Abstract

Anemia in adolescent girls is a health problem that often occurs in Indonesia. Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) is a fruit that is rich in iron and folate, which play an important role in the formation of hemoglobin. This study aims to determine the effect of giving dates on hemoglobin levels in anemic adolescent girls at Prima Nusantara Vocational School, Bukittinggi Indonesia. This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest with the control group design. A total of 30 adolescent girls who experienced anemia were randomly divided into two groups, namely the intervention group which was given 3 dates per day for 4 weeks and the control group which was given no dates. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention. The results showed that there was a significant increase in hemoglobin levels in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Giving dates can increase hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls who suffer from anemia.

Abstract

Anemia is a global health concern, particularly prevalent in developing countries. Traditional remedies like tamarillo and pitaya have been suggested to boost blood production. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these juices in managing anemia. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Participants with mild to moderate anemia (hemoglobin 8-11 g/dL) were randomized to receive daily tamarillo juice, pitaya juice, or a placebo for 12 weeks. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, iron levels, and hematological parameters were assessed at baseline and week 12. A total of 150 participants completed the study (50 per group). Both tamarillo and pitaya juice groups showed significant increases in hemoglobin and hematocrit levels compared to the placebo group (p < 0.05). Pitaya juice also demonstrated a significant increase in iron levels (p < 0.01). No serious adverse events were reported. Tamarillo and pitaya juices show promise as adjunctive therapies for anemia management. Further research is needed to explore their long-term effects and mechanisms of action.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is a priority health problem for adolescents with a prevalence of 17% in Bukittinggi City in 2023, the highest case at the Rasimah Ahmad Health Center at 28.5%. Government programs, namely the provision of iron tablets and the existence of school health units, have not optimally reduced the prevalence of anaemia in adolescents. The iron content of moringa leaves increases haemoglobin. The formation of SHU ARH officers to prevent anaemia and training in processing moringa leaves aims to be an innovation in the School Health Service programme to serve reproductive health problems in overcoming anaemia to prevent the impact of non-compliance with iron tablet consumption. Methods: Collaboration partners are SMPN 03 Bukittinggi City and Rasimah Ahmad Health Center Bukittinggi City from June to September 2024. We collect data through interviews, observations, and documentation. Five methods are used: socialization, preliminary studies and advocacy; formation and training of the SHU ARH Task Force for adolescents; providing education, mentoring and providing processed moringa leaves; and evaluating the sustainability of the SHU ARH. Results: the achievement of the target: 1) The formation of the SHU ARH consisting of 18 people; 2) Of the 87 young women, 79% have high knowledge of anaemia and the benefits of processed moringa leaves, 78% apply processed moringa leaves at home, and cases of anaemia decreased by 20.66%. Conclusion: The sustainability of the programme by providing moringa leaf seeds and planting in schoolyards as a step to provide raw materials for processed moringa leaves.

Abstract

WHO data in 2022 stated that anemia in adolescents aged 13-18 years was 23%, developing countries 53.7% in 2018. Based on the 2023 SKI, anemia in adolescents in Indonesia is quite high, which is 32% at the age of 15-24 years, which has an impact on adolescent health. The iron and vitamin content of dragon fruit affects the process of hemoglobin formation in red blood cells. This study aims to determine the effect of giving dragon fruit pudding on hemoglobin levels in anemic female adolescents. Quantitative research type, Pre-Experimental Design method, One-Group Pretest-Posttest Only Design. The infinite population of all anemic female adolescents in the Koto Lolo Health Center work area, Sungai Penuh City with a purposive sampling technique obtained 16 respondents in 2024. The instrument uses POCT (Easy Touch GCHb Brand) and observation sheets. Data is not normally distributed, using the Wilcoxon test. Univariate analysis obtained the average hemoglobin level before being given dragon fruit pudding was 9,81 + SD 0.832 and after being given dragon fruit pudding was 11,81 + SD 0.758. There was an increase of 2 gr/dl in Hb levels. The results of the bivariate analysis obtained a p value of 0.001 which means (p≤0.05). There is an effect of giving dragon fruit pudding on the hemoglobin levels of anemic adolescent girls in the Koto Lolo Health Center work area in 2024. It is hoped that giving dragon fruit pudding as one of the alternative companion therapy programs to increase Hb levels in anemic adolescent girls

Abstract

The results of the Basic Health Research in 2018 show that the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is 30.8%. This figure is still quite far from the WHO target of 20%. The cause of stunting is known to be due to the lack of intake absorbed by the body, both intake since the womb and after birth, so that it can cause malnutrition. One of the factors that influence malnutrition is the lack of public knowledge of healthy lifestyles and the fulfilment of optimal nutrition. One of the efforts to fulfil good nutrition from an early age is by giving complementary food at the age of 6-24 months appropriately. The purpose of this community service activity is to educate women of reproductive age and mothers of infants about the provision of proper, cheap, and nutritious complementary food based on local food for stunting prevention. The targets in this activity are 45 mothers who have children aged 6 months - 2 years or women of reproductive age in Kalisari Village, Natar District, South Lampung. The methods applied in this counselling activity include: 1) measurement of knowledge about complementary food and how to give it; 2) counselling about complementary food; 3) discussion and question and answer; 4) final evaluation. This service activity was carried out on 15 March 2024. Counselling on complementary feeding and the use of local food ingredients as an appropriate source of complementary food as an effort to prevent stunting needs to be held regularly, so that mothers' knowledge about complementary feeding and the use of local food ingredients can be improved.
