial. This study aims to identify pre-service teachers' learning tool preferences for understanding mathematical concepts. This study used mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 129 prospective teachers from mathematics and science education study programs, as well as elementary school teacher education at Mulawarman University. Quantitative questions used Likert scale-type questions, and qualitative used free-response questions to get an in-depth analysis. The results of this study showed a very weak correlation between learning aid preferences and the understanding of basic math concepts, but it increased considerably when linked to advanced math concepts. In addition, there is a difference in preference between male and female pre-service teachers, where males are more likely to favor tools such as AI or ChatGPT, while females prefer learning videos. This study is expected to provide valuable information for policymakers to provide facilities that support the learning needs of pre-service teachers.

Abstract

This research investigates gender disparities in Indonesia's National Science Olympiad (OSN) Achievements. This research uses mix research, quantitative and qualitative. Data for quantitative analysis we get from secondary data, national achievement center website. Qualitative data we get from questionnaire with free response question, and distributed to students, teachers, and special teachers. For quantitative research we use Mann-Whitney U test whereas qualitative research we use content analysis. This research found that males are dominance to females in almost all subjects of National Science Olympiad Achievements significantly. Social stereotypes about boys using more logic and reasoning while females use more emotion, influence female self-perception and performance in understanding math and science. In terms of biology, it also shows that there are concerns of female participants when participating in OSN, they are in the menstrual period. They felt that when they were menstruating, not only did they feel abdominal pain, they also felt unstable emotions. This reduces the performance of female students when participating in the OSN Competition. The stereotype of females taking care of more household tasks or problems, causing less support from parents to female children than that given to male children. The lack of freedom gained by the female students reduces their study time for OSN preparation

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates first-year science pre-service teachers’ abilities and perspectives on PISA questions, addressing Indonesia's low PISA rankings and challenges in teacher preparation. A total of 153 first-year students from four programs at Mulawarman University (mathematics, biology, physics, and computer education) participated. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected through validated PISA test instruments, while qualitative insights were drawn from open-ended responses. The results showed no significant differences in PISA scores by gender or study program, but significant differences emerged when comparing first-year students to third-year students and professional teachers, with first-year students scoring lower. Qualitative findings revealed themes such as the cognitive challenges posed by PISA questions, their ability to foster critical thinking, unfamiliarity with the format, and their real-world relevance. Despite difficulties, many participants found the questions engaging and valuable for developing analytical skills. These findings highlight the need to incorporate PISA-style assessments in teacher education programs to enhance higher-order thinking and better prepare pre-service teachers for international standards in education.
