Abstract

This research aims to analyze the relationship between spatial structure, cultural identity, and local values in traditional Batak Toba settlements as the basis for sustainable development based on local wisdom. Using an ethnographic approach through field observations and in-depth interviews, it was found that the spatial layout of the settlement with its configuration of huta, bolon house, sopo, and alaman communal space represents a clan-based social system and Batak Toba traditional cosmology. Space not only functions utilitarianly, but also has symbolic meaning that reflects social relations, spirituality, and collective identity. The use of local materials, the orientation of buildings towards the environment, and the practice of mutual cooperation in house construction indicate that the Batak Toba people have traditionally applied the principles of ecological and social sustainability. The process of modernization and changes in values have the potential to threaten the sustainability of this traditional space, both physically and symbolically. Therefore, the preservation of traditional settlements needs to not only focus on architectural aspects, but also include the revitalization of cultural values as an integral part of an inclusive and contextual sustainable development strategy Keywords:  Toba Batak, ethnography, cultural identity, sustainability, traditional settlements

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to explore and analyze the ethnozoology of the Wampu River within the framework of cultural ecology based on eco-enzyme practices, to identify the challenges of sustainability in river revitalization, and to design an environmentally friendly revitalization model in Bahorok District. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving participant observation, in-depth interviews with 16 informants, questionnaires distributed to 40 respondents, and laboratory tests of water quality at upstream, midstream, and downstream points. The findings reveal that the jurung fish (Tor sp.) holds a central role in Karo culture, functioning not only as a food source but also as a symbolic element of kinship and cultural identity. However, its population is increasingly threatened by pollution, hydropower plant activities, and ecological degradation. The challenges of revitalization include limited ecological literacy among local communities, weak public participation, and the absence of customary institutions that regulate river conservation. As a solution, this research proposes an eco-enzyme-based revitalization model that integrates environmentally friendly technology, local wisdom, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This model is expected to restore water quality while preserving cultural identity, thereby achieving sustainable and environmentally friendly river management.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background:  The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia remains high, with 27.7% reported in the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey. This condition is influenced by low levels of knowledge and awareness, inadequate attitudes toward prevention, and limited family support. Dalihan Na Tolu, a Batak cultural philosophy that emphasises the roles of hula-hula (providing guidance and advice), dongan tubu (ensuring vigilance and mutual supervision), and boru (offering practical and tangible support), has been incorporated into the AToluCare application as a culturally grounded educational and supportive innovation. Objectives: : To analyze the effect of the AToluCare application with a Batak cultural approach in improving knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support for anemia prevention among pregnant women. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design was conducted in Humbang Hasundutan District. Ninety pregnant women were selected through multistage sampling. The intervention involved using the AToluCare application for one month. Valid and reliable questionnaires were used to measure knowledge, attitudes, and Dalihan Na Tolu support. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: Most participants were aged 20–35 years (58.89%), had higher education (75.56%), were employed (70.00%), had parity ≤2 (61.11%), and attended antenatal care regularly (64.44%). Significant improvements were observed in mean scores of knowledge (11.28±2.76 to 16.10±2.40; p-value=0.001), attitudes (39.97±6.86 to 43.22±4.19; p-value=0.008), and Dalihan Na Tolu support (34.12±6.23 to 40.47±5.45; p-value=0.001). Conclusions:The AToluCare application, which incorporates a Batak cultural approach, has been shown to effectively improve knowledge, attitudes, and family support related to anemia prevention among pregnant women. Integrating this application into existing healthcare programs may offer a sustainable, culturally grounded strategy for reducing anemia during pregnancy.
